Puerto Rico

What’s the best reason to visit Puerto Rico: the traditional food, the rich culture, the unique nature or the local history? You’ll have to go to find out, because we can’t decide.

Puerto Rico

Local flare meets domestic convenience.

Puerto Rico is a time capsule. It’s a mix of the past and present — and only the best of both. It has the upbeat, casual Latino flare you might expect, with the excellent levels of service and ease of travel that you might not. Plus direct flight options mean zero stops between you and the beach.

Historical Sites of Old San Juan

If it weren’t for the perfect temperatures and palm trees (and the lack of passport requirements) you might think you’re vacationing in Europe. Old San Juan is lined with cobblestone streets and quaint colonial buildings in bright, cheerful colors. It’s listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places — and you’ll understand why when you check out Castillo San Felipe del Morro and other historical forts and structures.

Travel Tip

Take a guided tour of Old San Juan and you’ll get to enjoy the area’s stories as well as the sights.

Pick Your Paradise

The varied areas of Puerto Rico add to its character and increase your vacation options. If you live a vibrant life (or wish you did) then you’ll love the hustle and bustle of new San Juan. You don’t have to go far to find entertainment, because almost every hotel offers golfing and a casino. Aching for relaxation with a side of exploration? Rio Grande has you covered. Spend your days golfing, beaching and sipping cocktails, and take an adventure to the rainforest when you want a change of scenery. Speaking of scenery, how about a hotel built into the side of a mountain? (Yes, seriously.) You’ll want to stay in Farjado for that unique experience.

Travel Tip

If the beach is the key to your happiness, the ones in Vieques are tough to beat.

Bioluminescent Bays

There are only six bioluminescent bays in the world, and three of them are in Puerto Rico. You have to see these things to believe them (and we highly recommend seeing them.) Basically, there are tiny microorganisms in the water that thrive in the area’s unique conditions, and when they are disturbed (which guides will do ever so carefully) they give off a spectacular blue-green glow. Sign up for a nighttime tour and you’ll kayak in the dark through a mangrove to the magical, natural attraction. You’ll want to plan in advance by looking at a moon calendar — the moonlight tends to be too bright for proper viewing for the first six days prior to a full moon.

Travel Tip

You’ll want to rent a car for personal explorations, because there is little public transportation outside of Old San Juan.
