    Secrets Tulum (Not Recommended)

We stayed at Secrets Tulum from 2 to 9 April 2024. We have stayed at 14 different Secrets resorts, one Hyatt Zilara, and all of Excellence resorts. This is only the second Secrets that we would not recommend (Secrets St Maarten being the other). While we were well informed prior to our arrival, the fact that the resort is “currently” about 15 minutes away from the beach is the biggest problem. I say currently because there is clearly a lot of construction going on around the resort. Traffic at times was already bad and once these other resorts/condos finish it is only going to get worse. Plus, the 15 minutes is just the driving time. On the way back, we had to wait 10 minutes for the van to show up, then sat in the van for 15 minutes (even after a second van arrived) and then had the 15-minute drive…so 40 minutes which real soon will be longer as the traffic gets worse. Also, unless you arrive very early, the seating and shade options are very limited. There are not nearly enough umbrellas for the beach area and they will not provide umbrellas inside the “compound” which has some limited shade from the palm trees. The first van leaves at 0900 and there is no line, so there are pushy people who will cut in front of you and the van only holds 12 people. Not the kind of frustration we want on vacation. We only went to the beach 3 days out of the week due to the hassle getting there and back and that one of the days they had no bottled water. We drink some during the day, but we also drink lots of water when it is so hot on the beach. Not having bottled water at the beach was completely unacceptable. All that said, the beach is very nice and had very little seaweed the first two visits but a ton on the third day. The beach is also great for walking in either direction from the resort with nice level/hard sand and has very pretty, blue water. Another plus is the beach club has lockers so while we were walking the beach, our phones and kindles were securely locked away. The Seaside Grill, although severely understaffed, was made acceptable because Jose (one of the two servers) was literally running from table to kitchen to table to try to keep up. He really impressed us with his effort and his great attitude. Another issue with the resort that lots of people have already talked about is the sand, it is everywhere. The poor cleaning staff are perpetually sweeping and mopping up sand. It’s all over the lobby, around the pools, were the tried to have a silent disco. But around the pools is the worse because you get out of the pool and you must step in the sand, and then you must step in the sand to get back in the pool…so there is a lot of sand in the pools. The fact that the buildings are circular with the pools in the middle of each building means there is not a lot of air flow to keep you cool at the pools. Restaurants. There are only three dinner restaurants and the menus are limited. The Blue Water Grill is outside with no cover at all so if it rains, they only have 2 restaurants. Compare this to Secrets Akumal which has 6 restaurants for dinner. Also, the room service menu is one of the most limited of our resort stays. Entertainment is almost non-existent. There is no theater facility. They had a movie almost every night as the “entertainment” where you could watch it on the stairs leading down to the center pool area. In the week we were there they had an acrobat show (that was not good compared to other similar shows), a silent disco in the sand, and they had an 80’s band that played for only 40 minutes. There was no other live music. Despite having a lot of entertainment staff, there really was no entertainment during the day either. At breakfast one morning, one of the entertainment staff told us they were having a special at 5 PM…bead bracelet making. I thought the guy was joking but he was dead serious. They did have a foam party on the roof top pool that they played up all morning, telling everyone that it was starting at noon. After waiting almost 30 minutes with no activity other than a lot of entertainment staff talking to themselves, we left and went to lunch. The foam party started after 1:15. TV System. We are not normally big TV watchers on vacation but we were there during the NCAAM and NCAAW final four and championship games. The TV system in our room was marginally better than the one in the sports bar. The TV signal was extremely poor, glitchy, and with frequent lock ups. Watching the games was very frustrating…every 2 minutes the picture would freeze for about 20 seconds and then start back up…while you missed all of the 20 seconds of the game. Also, the sports bar main door was broken and stuck open making the space hot and humid. The furniture was also extremely uncomfortable and not conducive to watching sports (not that the tvs work well enough to watch sports). Room. The room was nice, clean, and cool. The cleaning staff kept the room clean, but there were no frills such as towel art, flowers, etc. that many of the other resorts staff would do. But again, a nice room. Fitness Center. Was below average for the resorts we have stayed at in terms of equipment, but the AC worked and there was always an entertainment staff member there (although he really did not make the workout any more entertaining). The equipment included some treadmills, some bikes, a smith machine, a cable machine that did not have enough weight or bars to be very useful, one leg machine, and some dumbbells. Most regular US hotels (Hyatt, Marriot, etc) have a similar gym. Breakfast. Was awesome! Great omelets, crispy bacon, and overall, a decent spread. Staff. The staff were very good and they are why we keep coming back to Secrets and Excellence resorts. They were friendly, helpful, and provided excellent service across the resort. Tania who worked at our pool just kept circling the pool ensuring everyone had what they wanted while being very friendly and upbeat despite wearing long sleeves and pants while we were hot in swim suits. At breakfast and when we ate lunch at the buffet, Jair would continually go above and beyond to make us feel right at home. Would we go back to this resort? Even with the great service from the staff, we will not return to this resort and cannot recommend it. There are way better options within the Hyatt/Secrets umbrella that have a better beach arrangement, better facilities, and better entertainment. We have an opening special rate week booked for late October that we will be canceling (even though it is a great rate and will cost $50 to cancel it). We also talked our daughter out of going to this resort for her honeymoon.

    Tulum a magical place

I recently visited Secrets Tulum and had an incredible time. The weather was perfect, the resort was stunningly beautiful with amazing amenities, food was delicious at all restaurants but specifically Grotto which is a preferred area for guests where Eduardo and Viviana provided exceptional service to make our stay even more pleasant , bike tour around property guided by a res resort team member who did great job explaining history of region while showing us different areas strong the village that truly felt like paradise on earth; drinks were good everywhere we went within premises especially when served by Antonio at the rendezvous bar making sure everyone's glass stayed full throughout their visit - Manuel from entertainment team made sure there wasn’t ever dull moment during beach activities or poolside games so big shoutout goes out him too! Giancarlo helped address minor concerns promptly ensuring everything else ran smoothly without any issues whatsoever – definitely looking forward returning come August.

    A worthy gamble.

Just returned from 4 days at Secrets Tulum and we’re having serious withdrawal. Our room (swim-up), the cuisine, drinks, and service were what you hope and wish to experience every vacation. Admittedly, I was hesitant about staying here after seeing how many guests have had subpar vacations - even considering the resort is still in infancy. However, I’m glad we took the gamble and gave them a chance. Arturo & Valeria, our Preferred Club concierge and host, were very gracious and attentive to our needs. The rooftop pool staff was delightful and made sure to check on us periodically. We did not get a chance to dine at Olio or Veranda, but the food everywhere else was delicious. Best dinner was by far at Bluewater Grill. The ambiance, the presentation, and the service was A-1! The shuttle to/from the beach was a minor inconvenience that only took about 10-15 minutes. And that beach is so worth it. It’s one of the better beaches I’ve visited in Quintana Roo and the beach club’s food was delicious as well. We also left for a bit to take a walk around the shops adjacent to the beach club. There was never a wait for the shuttle but we strategically chose to go when there wouldn’t be large crowds coming & going (if you wait to take the last shuttle back I imagine you should expect longer wait times). The spa was also amazing and I would definitely recommend Maracruz and Leydi to anyone needing a good Swedish! The 80s tribute show was very cool but we opted for the beach instead of the foam party. I will say it was not ALL good (to be fair) .. there was an occasional sewage smell in the bathroom but it luckily did not extend into the room (there is no bathroom door so that was interesting). We also placed food in the “secret” box on Friday night and requested a pickup. The pickup was confirmed that night. Departing on Monday, I opened it to check and found that the food was still sitting there from three nights prior and was covered in ants. Again, it was minor because we could’ve gone home not realizing it but that’s only because we never ordered room service again. All in all, this was a wonderful vacation and I would certainly visit Secrets Tulum in the future!

    5 Star Review

Getting ready to leave from a 4 night stay. This place is absolutely wonderful. Amazing vibes, chill, staff are amazing, food was 10/10. We chose this resort because it was unique to other resorts we have been too. Had sand around the pools, the architecture, and had a beach club. The ride didn’t bother us at all as we were able to see Tuluum. Took a Bloody Mary with us for the road every am and had a beer on the way back in the afternoon. As it is newer there is definitely room for improvement but we are very chill ppl so it didn’t bother us. Sometimes service was inconsistent but we are in a resort so was never in a hurry, we didn’t do preferred club but from walking around the resort it really didn’t seem like you needed it. If you are looking for a huge party scene it’s pry not the place for you. But if looking to chill with a little bit of party it’s your spot. If you expect perfection and can’t look past minor details you will pry want to allow this place to get through their growing pains. Definitely worth coming too and we had an amazing time.
