U.S. Virgin Islands

Rustic and laid back? Yep. Lively and family-friendly? You bet. There’s a piece of paradise with your name on it in the U.S. Virgin Islands. (And we’ll help you find it.)

U.S. Virgin Islands

Getting to your island oasis is easy-breezy.

Traveling to paradise is always worth the preparation. But it’s even sweeter when getting there doesn’t require a passport, currency exchange or layover. Yep, round up the family, because it’s just as easy to arrive in the luxury of the U.S. Virgin Islands as it is to venture anywhere in the U.S.

Bring the whole crew to St. Thomas.

St. Thomas is home to the area’s international airport and lots of direct flight options. And who really appreciates direct flights? Well, everyone, but especially: Families. Coincidentally, families are also big fans of St. Thomas. The island is lively, with a long list of ways to wear everyone out. Blackbeard’s Castle is a good place to start. In one tour you can see the real pirate tower and National Historic Site and also check out the Grand Historic Homes of St. Thomas. (Who says vacations can’t be educational?)

Pack bright colored clothing if you want to visit the local Butterfly Garden, and you’ll have better luck attracting the winged beauties. To see more brightly-colored creatures, schedule a snorkeling or scuba diving excursion.

The wildlife is wonderful, but the natural sights aren’t too shabby, either. Stop by the Port of St. Thomas for some breathtaking photo opportunities or take the Skyride to Paradise Point - you’ll ride a gondola up the mountain where you’ll find a restaurant, shopping, and unbeatable views.

Travel Tip

Ride the Skyride to Paradise Point in the evening for a unique view of the homes and buildings lit up below.

Explore St. Croix at your leisure.

Just a 20 minute plane ride from St. Thomas, this less populated island is a perfect oasis for total relaxation. Its rustic vibe will give you a real feel for the Caribbean, where your only cares are remembering to reapply sunscreen. Want to mix a little excitement with your leisure? Hike through lush vegetation to the Annaly Bay tide pools or trek to the Carambola tide pools (or go wild and check out both) and you’ll be rewarded with a nice, refreshing dip and rich views.

Travel Tip

The terrain is diverse and exciting, so bring your sneakers if you’re planning to go hiking.

Unplug in St. John.

St. John is all about rest and relaxation. To get there, you’ll fly in to St. Thomas and then enjoy the sea breeze aboard a ferry to your destination. If you’re a beach snob, prepare to be pleased. St. John is known for its perfect white sand and turquoise waters. In our opinion, it’s home to the best beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands — and maybe the world.

More than half of St. John island belongs to the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park, which has more immaculate beaches, top-notch scuba diving and snorkeling, and rainforest hiking trails. Interested in staying within the boundaries of the park? The most notable option is Caneel Bay Resort on the north shore. It’s one of few resorts left where you can truly unplug. That’s right — no televisions or TVs means distraction-free memories.

Travel Tip

It’s common to spot wildlife and ancient Taíno petroglyph rock carvings along the National Park’s hiking trails.
