Great stay- but I have some tips

Overall our experience wasn’t bad? Service was wonderful, everything was clean and for the most part staff was lovely. The grounds and beach were stunning. Be careful during spring time with sea grass. It can smell pretty bad. We know it’s not always there but warning there. We really enjoyed our stay but somethings to think about before selecting this resort; Adults only is pretty limited to a corner pretty far from everything. And isn’t “poppin” it was pretty low key. Which we liked sometimes but the pool closed at 5. The main pools closed at 6 which was disappointing. Not all the bars were open all the time either. We felt as though there wasn’t a lot to do from 5-10pm other than eat dinner. Knowing what amenities you had access to was difficult unless you asked around. We didn’t even know there was adults only restaurant near us. TIP! Make your dinner reservations ten days in advance!!!! We didn’t know and ate at the buffet most of the time which was fine. But as a friend group we wanted to get all fancy and do dinner as a family. If you’re looking for an adults only resort this isn’t the best choice. Overall wonderful stay! But just a little bummed.

    Great trip, average resort

We visited Bahia Principe Coba in 2018, so were happy to return to Akumal this time around. We had a great experience at Coba. Our experience at Akumal was pleasant and a wonderful trip was had by all, however there are definitely some needed improvements. The hotel was starting renovations the day we left to further update the remainder of the villas. This probably wouldn't have changed our opinions as we were fine with our room. It was outdated most definitely, but when you're just there to sleep in it - it did the trick. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful, but lacked upkeep. We were so disappointed to see constant garbage thrown to the sides of the pathways and in the vegetation. This is not the fault of the hotel - ignorant hotel guests littering - however, SO many staff members walked past that garbage only to leave it there the entire duration of our stay. We were at the resort for 9 days and for 7 of those days we walked past a broken wine glass on the pathway to our villa. Empty cups, cans, water bottles and other garbage were strewn in multiple places, not just the main thoroughfares. Another con was the lack of main lobby bar and the complete lack of food places between the lunch/supper buffet. At any other resort we've been too there's been a beach hut or snack bar but this was not the case at Akumal. We were allowed to use the adjoining hotels, but the food trucks at Coba were closed. We booked our suppers late to make the most of the day, but it was hard to tide the kids over till 8-830, when there was nothing to eat. A definite plus of this chain is the unlimited a la carte bookings. We made the most of this every night. The Italian (Dolce Vita) was fabulous, Mikado Tepanyaki is fun (shout out to Jose!), but stay away from the Indian and the Mexican (named Tequila). They were awful! The buffet at Akumal had tons of variety and Eric our morning/lunch waiter was fabulous. The entertainment staff deserves a shout out. Erik was my son's best friend helping him participating in water polo, volleyball, and crazy games. Thank you Erik! We adored him. Alexa, the Zumba and aquafit instructor, was amazing. I loved taking her classes daily. She is adorable and fun. Snorkeling is fabulous! So good for the entire family even kids as it's shallow and the fish are everywhere. This was the best part of the trip for some of our family! All in all, none of the cons ruined our vacation by any means. We still had a fabulous time. Our families however have been to enough locations in Mexico to similar chain resorts, and agreed that "luxury" should not have been in the title of this resort. There's definitely room for improvement for the price we paid for this resort.

Excellent experience from the beauty of the resort, activities and entertainment to the quality of service, variety and quality of food and the friendliness of staff. My husband and I felt welcome, catered to and valued. We highly recommend this resort!

Great time. Would go back again!:)

Had such a great time. I would definitely go back to this resort. Food was delicious, staff were friendly, service was great, and it was clean. Only thing I would say it was hard to get into a la carte but we did end up getting into two. Thanks to staff Edgar, Mr.G, Ariana and I wish I could remember the other name but great service!

    Wonderful experience yet again

The bad reviews are so mind blowing to me, we just came home from our second trip to this resort and had a wonderful time. They started renovations while we were there and they didn’t affect us at all, we stayed in an unrenovated room which was perfectly fine. Upon arrival they noticed that our son’s 10th birthday was the following day and the staff member Nathaniel(not the right spelling) had arranged for a cake to be sent to the room! Such a wonderful gesture! The main pool is tough to get loungers unless you are there early, but there is a second pool between the main one and the infinity pool that was practically empty every day and we had no trouble getting shade and on some days had the whole pool to ourselves! We booked a la carte restaurants in advance and ended up cancelling all of them because the buffet was such a hit for our son, all of us being able to eat what we wanted was great and they have some staples that are available every night but they change the rest based on a theme so you could have different meals every night! We were incredibly impressed with the staff, every person we encountered was fantastic, we needed maintenance to come fix our toilet at one point, and while I didn’t get their name, they were so quick arriving and fixed the problem right away, and then we had someone from the front desk call to make sure our issue was resolved. My son also cut his toe(very minor) at one point by the pool and they immediately had multiple life guards, security and hotel staff attend to him, the lifeguard that was there first I believe her name was Nicole(?) was absolutely wonderful either way our son. The entire kids club staff I can’t say enough about, my son begged to go to kids club every day, they all went above and beyond to give him such a great experience. We frequented the sports bar in the evenings since hockey playoffs had just started and the staff there were fantastic as well. The arcade is another great option to entertain the kids in the evenings. The silent disco was awesome, foam party in the pool, magic show, trivia night, I could go on, the entertainment was all fantastic. Never waited long for a cart of we needed it, but usually walked to the main area from 65 block which is you take the beach path takes mere minutes to walk. My husband and son both enjoyed golfing while we were there, such a beautiful course and you can buy packages at the course if you want to play multiple rounds. We will absolutely be back to this resort, it will only be better once the renovations are completed. Akumal is absolutely the better resort to stay at as you have the options of enjoying all the resorts, adults only areas, kids areas, busy or quiet areas depending on what you are feeling that day. I highly recommend this resort.
