Another relaxing vacation at Bahia Principe !

This was the 13-th time at Coba... We saw the evolution of this resort from 2011 to 2024 ( with the 2020 gap, of course). The first couple of years we were blown away ! It was a 5 star resort, no doubt. Gradually the level of service had slightly decreased, the beach has shrunked, the rooms got a bit dated. We really don't mind the older furniture . We only need a quiet and functioning AC. We are low maintenance people. Clean rooms and AC is all we need. This year our experience was excelent ! The staff was , as usual, top notch, starting with the people at Check-in desk and ending with the room maids and maintenance workers. We cannot be grateful enough for the hard work they perform every day ! The lobby is by far the best out of all four resorts GBP. We did stay at Sian Ka'an and Akumal other time but we would prefer to spend our evenings at the Coba lobby. Our personal preference.... The beach is a mixed bag. Coba beach is crowded and it's size seem to vary with the storms ( they bring sand in to enlarge the beach and the waves wash it away...) We are black members and we could sit at Akumal beach, adjiacent to Coba one, which wasn't crowded. The great thing about Bahia Principe beach is the proximity of the reef which makes snorkeling appealing. We saw sting rays, eels, squid, even barracuda. Plus a lot of exotic fish. Tip for early risers: before 9 AM it's best time for snorkelers - no crowd, water clearer and no lifegurds to call you back if you go past the buoys line, deeper into the reef. But be mindful if you go into the reef - it's a fragile environment so treat it with respect ( don't put your feet down unless you really have to ! ) Food was very good, as usual. Of course , there are "caviar" people that are not going to be happy. But, in general, there was something for everybody. We admit, there were moments when the trays at the buffet were empty and people were walking around with empty plates. Solution - come back few minutes later. . No impression to share about pools - we are not pool people. We will definitely come back ! Thank you Bahia Principe Resorts ! Thank you Mexico !

KIDS NOT SAFE in this hotel

This review is about my concerns about food quality and safety in the hotel. Food - 3 members of our family got poisoned in Bahia Principe Grand Coba buffets/restaurants. Fortunately, it took them just 2 days to recover. All reported with the guest service members. Safety - our kids got robbed at one of night shows (Silent Disco Night) 11/28/2024, the "criminal couple" even had chased us after being revealed to the front desk. The security was called but never showed up. All reported to the manager with no response after 20 hours of the incident happened. Simply do not feel safe for myself and my family due to their protocol which (manager said) says it takes 72 hours to inspect the camera footage (thank you so much, we'll be gone by then). My kids had to deal with "bad guys" again at the buffet a bit ago. The hotel did not protect us from seeing them again and again. This might turn to a police matter then.. Orherwise, things in this hitel worl well, however as the safety for my famiky first, I'd never visit this place again as they cannot protect their guests efficiently. Neither from criminals nor from bad food bacteria..

Awful and will not be returning

This is our third time at this hotel and sadly we will never be returning. The quality of professionalism from staff across the resort has gone down hill drastically. The cleanliness as well as maintenance up keep of the hotel is awful!!!! We had to change rooms three times within the first 4 days of our holiday due to water leaks in the bathroom. No compensation offered just for maintenance to come and fix the issue. This is meant to be a five star resort and honestly its more like a 2 star if that. I slipped over outside the lobby due to a spilt drink with lemon wedges on the floor, there was staff right by this who had failed to report or clean this up. As a result, i smashed my knee and couldn't walk for days of our holiday. Again no compensation offered, just some ice provided in a plastic glove!! The food quality is terrible, my partner was ill from the second day for days due to the quality of the food. The people staying at the resort treat a five star resort like a party island, no respect or care for others. The pool was constantly closed due to vomit and toilet business. Large groups of people attend and can be very aggressive and loud with no care or consideration for others around. I fear this location is now a party location and no longer a 5 star resort which a terrible shame. The a la carte restaurants are always completely booked when you arrive and are until January so they claim, however with persistence going to guest services time and time again, magically they find space!! The only restaurants i recommend is the Brazilian and the Indian cuisine. We was served by Marcos in the Indian cuisine restaurant and his service was the best we have ever recieved and the food was amazing!!! But bare in mind, extremely hard to get booked so keep trying!! Our Tui Rep, Rachel, saved our holiday completely! Without her, i most likely would of changed resorts or gone home. Her professionalism, empathy, kindness and persona was unmatched. I have never felt so cared for by a stranger ever, she deserves all the praise in the world. She genuinely loves her job and caring for people. We will be forever grateful for her help across our holiday!

We used to love Coba, but now we will not come back

We have been to Mexico about 10 times and we will come back again no doubt as we love the people, the Country, the atmosphere, the whole package. We spent many of our stays at Grand Bahia Principe Coba which never disappointed us until now, and these are the reasons we will not come back unless things change. The Good: Coba has a very relaxed and chilled way of life, less of a party place which you will find more in the sister Tulum and Akumal. We have no children and we are in our early 50s, we have quite demanding jobs in London and we enjoy the quieter atmosphere. All the staff is so friendly, kind and always helpful and they really treat you as each of you is the most important guest. The lobby is in our opininion the best one of all the resort hotels: bright, airy, spacious, leading onto the the main square where night entertainment takes place. The gardens are beautifully kept and lush and the whole place is spotless clean. Some people said the rooms are "tired", but to us is frankly charming, more in keeping with the surroundings: they are big, clean and everything works...however, we have been told the whole of the hotel will be updated soon, as they did for Tulum and Akumal. Word of advice: if you have no mobility issues, ask for the top floor rooms as the ones at the ground floor smell of damp a bit and have to use a dehumidifier. If you have a restaurant booking and do not turn up or are really late, you get charge $20 unless you have cancelled your booking in advance (which you can do pretty last minute)...we think it is only fair to request that and it is only good manners to inform the restaurant. The Bad: We were last here end of 2019, and this is our first holiday since the pandemic and we were disappointed with all the changes that took place since our last visit. 1) The Beach: back then you would have access to pretty anywhere by the beach (sunbeds, bars and buffets - apart from the Akumal section) as they are all part of the same resort complex. Now if you are staying at Coba's, you only have access to a small, overcrowded section with a small bar: you can not use any of the facilities of the sister's hotel Tulum as you could before and if you want to eat you need to go back all the way to Coba's (which is quite a fair trolley journey)...the irony is that Tulum has a very long beach with plenty of empty beds. You can get access to all the facilities you could use back in 2019 as long as you pay and extra $10pp a day, which is frankly a rip off, given the resort prives have also increased. 2) Restaurants Booking: restaurants are really good, but we were unaware you can now do a pre-checkin via the hotel app and pre-book your place at the restaurant up to 10 days before your arrival...this means that by the time you get to the resort all the best time slots are taken or none are available at all. This is really unfair to people who are not aware of the option and/or that are not digitally savvy: you can queue up at the guest service once on site, but by then the availability is all gone and you get turned around. Back in 2019 you could only book restayrants once you had checked in at the resort (not before then) and you could you do it up to 3 days in advance, which made it fair for all. 3) Reastaurants Air Conditioning: always kept at maximum, making each place freezing cold and impacting the dining experience 4) the Magic Cotton Candy Floss machine in the lobby is very annoying and an eye sore with its neon lights: plays the same 30 seconds tune on repeat day and night and it is really ugly to see in what is such a beautiful lobby. Surely it can be moved somewhere else. The Ugly: 1) Smoking: Mexico's non-smoking law, which took effect on January 15, 2023, prohibits smoking in most public places, including: beaches, parks, hotels, sports stadiums, shopping centers, public transport, restaurants, event spaces, squares, and stores. The hotel totally ignores it and allows people to smoke wherever they want, even under signs where it is says "100% no smoking" and nothing us enforced. This is a real joke and very disapponting, which is one of the main reasons why the resort has now lost our custom. We are non-smokers and had close family members who died from smoke related diseases and were very excited by the ban, which is why we chose Mexico without hesitation. Shame on the management that for the enjoyment of the few smokers is prepared to overturn the law. We used to love Coba, but this has been a real deal breaker for us.

    Highway in our room!

We don’t regret booking this trip, although we were concerned with the reviews. Pro’s : great buffet and shout out to Maricio and Carlos who spoilt us with great service. Received extra care for my birthday with a special table and cake. Facilities are gorgeous and well kept. The pool areas are clean and relaxing. Cons : Room, not a place you want to escape to, very out of date and musty smell. We are in 19 right next to a roaring freeway, just so loud and couldn’t open our doors to balcony. Asked to be moved to a quieter room and got offered a room near the generator, almost as loud!!! Room 31933, avoid the block of rooms that run along this section. Looking forward to being home to sleep with quiet. Thanks to the awesome staff who are making our stay so enjoyable.
