Survey results of Mexico travelers

On March 9, 2009, Funjet Vacations conducted a survey to learn firsthand what vacations are experiencing in the areas around resorts in Mexico. The survey was sent to Funjet Vacations’ travelers who visited Mexico between October 2008 and March 2009. A total of 799 people responded: 284 who traveled to Mexico in 2008 and 515 who traveled to Mexico in 2009.

Here are the survey results…

Travelers see no reason to stop visiting Mexico, and are eager to visit again.

Q: Would you return to Mexico again for a vacation?
A: 97% said “Yes”

Recent travelers see no reason to stop visiting Mexico

Those who traveled in early 2009 responded that they felt more safe compared to those who traveled in late 2008.

Q: While you were vacationing in Mexico, did you feel unsafe at any time?
A: 2008: 85% said “No” | 2009: 91% said “No”

Q: Agreement with statement “I felt safe and secure” while traveling in Mexico:
A: 2008: 89% agreement | 2009: 92% agreement.

Tourist Areas in Mexico Remain Safe

The Mexico Travel Warning does not discourage U.S. citizens from traveling to Mexico tourist destinations.

The U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Warning on Sunday, March 14, 2010. The Mexico Travel Warning does not discourage U.S. citizens from traveling to Mexico tourist/beach destinations such as Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Los Cabos, Vallarta, Mazatlan, Ixtapa or Acapulco, and asks travelers to take common sense precautions to ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.

What does the Mexico Travel Warning actually say?

The Mexico Travel Warning dates back to 2008 and was last updated on March 14, 2010. It acknowledges that millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year and common sense precautions can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable. The warning urges U.S. citizens to delay unnecessary travel to parts of Duragno, Coahuila and Chihuahua states. U.S. citizens should also exercise caution if visiting the following cities/areas because of recent drug-related incidences: Michoacán, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Durango, Coahuila, Reynosa, Monterrey, Gomez Palacio, area of La Laguna, Sinaloa, northern Baja California, and the Guadalupe Bravo area. The warning also authorizes the departure of the dependents of U.S. government personnel from U.S. consulates in Northern Mexico border cities of Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey and Matamoros.

Where are the cities/regions affected by the drug-related violence?

Recent drug-related incidences are predominantly in Mexico/U.S. border towns, more than 300 miles from the main tourist destinations like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Acapulco. For example, the distance from Ciudad Juarez to Cancun and the Riviera Maya is more than 2,200 miles. That’s just a few hundred miles less than the difference between San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY.
