Sep 14, 2026Came back to Barcelo, this time to Colonial after Maya Palace
We went to Barcelo Maya Palace 2 years ago and this time we decided to check a more budget option - Maya Colonial. The price was great, especially because it was an off season. For that reason the hotel was half empty, which was great, seats and beach beds available any time of the day, practically empty. There were a few groups of teenagers (or early 20s) from Spain and they partied hard, so we tried to switch to the other side every time. They also threw up in bathrooms everywhere which was not great at all, but the staff cleaned up pretty fast. The rest of the experience was just average. In the evenings there was not much to do apart from the main show, there was no live music anywhere or some kind of games or music/dance for families or adults. The shows were so so as well, only a couple were good. Maybe it was due to the off season time. The drinks (alcohol) were not the same as in Maya Palace. Nothing premium was included. After a few days we found out Patron joven and reposado were hidden from everybody although they were included. So you need to ask for it. Buffets were average. Again, Maya Palace was much better. Restaurant were ok. The one that stood out was Kyoto, highly recommend. Best teppanyaki we've had.

Haven't been to this property in a number of years and decided to revisit with our grown children and young grandchildren. Did not disappoint! Had a great time with lots to do for the grandkids. It was also very restful, with beautiful grounds, great weather, and for most part of our trip, no sargassum at the beach. Unfortunately, there is no control of that. A la cartes were good, buffet was fine, could have had more variety and vegetables. Overall great time had by all and we will return.

Good value
Prices are reasonable and very affordable.,services are good but not exceptional. They lack fresh seafood, specifically fresh fish other than talapia. Stay in Palace vs other hotels in this multiple Barcelo hotel, and always use premium level. Otherwise you would not have access to all amenities. Staff is very attentive and always ready to help.

Family vacation
this was our third time at this complex and each time we explore and do different things within the complex. And each time we love it. While the complex is quite large it is relatively easy to get to everything. Beach is beautiful - love that there are sandy parts as well as great parts to snorkel and that you can easily swim with sea turtles off the palace beach. All staff are wonderful and attentive. Lots of entertainment. Gym facilities are great and the tennis courts and paddle ball courts are great to use. It is safe as our teenage children independently explored and loved the mall area and teen area in the evenings A wonderful relaxing holiday for our family! Would come back again!
