Relaxing but Frontline Lobby and Timeshare harassment spoilt it
As this was our first time in Punta Cana, we wanted to stay with a familiar chain. We have been customers of Bahia Principe Tuulum over the past 10 years and have also found our stays to be pleasurable. There are no direct flights from Vancouver. So getting there is a day+. Leaving 10:30pm to Toronto 6am. Layover for 3 hours then in Punta Cana 3:30 pm and Bahia resort area 5:30. Our Westjet Vacation package included transport to and from the resort. Therefor, if this is what you have or if you prebooked transportation, do not get lured by the hostess after your bag scan. Then will say they are the transportation but take you to the sight seeing counters. Instead walk straight out and all the transportation representatives are in the lobby. Once we arrived at the Bahia Complex, we were taken back by the sheer size of the resort. There is Turquesa, Punta Cana, Acquamarine, Barvia, Ambar, Fantasia. Talk more about the differences later in this review. As other reviewers have noted, the check in staff are cold. Not on person greeted us with a welcome or a smile. Instead it was, "checking in? what is your name?" Followed by, here are all the rules. The person that tended to us offered to upgrade us to the Ambar for 900 USD. We asked what the difference was and basically you had access to all the restaurants, rather than the 3 included in the package and newer rooms. We declined. Every question we posed after had a curt reply, Ending with You can only eat here and there, here's you band. To the BP management, this has to change, The lobby staff is customers first impression of your business. As such, first impressions matter the most. They project the appear of not wanting to be there. And yes, this was throughout the 9 days. Rooms are getting dated and is in need of a desperate refresh. The lights in the room are dim, I mean dark. We called the hotel concierge, tried to explain in Spanish and again, the mannerism was very curt. That said, they sent up maintenance he said he couldn't do anything about it. I called back down to ask if they could bring up another floor lamp. Answer was no. A bit about the complex. The Turquesa is the furthest from the beach. About a 10 minute brisk walk or 4 minutes jumping on the trolleys. The resort is much quieter and calm. The pool was rarely busy. As such, finding a pool lounge was easy and access to the pool bar was a breeze (rarely a line up). There was always activities and entertainment to keep things interesting. They served poolside lunch. which was such a treat. Lastly, to Bahia Principe. I can understand that you are trying to elevate customer experience by offering Privilege club Membership (timeshare). We were approached on the second day, attended the 45 minute session but turned it down. 2-3 times everyday, someone approached us about joining. Your clients are there to relax and enjoy their vacation, not to be harassed.

A great getaway
We had a great experience. The service was phenomenal. The a la carte restaurants were good; however, the dinner buffets were mediocre and cold. The beach was gorgeous.

On the beach the salesman’s don't let you be in peace and you find very few umbrellas. The experience was really good but you have to stop selling anythings for one to enjoy on the beach

Loved our New Year’s stay
I want to give a huge shout-out to the staff at this resort. They were absolutely amazing, so energetic, always smiling, dancing, and genuinely helpful. You could really feel their positive energy everywhere. The cleanliness of the resort truly stood out. Everywhere we looked, someone was cleaning or fixing something. The bathrooms near the pools, close to the beach, and throughout the resort were always spotless. This is especially impressive considering how many guests there were and how large the resort is. We stayed at Turquesa, and I just want to add a small heads up for anyone with mobility issues. The buildings do not have elevators, only stairs, although there are rooms available on the ground floor. It is not an issue if you are comfortable walking, but it is something good to know in advance. The room itself was comfortable, and the bed was great. That said, the room is a bit outdated, and you can clearly see that some things could be refreshed or fixed. However, this did not bother us at all. It was a minor detail and did not affect our stay in any way. Speaking of size, the resort is huge, but there is always something to do. We spent New Year’s Eve there, and the celebration was incredible. It was a huge party and so much fun. The only small downside was the VIP area, which felt a bit too exclusive. It did not bother me much, but I do think it could have been more equal so everyone could enjoy the experience the same way. Still, it was not a big deal overall. There were activities happening all the time. Salsa classes, Zumba, pool competitions, and more. Every time you looked, something fun was going on. We did not travel with kids, but we could see that there was a kids’ area and daycare, and the children seemed to absolutely love it. The food was great. Fresh, tasty, and very good considering the price. No complaints at all. Drinks and water were always available whenever we needed them, which made the experience even better. As for the beach, just a small heads up. If you want a good spot with shade, wake up early and save your space. On our first day, we did not do that and ended up without any shade. After that, we learned our lesson. Waking up early made it possible to enjoy the beach comfortably all day. We walked along the beach past several other resorts, and I can confidently say that Bahia Principe had the cleanest beach. The staff was constantly cleaning it, and it was spotless. No complaints at all. Overall, we had an amazing time, and it was the perfect way to start the New Year. I cannot wait to come back, next time with my whole family.
