Sep 30, 20262nd Time Here and We Loved It!!
This is our second time staying at the Colonial and it was great! The rooms, pool etc are cleaning and well maintained. The staff is extremely friendly. The whole place is very kid friendly, we have a 2.5 year old. We did a boat ride with our soon, we took family photos through the hotel. Just all around another great trip!

9th visit to Barcelo Maya
9th visit to Grand Barcelo Maya since Covid. Booked tropical this time but was switched to Colonial at check in as the resort is very very quiet right now and tropical is going to be shut down for a week + it sounded like. Great weather all week and the sargassom was completely under control/cleaned on the beach. Snorkel everyday in front of the Palace and this trip saw a 4’ Nurse Shark, Eagle Rays and Sea Turtles like always but no 6’ Great Barracuda like my trip last May lol apparently there was a Bull Shark by the pier on Tuesday, happy I didn’t see that one lol Overall I love the Barcelo resort and go to this resort over and over specifically because of the great snorkeling on site and the amazing staff, was sad to see a lot laid off right now during the really slow season this trip. Ala Cartes were all great but again always the same menus (would be cool to switch it up once in a while or have more Tamahawk nights “type” specials at more than just Rodizio and Carribe), buffets were honestly definitely lacking this trip with the amount of options I’ve come to expect but given how few people were there it’s understandable. Thanks again to the amazing staff at the resort!! Special thank you to my Amigo German Lopez at the Tequila Lobby Bar!!!! 5* (best bartender at the resort hands down) Also the amazing Casino staff Alejandro Fabiola Eduardo Galo and more are so amazing and a huge reason I pick Barcelo but it was so sad to see that Augusto and Elena were recently moved to a different resort casino, I know the casino staff isn’t part of the Barcelo staff but Augusto and Elena were such a huge addition to the resort I think Barcelo should do everything possible to try get them back there instead of Bahia. They are the absolute best and were a huge huge asset to the resort!!! Thanks again for everything Barcelo see you again soon!!!!

Sep 20, 2026Worst customer service on reception, no manager helping almost 2 hrs and still no answer
Weve been clients for more than 25 years. We made a reservation, and somehow it got duplicated, we emailed they said they would hold the reservation (i have the email) and then to call the call center and cancel the duplicates, it was done. We arrive and they say they have 4 reservations (only made 3) and weve been waiting for almost hour for the manager to come. Even the reservation girl left. Blaming the call center, no manager has come on premium level.

Sep 17, 2026Sept. 8-14, 2026 at Barcelo Colonial
We stayed at the Colonial from Sept. 8-14, 2026 and we were there in May 2026, so this is our second time there this year. I have brought my wife there 4 times in the last two years since we got married but this is maybe my 15th time overall to Barcelo in 15 years Overall: The Colonial and Tropical buildings, rooms, restaurants, gardens, jungle area, food at Main Buffett and Santa Fe, Kyoto, are excellent. The gardens are lovely, covered walking most of the way, excellent service, and wonderful meals at the key restaurants we love going to. We visited the Santa Fe and Kyoto, as well as the Main Buffet and El Mariachi for lunch most days. Very good food and service with very minimal suggestions. Our room were immaculate with excellent daily cleaning service. Zero issues. The Colonial is a wonderful resort for couples and families. However, the only negative report is the same thing I have complained about for over 10 years and that was the noise level at the Tropical pool which extends 150+ yards away to the Colonial pool and beach areas. At the Tropical pool, management allows staff to use a large industrial-size speaker normally used at a sports event for extremely loud dance music and the staff scream in a microphone which carries everywhere. The decibel level is horrendous. Extremely loud, intrusive to all guests especially anyone just wishing to relax at the pool or beach, read, enjoy the ambiance, etc. We are at age 70 so we come to Barcelo to relax, not act like it's spring break. The noise level shatters all relaxation, and you cannot escape it unless you walk on the beach to the Adults Only area. Additionally, management allows guests to bring personal blue tooth type devices to the pool and on our last day at resort on Sept. 13th, I personally saw "4" blue tooth speakers blaring dance or disco type music so not only do we hear the Tropical pool music, but we hear many guests blasting other guests (in addition to hearing the very nice music at the boardwalk area and at the El Mariachi pool restaurant), so we heard 7 different speakers going with different music) I also saw a family proudly bring a large speaker on wheels and they rolled it through the Colonial pool area disrupting everyone and they did it again at the Jalisco building. where we stayed at 7 PM that night. I personally reported that to the front desk at Colonial but was told that there is no security onsite, but he was very empathetic to my issue and said he would report it to a supervisor in the morning. That did not help the issue, and it did not make me feel comfortable that there is NO security to depend on. My wife told me that when the family of the speaker on wheels checked in at the front desk, the staff should have insisted to the family that loud music would not be permitted with their speaker on wheels. My suggestion to Barcelo management is that you should Ban personal devices that disrupt the peacefulness of what Barcelo should be about. 40 years ago when I first visited the Cancun Hotel Zone, there was quiet music around the pool, and it was very classy. The loud music now is intrusive and is not entertainment. Overall, this is likely our last visit to Barcelo due to the above negative issues but hope that management fixes the problem. Barcelo is a wonderful resort, and we have enjoyed being there the past 15 years.
