An island off Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Cozumel is both a world away and close to the action.

Cozumel, Mexico

Visit Cozumel for a true Caribbean escape.

Known mostly as a popular stop for cruise ships, Cozumel is a densely forested island off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Seriously, this place is covered in trees. We’re talking trees on trees on trees. Because of this, it has also become a super popular destination for travelers looking for a much quieter, slower-paced Caribbean experience than you might find in nearby Cancun. But that doesn’t mean you’re not close to the action. Just a 30-minute boat ride away is Playa Del Carmen, an iconic shopping district on the mainland with something for everyone. The island of Cozumel itself tends to calm down in the evening when the cruise ships take off, providing some more down to earth nightlife.

Diving & snorkeling

Located along the second largest coral reef in the world, Cozumel offers some of the most mind-blowing deep-sea diving and snorkeling experiences in all of Mexico. Professional dive groups flock to Cozumel, but families and kids will love a chance to swim with dolphins, manatees, and sea lions at Chankanaab Park.

Take advantage of the complimentary introductory scuba diving lessons many resorts offer as part of their all-inclusive package.

Quiet, yet active

Considered one of the more laid-back destinations in Mexico, Cozumel actually boasts one of the more active communities in the region. With miles of lush hiking and running trails throughout the island, it’s no surprise Cozumel is a favorite locale for many Olympians and those training for IRONMAN competitions. But if you’re looking to be active without breaking too much of a sweat, you can always hit the links at Cozumel Country Club.

Cozumel is one of the best places for scuba divers to explore the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Many resorts offer free introductory scuba lessons, so what’s your excuse?

Shopping & restaurants

If you're looking to pick up some unique mementos to remember your trip by, or are looking to indulge your taste buds in a flurry of international flavors, Cozumel is the destination for you. A more authentic market located downtown offers tons of Caribbean souvenirs, and there are plenty of unique restaurants to dine at after a long day of shopping.

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club is home to what many consider the best burger in all of Mexico.

Mayan ruins

Because Cozumel was home to a large Mayan population, it became a common stop along a trade route specializing in hot chocolate. So if you’d rather learn about the history of the island than lounge on its white sand beaches, there’s no shortage of opportunities for you to do so, with easily accessible Mayan ruins peppered throughout the island.

Tour the island by ATV, jeep or horseback, all of which can be booked as part of your vacation package with Funjet.

Getting around Cozumel

The local taxi union makes it easy to find a ride at a low flat rate. $10 USD will get you anywhere on the island. But if you’re looking to make your own way around, you can rent jeeps, motorbikes, and even kayaks if paddling the long way around the coast is your preferred pace.

If you are looking to get to the mainland, you’ll have to take the plane or a ferry.
