Great resort but wouldn't go back because of lack of sunlight

Great small resort. Everything is easily accessible - Pools, Beach, Buffet, Restaurants. Bars are well spread around but close an hour too early at the beach - no happy hour to make the most of that beautiful end of the day light. An extra hour would change it all! At DC pool area, we always found chairs. Also, pool staff was great. Shout out to Israel and Aaron. Rooms are comfy - bed, pillows, comforter :) Room service is great. Unfortunately, coffee delivered at the room (and served at the buffet) is not great. We love coffee and we're looking forward to be home to sip on something a bit stronger and hot ;) Room mini bar was filled up every day. Infrastructure is build in a manner that half of the rooms get NO SUN at all. All rooms with an uneven number are in the shade 100% of the time. We travel to Mexico to feel the sun on our skin so did not enjoy for one minute our balcony. Even worst, our mom had booked a swim up as she has mobility issues but could not enjoy it at all as it was 100% in the shade and water was freezing as it's not heated. Because you never know which room you will get and even if you reserve (for a few) online, ... I would not go back to this resort. The beach is beautiful. Sand is white and comfortable. Water was warm (end of January) even warmer than the pools. But do not expect turquoise and still water. Bottom is sandy so still very nice to swim. Chairs are comfy and not broken. Walks on the beach are nice as the shoreline is pretty flat. What makes this place great? People! We were about to connect with a few staff and had a great time, thanks to their fantastic personality. At the buffet - they always made sure we had a table outside (it's very noisy inside) and easy to access (mom is in a wheelchair). At the pool, mom always had the royal treatment and my husband always had a bucket filled with cold beers ;) We decided to indulge and treat ourselves with the Diamond Club. Our butler's - David and Rick were gems! Always available to help and provide the information we needed. They made our restaurant reservations and made sure we got what we need at our room. Check in was a breeze as we arrived separately from the rest of the plane. DC lounge is far from the DC so we did not go to enjoy snacks and liquors. Also, there is no outdoor space to sit :( So, to our stand point, the lounge is not a perk to consider at all. DC gives access to Agave restaurant in the morning, which is nice but we preferred the fantastic spread provided at the buffet and the flexibility it gave for intake rhythm. We had long and relaxing breakfast. Lobby is open and aired but windy. Seating is uncomfortable and impossible to play boardgames (cards fly off) and tables are very low so breaks your back after a few minutes. There are no other area really to sit and chill as the other place is by the main pool and it's noisy with music. Lobby is nice in the early morning to grab coffee from coffee bar (only place where its good) and sit in an uncomfortable chair to feel the sun (remember half of the hotel rooms are in complete shade). Other big downside for us that would not make us go back is the taxi cartel... Price is very very steep to exit the hotel to go to Puerto Morelos, Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Collectivo is a 3.5km away from the hotel with NO transportation to get to the main road to catch it. Taxi prices are just crazy. And that's too bad as if it was less, loads of people would probably get off the resort for a day and inject some money in the local economy. Oh... And prices of excursions... Does not make sense at all. Everything is at least 185USD. And the SPA? They are just laughing at us with those prices. Now, let me finish by reviewing the gym facilities... WOW! ALL staff were fantastic and helpful. Équipement is well.maintained and well displayed. There was a lot of people in there every morning but didn't feel crampy. The sessions offered are also good (but short). Finally, the pickleball and tennis courts are great!!!! The gym and courts are the best I've seen in the hotel/resort world! And I travel a lot for work and train I those gyms regularly. Overall, we had a great stay but would not go back... Unless we find a great great deal, are sure we can secure a room with sunlight and are ok with not going out of the resort.

    Great time for the family!

We had a great time at this resort. It was very family oriented, and overall a good experience. We had some minor issues here and there, but nothing to really make a big deal about. My kids had a FANTASTIC time. I loved how there was lots to do for both of my kids (8 year age gap) together. The Club House Kids Club was the BEST for my 10 year old! She loved it so much, she went every day for crafts and play . The staff was AMAZING! Thank you Carolina, Pao, Kari and Vero ! You made her stay the most memorable one so far at a Royalton Resort. We appreciated it very much!

    Great service, great food

Great trip. The resort is showing a little wear, but the service and food made up for it. Everyone was friendly and fast at their jobs. We had the best night with Egido at Agave. He had a great sense of humor and made us feel at home! His supervisor Jesus was also very kind and friendly. Can’t forget Sandra with the guacamole cart - ¡Qué Rico! This was the guac we’d been looking for. Best meal we had. Miguel, Jacinto & Alberto worked their tails off at the pool bar all afternoon. Juvenal was fast and hard-working and made us several special drink concoctions at the Hideaway beach bar. Cesar at the Caribbean was the full of energy & desire to please. And Ernesto was eager to hear our thoughts about our time at the resort. The only problem with our room that I mentioned to him was fixed right away. Truly, great service.

Hotel Royalton wedding beautiful location terrible service

The hotel app did not work at all and you have to use it to make a reservation. It definitely feels like the hotel wanted to take advantage of the situation as bottle water was 13$ each. A can of bug spray was 28$ for the small can. Booze was all inclusive but it was the cheapest alcohol you can get. Unless you upgraded then you had to purchase premium booze. Not cool. Went for a wedding and they shut the party down for the reception at 9pm? Who ends a wedding at 9? Then they were suppose to have Karaoke but said we went over the time allowance? People were super friendly and the staff was amazing but the upper management and wedding venue needs to do better.

All the bad reviews were true! Wasted time and money!

Do not be fooled by the good reviews! The resort is so far out of date and dirty. Plus so many conflicting comments by staff at the resort on prices and booking extra services/excursions. They also try to suck you into a time share type of scenario. First off through Apple Vacations says they were to offer a $40 bottle of wine per room, $300 resort credit (which is a coupon book). Used nothing of use in coupon book and never received wine. Even after multiple attempts our group still never recieved the wine. Every day someone comes up to you to take pictures and try book services. We went this past week with adult family members. There were 7 of us and a total of 4 rooms. They split us up all over the one side of the resort and the rooms went from ok to terrible. Unfortunately my husband and I got the worst of the rooms. The bed had a huge rut in the middle, bedding was stained, the mirrors were pitted, paint was sloppy, the ceiling paint was cracked and the jacuzzi on the roof was useless. We were missing a coffee table and the seat at the foot of the bed. The staff at the front desk was of no help at all and weren't even willing to compromise. This was echoed by numerous people we had talked to throughout the week. The water most of the time smelled terrible in the rooms. The resort on the non diamond club side was terribly out of date. The roof about the pool bar near Grazie Italian restaurant was in deplorable condition and a rusty nail was in the pool. The whole beach was dirty and random garbage on it. The Italian restaurant had good food but the deck was improperly built and had a lot of bowing in the trex decking and way too much give in between the supports. The roof also leaked in the middle of dinner when a brief rain shower came through and the support beams for the roof were severely rusted through. There are a good bit of cats around the resort and are not being taking care of. One has sores on his back hips and sadly looks sick. Raccoons run the halls at night eating what ever food was leftover from room services ordered. Plus a huge cockroach ran past the dance floor up the wall near the main pool under lobby. We ate at Agave mexican restaurant, food was good and waiter was great but power went out 4 times only in certain sections of the restaurant. You had to make reservations on their app but no more than 1 and no more than 48 hrs in advance. So it was nearly impossible so we ate at the buffet most of the time. That led to the next disaster. The manager of the buffet at night would pick and choose who he'd throw out. First night I was asked to leave and change for being in a black sleeveless dress and black flip flops... by the way many other women we similarly dresed. Other nights he'd pick and choose which men had to change their shoes from flip flops to closed toed shoes. Most of the issues were towards men and sometimes in our group. It was like the manager was real big on stereotyping. My mother had some very strong words for him after the second time he picked on us and not some of the other guest that were dressed exactly the same. We have never been treated like this at any other resort we have ever been to. Overall the staff was nice but good luck dealing with anyone in the lobby check in area. We checked throughout the week on our invoice on our TV. They tried charging us a environmental fee for the whole trip again $43 and bottle services for $110. We had to fight on 3 separate occasions all the way up to checkout to rectify the charges. They couldn't even produce the invoice from the delivery of the bottle of Jack Daniels on the night in questioned and we weren't even at the resort. They didn't want to have to eat the false charge to our room. Definitely not worth the $17000 our family spent just at the rooms and excursions.
