Typical Disney resort and that’s a compliment.

We had our first stay at Aulani after years of Disney trips and resorts. It is a typical Disney resort minus the parks and add an ocean. If you couldn’t see the Ocean you would swear you were in a resort at Disney World. Plenty of pools, restaurants, characters, friendly staff and immaculate grounds. Beautiful property and a nice way to spend a few days in Hawaii.

    Beautiful place—welcoming service!!!

This place is so beautiful and has such a natural feeling all around the resort. We’re staying in a one bedroom villa and it seems like a little bigger overall than some other DVC resorts with the same type of room. So well built, will withstand pretty high winds. My only complaint at all is that the pools and river close before it’s actually dark even though everything is well lit.

Price gouging at its finest. Don’t waste your money.

We’ve stayed in Hawaii a few different times and decided to stay here. Was pretty disappointed with how old the rooms are for the price and Disney marketing their DVC every chance they got. It was quite ridiculous. They had people in line trying to give you a sales pitch to attend a timeshare event. For how much we paid to stay here I’d probably never stay again. Disney has gone downhill. Everything is price gouging and an additional charge to do almost anything on the resort. The pools and location were the only good thing about the resort.

Amazing resort but too busy and very expensive

The resort is amazing, lots of pools, lazy river, snorkelling in the aquarium, the beach area is fantastic with a calm shallow water lagoon. The problem is its very busy so unless you get down to the pools early morning you will struggle to get a sun lounger anywhere! we always managed to get a lounger on the beach though. There are too many rooms for the facilities to cope. We stood for 15 minutes waiting to get a ring for the 2 waterslides but gave up. We did the catamaran boat trip that sets off from the beach which was a nice hour trip but quite expensive at $120 each. As you would expect from a disney hotel everything is very expensive but we found quite a lack of disney and entertainment in the hotel. The characters walk round the pool areas but apart from that there was zero entertainment on an evening which we were quite surprised at given the price of the room per night. We stayed 3 nights and that was enough. Not all the restaurants were open during our stay either so we ended up eating at 'off the hook' for 3 nights in a row which didnt have a huge menu. We had a great time but at this price range I expected more.

    Overhyped… overcrowded…

Overhyped, overcrowded, and very poor value for nearly $900 a night. We really wanted to love Aulani, but the experience did not come close to justifying the price. The resort is extremely crowded. Pools, the lazy river, slides, restaurants, towels, even getting a float can involve waiting in line. We joked that the lazy river is slow because of the traffic jam. Pool chairs are also difficult to find unless you claim one early in the morning, and the rooms felt surprisingly small for this price level. What surprised us most is that there really isn’t that much of a Disney experience either. You don’t see characters everywhere or feel immersed in Disney the way you might expect. It feels more like a regular crowded resort with Disney branding and Disney-level pricing. We also stayed at the Marriott in Ko Olina and found it more relaxing, less crowded, easier to get pool chairs, and a much better overall value. If you’re coming specifically because you’re a huge Disney fan, I would manage your expectations. If you’re coming for a relaxing Hawaiian resort vacation, there are better options in Ko Olina. A beautiful property, but too crowded, too expensive, and not enough Disney magic to justify the premium.
