Our Beautiful Home Away From Home

I visit this resort with my parents every year and this was about our 8th visit. We are from England and we stayed for 14 nights. This is an honest review of our experience this time. CHECK IN: From the moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome. The bell service team are outstanding. They greet you and take your luggage straight away and wait for you to check-in. They take you to your room and carry everything for you, they are brilliant and deserve high praise. The check-in and guest services team are great, especially Fernando. He made us feel welcome and helped us with anything we needed during our whole stay. Fernando is an excellent representative of the company. The check-in process was smooth and efficient. ROOMS: We stayed in an ocean front room and it was gorgeous. They really are worth the extra money. They are clean, spacious and the huge TV with Wi-Fi is brilliant! The beds are comfortable and it is really quiet and peaceful at night. The housekeeping staff do a brilliant job. GROUNDS: The whole resort is beautiful, lush and well maintained. Anybody that thinks that it is not well maintained must be staying somewhere else. The staff work tirelessly to keep it clean and safe. It is a beautiful paradise. ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment at this resort is fantastic. Erick from the entertainment team is outstanding and a shining example of why Bahia Principe is such a great company. Erick was friendly and welcoming from the start and we loved taking part in activities like Bingo and Ring Toss with him. We also loved Armando, Dominigo, Victor and David. Victor is the best at aqua gym and Alejandro does a great job leading the team. There is plenty of entertainment on offer in the day and evening. We really loved the movie trivia every Friday evening. It was a lot of fun and made a welcome change from just dancing to a live band. We would like more activities like this. The live shows are great, especially the Origin show. We really miss the Michael Jackson show that they used to have a few years ago. It would be nice to see that one return. We absolutely loved the Mexican Fiesta on a Saturday, that is outstanding. FOOD: We thought the service in the main Yucatan buffet was very good this year. There is something for everyone. The truck is a great place to eat but at busy times the service is really slow. We ate at the Tequila restaurant and that was gorgeous. We were disappointed with the service at the Don Pablo this year. We felt rushed and like the restaurant was way too crowded. Maybe we were just unlucky with the day and time we chose. A NEGATIVE POINT: The only thing that was not good this year for us was the amount of people smoking around the main pool and the terrace area, especially in the evening. I understand it is difficult to control this but we have never experienced this problem before on our previous trips. It really spoilt our enjoyment of the terrace area in the evening. One night, we asked someone on guest services if smoking was allowed on the terrace and he said, “smoking is forbidden in all public areas, I will send someone to sort it out”. Nobody came and did anything about it. I understand that this would not be a problem for everyone but for us it was a big problem and I have to be honest. OVERALL: This resort is outstanding and we would not choose to stay anywhere else in Mexico. It is a home away from home and the staff are incredibly hard working and it is very special. We always feel totally safe and secure at any time of the day. Everyone’s experience is different but we always have a wonderful time and we can’t wait to visit again! Thank you, Bahia Principe, for another beautiful vacation!

Decent mid-range resort but needs to revamp drink mixes

We visited Bahia Principe Grand Tulum in Jan with another couple and their 10-yr-old son. We go to Mexico every year, typically to a higher end adults only resort so this was a different trip for us. It was the first trip for the other family so our experiences were different. Overall, the resort has pretty good. VERY large so be prepared to walk. Yes, there are shuttles if you want but we enjoyed the exercise. The staff was good as we're the grounds. We did the bike tour which was decent but could have been better. The rooms were good although the bathroom situation could be awkward if you're not completely comfortable with each other. We did have the room attendant walk in without knocking (or knocking while opening the door) 3 times so use your locks. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and wish we could have tried all the restaurants. The limit on a la cartes is one of the differences between the higher and middle range resorts. The buffet was very good and changed daily. I wish they would correct the description of the Tequila restaurant as this is definitely a buffet that you have to book, not an a la carte restaurant. My favourite restaurant was Nikkei Mashua, the Japanese Peruvian fusion place. My 2 biggest complaints about this resort were: 1. The morning coffee options. Our room was across from the Truck Stop and oddly, it doesn't offer coffee in the morning. The only place to get coffee (ousltside of the buffet) is the lobby bar and this usually only had tiny plastic cups (as they were usually out of paper coffee cups). It made it very inconvenient to have a decent-sized coffee on the beach near our room. I'm not sure why the Truck Stop doesn't also have a coffee station. 2. The drinks. And this isn't the usual "the drinks were too weak" or "the liquor was subpar generic brand" complaint . My issue is the mix. Every juice-type mix is cheap and awful. Margaritas taste like frozen concentrated lemonade, piña coladas are made with sugary coconut flavoured syrup and even Bloody Marys and micheladas use pre-mixed seasoning which means no customizing the way you like them. The resort really needs to improve what they're buying as it is far below the standards of anything else we've had in Mexico. Also of note is that the spa will not charge tips to your room which means if you don't have cash on hand, employees go without tips. That seems like a pretty crappy way for an employer to deal with tipping.

    GBPTulum 03/2024 (58)

Having visited this resort over the past 23 years, we were not disappointed. Tulum is our ‘second home’ , which says alot for the staff, from the managers to the gardeners. We have made so many friends over the years and maintain contact with them even if they no longer work at the resort. It is so easy to make new friends as the staff are incredible. They remember you from visit to visit. They even welcome us to their homes. The resort is well maintained, both on the grounds and the buildings. There is no shortage of food selection either in the buffets or the ala carts. If you have trouble finding anything, you are way to fussy 😩. Seriously, plenty of choices. Plenty of alcohol choices as well. Is it perfect, no of course not. Have things changed since Covid, of course. But it is a different world now. Get over it. The people here are amazing. The beaches are wonderful. Yes, there are rocks on the beaches but, that’s mother nature, not Bahia. Be grateful for having the opportunity to be there. I won’t name names of the staff for fear of forgetting one or two. They are all wonderful…Managers, Guest Services, Reception, Wait Staff, Bartenders, Maids, Mini bar staff, Gardeners…everyone. So relax, enjoy and have a great vacation. One thing…don’t sweat the small stuff.

Good holiday - but services slipping

This is our 4th visit here and we had a good 2 week stay. Check in was fine, but the room was only made up for 2 rather than 3 with insufficient bedding and towels, so we had to wait after very long days travelling. The rooms are standard with a large bed and sofa bed. The bathrooms really need a revamp. The Tortuga restaurant was open for breakfast which was handy and saved the walk to the main buffet. Every day we were left with insufficient bath towels. We had no shower soap, shampoo and coffee on a number of occasions so I started leaving notes to request these from the cleaner as a call to room service never really worked out. The main pool area around Tulum is nice, with a main snack bar serving burgers, chicken wings, ice cream etc. it’s quite basic and the local bird population constantly dive bomb any food left out - I had a half eat chicken wing land on my shoulder!!! There were bits of food floating around the pool most days. There is a small self service drinks station here as well, but oh my goodness if can find a cup hang onto it. The waitress here is very possessive of the cups and doesn’t like to put many out, presumably as it means more cleaning for her. Most people hang onto their cup for the day - I placed one on the inside of my bag and the waitress actually went into my bag when I was in the pool to take it out! Maybe there should be a lot more cups in the first place!!! This self service area usually opened on time however it always shut much earlier than advertised. I noticed that the mobile bar here stopped after 2 days - not sure why. The delicious daily BBQ on the beach here has also stopped which is a great shame. The kids splash area is good and the lifeguards are attentive-shutting the pool twice for unwanted human leftovers if you get my drift. We used Coba pool a few times. This is much bigger with entertainment and a much bigger snack bar as well as a swim up bar ( this needs upgrading as there are broken tiles all over) - however the ice cream runs out in the snack bar about 3pm and doesn’t get replaced. We prefer the buffet in Coba as there is a greater choice and the food seems better prepared. However the food overall is very good. Our son has a peanut allergy and the chefs were always happy to advise on what to avoid, although cross contamination with the serving cutlery is a problem. My wife caught tonsillitis, I had a day out with the runs and our son ended up with a sore ear infection during our stay. Not sure you can blame the hotel for this but it’s the first time all 3 of us have been ill on the same holiday. All the staff work hard (other than the cup waitress) and are always happy to help. Overall it was a good holiday but I feel there are cutbacks here which has reduced the overall services and standards. I think we would consider other hotels first next time.

    Don't stay here

Went with teen granddaughter for spring break. Pros:. Weather was great, grounds well kept and beaches nice and great view from room. Catermeran excursion to isle of mujeres was great and so was atv ride and monkey sanctuary. XelHa was not worth money. No fish, we were bored and left via taxi after 4 hrs of all day trip. Cons: Food: buffets had long lines (kids constantly cutting in lines), frequently out of food. They waited until empty to start making more. Lady at food truck extremely rude to customers. All drinks served in 10 oz plastic cups, Watered down and not good. A server handed my 16 yr old a note with his name and phone number. This was extremely disturbing to both of us and made the rest of the trip uncomfortable and she was afraid to leave my side. Was he just dumb? Part of cartel or trafficking? Scary. ROOMS:. We asked for 2 double beds. Got stuck with a King. So 1 person slept on sofa for a week. Our door jamb was not level and couldn't open, close or lock the door without pulling up on the door. Our bathroom sink was clogged and despite asking for it to be cleaned it remained that way all week and was disgusting. Housekeeper was friendly, but always shorted us towels, etc. Beaches: other resorts us tractors with industrial rakes to clean up seaweed quickly in the morning. This resort used big equipment and manuel labor which took about 6 hrs each day and was noisy. Most staff weren't friendly or unfriendly...just matter of fact. This resort also was mostly families with tiny children. Transportation ppl and Amstar were nice. Lastly, told Apple all of our concerns and problems. They said resort denied everything (of course they would) and pretty much called us liars!!!!!! Wouldn't stay here again and will not be using Apple again either. Not a good experience and we have traveled a lot in the Caribbean.
