    Excellent time with family!

We just returned from a one week stay at the Royalton Riviera Cancun. Do not let the bad reviews scare you. We booked 2 presidential 1 bedroom suites (one for my husband and 2 babies, 19 months old and 3 months old and the other for my parents and sister). We requested adjoining rooms by emailing the resort ahead of time but ended up in separate buildings. Buildings 7, 8 and 9 are closest to the kids pool area. We were in Building 3 on the Diamond side, which is furthest away from the kids pool but there is a toddler friendly pool on the Diamond side, it was waist deep on our 19 month old. Plus the drinks were much better on the Diamond side. The kids pool is huge and so fun, it was the perfect depth for our 19 month old to run around. The beach is beautiful with soft white sand. The umbrellas are limited so bring hats and sunscreen. We talked to guest services and reserved a cabana for two days. It was perfect for providing shade and some privacy for our 3 month old. The towels on the sun beds at 7am is a thing, we ended up just moving towels off the chairs when hours went by and no one showed up. Service was excellent everywhere. We tipped well because everyone was so friendly, smiling and giving high-fives to the kids. We ate at the Mexican, TexMex, Italian and Steakhouse, all were fine. The Steakhouse and Mexican are also open for breakfast (the Mexican was the best as you can order from a menu). The buffet has something for everyone. The reservation system on the app is tricky but our dinners were so early (5:30-6:00pm because of the kids) it was easier to book out of the peak times. We ordered room service, robes, two cribs, an extra bed (for my sister, the pullouts are pretty old and in rough shape). Everything was delivered timely. Even our housekeeper changed her schedule so that she started to come earlier when she knew we brought the kids back to the room in the afternoon for their nap. We've traveled extensively and know that your trip is what you make of it. Focus on the negatives and you'll have a negative experience. We were too busy jumping in the ocean waves and going down the kiddie slides and having mimosas delivered to us by the pool to pay much attention to chipped paint. No place is perfect but go in with an open mind and enjoy your vacation!

    Great variety

Food was tasty, staff was wonderful and hard working. Our room over looked the pool( loud at night) but you could see part of the shows from the balcony. Lots of live music. Great aqua fit. Resort is big but lots of variety. Spa is expensive but beautiful, the hydrotherapy was the best ever. Did the catamaran (9hrs) snorkelling and trip to Isle Mujeres (beautiful beaches). Had to pay extra for sunscreen (only allowed certain ones $$$ and golf cart if you wanted to go around the island $. Albatross was the company booked it with Sunwing. Our kids did the the trip for horseback, Atv, zip lining and grato and loved it. One pool faces the ocean And entertainment pool both very big. Other pools around resort. Staff really appreciated the tips and speaking some Spanish. Was apprehensive with prior negative reviews but we all really enjoyed ourselves and have nothing but good things to say about this place

    Very Disappointing

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with the service I received during my recent stay at your resort from January 27,2025to February 4,2025 This was my third visit to your property, and unfortunately, it was a drastically different experience from my previous two, which were very positive. This decline in service, particularly given my Prime membership status, was unacceptable. Upon arrival, despite having notified the resort of our expected arrival time via email, there was no bellhop available. I was directed to the regular reception area, where I was forced to wait for over an hour to check in. This was particularly frustrating as a Prime member, and even more so because I was traveling with three other couples who I had recommended your resort to. We then had to transport our own luggage to our rooms. During my stay, the butler service, while well-intentioned, was disorganized and inconsistent. Furthermore, a previously enjoyed amenity, the complimentary tennis aerobic class, is no longer offered. The most egregious issue occurred at checkout. Despite having coordinated a late departure with our butlers, including arrangements for hospitality suites to shower before our 8:00 PM departure, the manager in the Diamond Lounge confronted our group. He claimed we had been unreachable all day, which is untrue, as we were in constant contact with our butlers via WhatsApp. He then aggressively attempted to charge each couple $500 for an extra day, a charge that was completely unjustified given our pre-arranged late departure. This interaction was not only unprofessional but also incredibly embarrassing, as it occurred in front of my friends. As a loyal Prime member who brought significant business to your resort, I expect a much higher standard of service. The lack of recognition of my membership, the long check-in wait, the inconsistent butler service, the removal of perks, and, most importantly, the miscommunication and aggressive behavior at checkout, significantly detracted from our vacation and caused me considerable embarrassment. I request a formal apology from the resort management for the unacceptable treatment we received.

**Please read before you book Jan 2025**

I had a terrible start to my holiday when only 1hour after checking in, money had disappeared from my room. After a long 20 hour trip from UK to Cancun, I dumped my bags and went to quickly grab a bite to eat, 45minutes later, I came back to my room and I'd noticed my money had been removed from my bag. After filing a report with the manager and security team, I never heard back from them, despite them telling me it will take 24/72 hours to get back to me on their findings. (I was there for 2 weeks!) Even after this incident occurred, I requested that no one is enter my room and despite having 'do not disturb', staff continued to enter my room daily. (by this point all valuables were locked in the safe). I spent the last two days of my holiday constantly asking them for the report (so I could log it with my insurers) and being told this person and that person is in a meeting and I should come back, I have since left the resort and am still waiting to be emailed the report. Always trust your gut feeling when you feel like you're being fobbed off/lied to and stand your ground. The checking in process is TEDIOUS, despite having pre-checked in, it still took 30 minutes to check in, the queues are horrendous and it all felt a bit chaotic. I was checking in as a single person, so I hate to think how long it took larger groups/families! No verbal information was given to you at check in, no mention of the app you needed to download to be able to book restaurants and order room service (FYI download the app!) I booked a ''Luxury Junior Suite with Balcony and Whirlpool Bath'', I assumed I would be based in the adult only section of the hotel, however, this comes at an extra charge (I was told it was $30 extra per night) which I wasn't aware of until arriving. I wasn't too bothered being located in the family section of the resort, but you may end up having a kid pool facing balcony. I had a balcony facing the mangroves, which had noise 24/7 with what sounded like a generator constantly on - so in hindsight pool facing may have been better for during the night. Double check with them before you go. Also whirlpool bath was broken - Room 8214 (avoid if you want to have a whirlpool experience LOL). The entire resort is understaffed for the amount of people that are there. It really doesn't feel luxury at all - queuing and waiting 10 minutes for mediocre tasting drinks which barely taste of any alcohol, broken sunbeds, over crowded pools/bar areas and basic food. The main buffet food is nice, HOWEVER, the food choice barely changes and there are hardly any signs to tell you what it actually is (apart from the obvious meats/salads etc) so if, like me, you're there for two weeks, you tend to stick to your 'go to' food options. At the buffet you could queue and have things like steak, burgers, pasta etc made to order. If you're not a 'Diamond' member, be careful where you sit in the buffet as for some reason they have unmarked areas of the restaurant for the ''elite diamonders'' - which is baffling because it's all the same seating / maybe they don't like to sit next to us regular low budget folk, which I find funny because it's an all inclusive, get a grip, LOL. The onsite restaurants are abysmal! The only two worth booking and eating at is the Zen Teppanyaki and the Hunter steak restaurant - the other restaurants I wouldn't even bother wasting your time and taking the risk on your health with! Nothing felt authentic, ESPECIALLY the Mexican restaurant, which i found surprising because y'know being in Mexico and all that! All the themed restaurants were low grade cooking and low budget tasting ingredients (apart from the two I mentioned above), stick to the buffet and the mysterious unnamed dishes! the room service menu is hit and miss too and basic in terms of options - I only ordered room service twice and the wait times varied, one arrived on time and cold and the other over 1.5 hours but arrived hot. You can't customize your options or add beverages to it either. FYI They also wouldn't let you take food from the buffet if you wanted to grab something different from there and go back to your room with it. (didn't give a reason as to why... but were adamant you weren't allowed, even though I'd seen people with Tupperware containers previously... Maybe they were diamonders and one rule for them, not sure?! Some staff are incredibly rude and selective to who they help/serve - this I imagine is down to them picking and choosing the ones who are waving dollars in front of them. Sometimes it felt like you were getting on their nerves when ordering a drink at the bars. I must say not all staff were like this, just the select few. (Just a shame that those select few were always at the main bar area's) Sunbeds, now, I am a morning person - BUT, oh my god! If you're not getting up at 5am to go put a towel on your sunbed, you'll be hard to find one after 5.01am! that's an exaggeration, but seriously, even from 7am/8am - people had already claimed 90% of the sunbeds available, which is a shame really because you could never enjoy different parts of the resort unless you got up before sunrise to claim a bed - and I don't know how people did it, because towels weren't given out until around 8.30am-ish so I assume people kept the towels from the day before which I find super selfish! I can't say it was all bad though... The rooms are modern and are very pleasant, cleaned to a great standard and mini bar requests were always asked if needed stocked up. Beds were super comfy too! Aircon was amazing too. Guest services we super attentive too, constantly called me to see if I had reservations, or needed anything (I'm not sure if this was just because of my individual situation with my security issue at the beginning of the holiday). The nightly entertainment was good, however, was let down by the seating available and bar/table service available. You'd find people claiming seats there too like they did with the sunbeds. The daily entertainment was alright, a bit flat energy sometimes. 10 out of 10 for the 'vibe' teams effort though! sometimes you just got to read the 'vibe' and let people relax. The beach was nice, clean and relaxing (at times). The volley ball net/marking is situated next to an entire section of sunbeds and as I've said, sunbeds are sought after at this resort, so if you're not quick to find a relaxing spot you may end up next to the volley ball bit... which is fine, but danger of a ball being hurled your way! Safety - I found the resort overall was safe to walk around at night/during the day etc. There were some health and safety issues I'd noticed though; at the Sportsbar elevator - it is out of service at the bottom of the stairs, however, the door to the elevator at the top is open, and there is a HUGE RISK of a child or an elderly person not realising and walking through the open elevator and falling and seriously hurting themselves. The wooden pathway/boards leading to the beach are all warped and is a serious trip hazard, someone I was with, tripped and seriously injured their foot, causing serious harm and medical attention was needed there and at home. Overall, it was OK for an all inclusive, however, it wasn't ground breaking for the money spent, it didn't scream Mexico and nothing really felt 10/10. Better off spending half that money, half the travel time and going somewhere closer to home. Also a mention to TUI (travel operators), flight service going out was shocking, your staff were unprofessional and rude, the inflight food & beverage was also a joke! (24/01/25 - 9am) (The dolphin excursion operated by a 3rd party was excellent, that was the best part of the entire holiday. Boat ride with unlimited food and drink, 1 hour spent with the dolphins doing tricks and petting them, boat ride to another place followed by zip wire, snorkeling, food and drinks and finally boat ride back with more drinks and food and party atmosphere - was such a good vibe! (hopefully you can book directly, the company was called 'Dolphin Discovery')

    Where to begin?

Lets start from the beginning....we were a group of 21 (mix of couples & families) there to celebrate a friend's big birthday. Between us all we paid nearly £45k for a 2 week break here. Advised to check in to the hotel online as very busy & can take long time to check in otherwise. Tried this several times & didn't work, so checked in on site. After 15 hrs of travelling not the greatest experience having to wait so long. No information about the hotel / restaurants etc - here's your wrist band, give us your deposit money & be on your way.... I will say the gentlemen taking care of luggage were nice/helpful. Got to our room (stayed in Mexico before, so fully aware most rooms can smell damp) but the room stank like a dirty mop had been used to clean it. Didn't thrill me to unpack my clothes. It really did smell bad! The room itself was lovely - we had a swim up room in block 9 close to the beach. Went to the buffet to grab some food - lovely buffet, great food. Wish we'd eaten in there every night to be honest as the other restaurants left a lot to be desired - would not recommend! The main issue everywhere, was service! Waiting up to 35 mins for a drink in some instances. We walked in to be seated at the buffet 1 night & they checked our wrist bands & told "arrr, just regulars - follow me" talk about make you feel special! I will say the steak restaurant was lovely - we ate there a couple of times. Service at ALL bars, EVERYWHERE extremely slow & this is because there is no where near enough staff for the number of guests. They would run out of ice a lot too. Would also change the times nearly every day as to what time beach bar closed. 1 day it closed super early due to a wedding taking place. Building works going on - various mornings my friends were woken at 5am. 1 day I couldn't get to the beach toilet, was all shut off and as a result had to go elsewhere & ended up cutting off the top of my toe on uneven beach slats. Still dealing with this injury a week later & ruined the last week of my holiday - although will say medical care was good from Dr Jesus..... $455 I didn't want to be spending on sorting though! Shop prices on site are astronomical so do not run out of anything! I ran out of sun cream. Cost me $70!! for 2 bottles and burnt soon as i applied it, so that went in the bin. Thankfully Tui were really helpful & brought me some that worked at a fraction on the price. You have to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve a sun bed otherwise you will not get one. Definitely not enough for the number of guests The sports bar has balcony attached to it where you can reserve seats & have shisha. You can also stand there to enjoy your drinks/watch the entertainment - well, some nights anyway. Some nights it was shut off only for those paying for the reserved seats! Think it depended on who was in charge that particular night. We only went up there as it's so hard to get a drink at the martini bar downstairs. There is a glass door leading to a lift (that isn't there) so how someone wasn't seriously injured I'll never know. We reported it but fell on deaf ears - nothing was done about it & probably never will be. This sounds like a really moany review, I know, and to be fair we had a really nice holiday aside from these things - due to the company we were with more than anything & that we were so grateful to be in the sunshine in January. Would I stay there again? NO Would I recommend the hotel? NO There are lots of improvements to be made, mainly surrounding service! & sorting bits that are very tired looking/broken - in particular the flooring leading to the beach, especially if you value your toes!
