A relaxed vacation with a caring staff

If you think a five-star resort is a Ritz-Carlton or something similar, this isn't for you. But it's got beautiful pools (in an "adults only" section, where we were, an Infiniti Pool), lots of restaurants, a nice beach and, most importantly, a staff that truly makes you feel like a guest. Special shout-outs to the Guest Experience staff for the Junior Suite Deluxe Oceanfront buildings (we were #82), Mariana, Carolina and Cesar and, when there were glitches, to Luis at the front desk. Having said that, set expectations. For instance, reserve restaurant meals as soon as they permit. There are four resorts, with close to 3,000 rooms, and reservations fill up. Restaurants vary in quality: the Mediterraneo was excellent food and service (thanks, Cesar); Mikado, served alleged Pad Thai that tasted like a Chinese take-out place dumped soy sauce on noodles and green paper. Read lots of reviews. Yum restaurant is a cafeteria with an enormous selection of food. Breakfast at Kapok near our building was a diverse buffet, with everything from tropical fruit to eggs, meat, etc., though I don't think anyone chose the beet juice. At all restaurants, drinks are free, as are snacks and coffee, such as a cappuccino place in the lobby. The tour I took from the vendor in the hotel lobby to snorkel with the turtles at Akumal was convenient to access and a terrific experience. However, the directions to the meeting place were so skimpy ("Go left from the pool," with no guidance on how long a walk) that I almost missed the tour. Meanwhile, iIf the biggest luxury is silence, there was a constant playing of rap and drum-beat music in all the pools. (Hint: The "adults only" luxury crowd was not that age group, though staff was.) Beach near us was rocky; a different beach does not. Nice views of fish and pelicans in shallow water.. Our room was clean and comfortable, but be aware that two twin beds (a bit larger than standard) are often what you'll get, and that "ocean view" may require looking beyond a restaurant in front of you. With those caveats about realism, my wife and I would recommend this as a memorable, relaxing vacation spot, whether as a couple or with family, at an extremely reasonable price, with a caring staff, and without any pressure to spend on "extras" like wine or spa care.

    Fun Vacay 😀

Great hotel, huge facility, fantastic staff and beautiful location in the land of the jungle! (Hour and a half or more from airport) Grounds are stunning! Many pools, clean but cool (I think because cooler weather just before our arrival) very refreshing in the 30 degree weather we had 😀 Beach and ocean was a beautiful site to look at however if you are a beach baby bring your water shoes for walking and entering in and out of the rocky ocean. Being titled a luxury resort was a little overrated as many rooms are very dated however spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, pillows and bedding! Food and drinks of any kind was endless!

    Moldy rooms and slow service.

Went for a friends wedding. The rooms in villas are very dated and falling apart. The rooms all smelled musty and mold was visible. It’s clear they have not put any money back into the rooms as all of our friends (30 of us in our group) noted the same issue in every room. The pools and beach were decent but service at the bars and beach areas was non existent for the most part. The buffets had a large variety but labels for food were non existent or in the wrong spot. The restaurants if you could get in were very good although unless you book in advance of your arrival the chance of getting a reservation are very limited. I would consider looking at a newer resort if you are expecting a five star experience.

The best resort we've been to in Mexico

The people, the service, the facilities and the pools were all great. We stayed in one of the unrenovated rooms and it was just fine. Villas 86 and 87 next to the infinity pool are great locations. The sheltered lagoons off the beach have some of the best snorkeling I've seen off a resort beach. And the food, wow! The buffets. snack bars, and a la carte restaurants were all amazing. I can't imagine going anywhere else now in the Maya Rivera.

Fantastic Stay at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

Just returned after a week at the Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal with my wife. This is a fantastic resort with a fantastic staff. Everything was exceptional - the food ( a la carts but especially the buffet), The pools, the entertainment, the beach. Everything was clean and well maintained. Manuel and Miguel at the pool bar were fantastic. Hard working and always eager to please. Maya on the entertainment staff went out of her way to include us in the many activities she organized. The Rock City and Back to the 80's shows were excellent, but the shining star was the performance of Frozen by children of guests guided by the obviously capable staff of the kids camp. I am sure many of these young stars will consider this as their first step to an amazing career. Transportation to and from other resorts in the group, and around the grounds was simple by just jumping on one of the many electric shuttle vehicles. The presence of little critters in their natural habitat was very entertaining and the grounds had a beautiful balance of natural forest and manicured grounds. The beach provided options for sheltered wading, or open swimming. (Bring swimming shoes to protect your feet from the natural coral). Lots of beach to walk from Akumal to the Grand Tulum property. Check in and check out were effortless, and Air Canada Vacations did an awesome job with the transfers to and from the resort. Only two slightly negative comments. The steps into the main pool have an overhanging lip which shortens the first stair tread into the water. We saw several guests fall when they slipped off the first step entering the pool. No issue if you are aware of it, but most were not. Second, the resort seems to be very stingy with the mini-bar. Even leaving tips in the fridge did not result in more than 2 beer left per day. (Sometimes we like to have a beverage in the room on a break from the sun or getting ready for supper). A call to room service would get prompt delivery of cold beer, but no more than 2 per guest per day. We would highly recommend this resort and expect to return. we had a great time. One note on the Cancun airport. No problems with check in or security, but once you clear security, be prepared for some serious gouging. All water taps are labeled non-potable and a 500ml bottle of water starts at about $6.00 US. A bag of Chips or a bag of candy is pretty much $10.00 US, and if you want to have a bite of lunch and a beer, be ready for a $70 US bill for a couple on a lite lunch.
