South Florida

Whether you’re in search of sun and sand or tropical wetlands, you’ll find paradise in the diverse regions of South Florida.

South Florida Landscape

There’s more to love in South Florida.

The lower your latitude, the more diverse your Florida vacation options. Southern Florida is dotted with laid-back beach towns and lively city centers. Outdoor enthusiasts will be extra enthused when they find out about the impressive list of opportunities to get their fill of sun, sand and tropics. With plenty of southern Florida flight options from all over the country, getting there is easy. The hard part is narrowing down your destination.

Think of Miami as a luxury play land. This city will keep any busy bee content with vibrant nightlife and outdoor excursions. When you’re ready to slow down and soak up the sights, take in the city on two wheels with a Segway tour (they’re easier to maneuver than you might think) or hop on a Biscayne Bay sightseeing cruise and kick back while you listen to the history of the area in the ocean breeze.

Miami is known as a place for movers and shakers, but there are plenty of places to get a break from the bustle of the city. Everglades National Park is just a short drive away. It’s worth the trip to witness the wetlands’ unique ecosystem and wildlife. Or catch a boat to Key Biscayne for hiking, biking, and a visit to the family-friendly Seaquarius. Before you head back to the mainland, check out the beautiful views of the Miami skyline from Cape Florida Lighthouse. You won’t regret it.

Once you’re recharged, you might want to embrace the bohemian vibe of Coconut Grove and sample its arts districts and open-air cafes. Just be sure you have enough energy left to indulge in dinner, drinks and dancing at night.

Fort Lauderdale

If you catch yourself daydreaming of waves rolling into a soft, sandy shore, then you have to see Fort Lauderdale. It’s the ideal destination for seaside relaxation. Like a little bit of Italy with your beachy dreams? You’re in luck. Known as the “Venice of America,” this charming city is built on manmade canals, giving visitors the chance to sightsee from the seat of a kayak.

Once you’re feeling cultured and well rested, it’s time to dive in. Literally. The Atlantic coast has phenomenal dive sites with sunken ships to explore. Prefer to stay dry? Head to Las Olas Boulevard for unique boutique shopping or catch a show in the open-air amphitheater near Hollywood Beach.

If you’re bringing the whole family, (we highly recommend it), a visit Deerfield Beach area for hiking, biking, and water sports should be on your itinerary. Looking for a history lesson? The Bonnet House will be right up your alley. It features a museum and lush gardens, plus it’s just a short distance from Fort Lauderdale beach, which is your go-to spot for nightlife in the area.

Travel Tips

Fort Lauderdale is an ideal spot for extending your vacation before or after a cruise.

Fort Lauderdale has a large LGBT community and regularly hosts events for people of all interests and backgrounds.

Fort Myers

Ready to relax? Fort Myers is waiting. It’s a great destination for flipping through a book and soaking up some rays. Environment enthusiasts and animal lovers will find paradise in this place. It’s just a short distance from Sanibel Island, which has unbeatable sea shelling, plus fishing and kayaking opportunities. It’s also home to J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is well known for its ecotourism and bird watching. You’ll want your camera for this one.

If you’re visiting during the winter or you’d like a taste of history, you have to visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. This former residence of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford is home to a historical museum and a 21-acre botanical garden. It’s also known for being fabulously decorated for the winter holidays - no winter parka required.

For an “old Florida feel,” you’ll want to make a trip to Captiva Island or Sanibel. Both areas are packed with locally owned businesses and have plenty of regional flare. Sanibel is also home to the original Chico’s store – a fun stop for those looking to shop.

Travel Tips

Visit during spring to catch the Red Sox or the Twins in spring training.

Skip the crowds and visit during late spring or early fall.

Naples is the quintessential couples’ retreat. The laid-back atmosphere, fine dining, art galleries, and luxurious nightlife offer plenty of opportunities to reconnect.

Start your visit by getting a feel for the area with the hop-on-hop-off trolley tour, where you’ll get an engaging historical overview of the area. (Don’t worry, there won’t be any tests.) We recommend hopping off the tour to grab a bite at one of the local eateries. You’ll quickly find that Naples is a foodie's paradise with restaurants for every taste, from every culture.

It is Florida after all, so of course there are plenty of ways to enjoy the weather. Our favorites are golfing and beaching on Marco Island and deep sea fishing and waterfront shopping in Tin City.
