Buyer beware - resort not five stars.
Visited with my partner and was excited to get back to the Mayan after many years away. We were excited to come to a boutique hotel nestled in nature. While we got this - the hotel is set in the midst of the mangroves, a cenote and two lagoons, nonetheless our overall experience has been highly disappointing. This resort, while it may have at one time been stunning, it has fallen into terrible disrepair and is suffering from extensive neglect. It is definitely not a five star resort. Upon arrival we were upgraded to a palafito room for free because we were travelling with Sunwing. Sunwing apparently owns the resort. We were excited as the description indicated a rooftop patio and a plunge pool in the room. When we arrived in the room, we quickly discovered that the plunge pool was a tub that didn’t work and the rooftop patio had a rope across the staircase because it has been condemned. Every rooftop patio of the palafito suites is similarly roped off. The coffee maker we had in the room didn’t work. Our room is about a kilometre from the front desk. One night we got home from dinner and the key didn’t work. We walked the kilometre to the desk to get new keys. When we finally got into the room, we found the air conditioner had leaked all over our bed. We had to wait for a repair person who fixed the air conditioner and then housekeeping to flip the mattress and replace the bedding. Sadly the duvet that was brought was not a king size and we had to make do that night with a duvet that was too small. From reading other reviews, we are not the only ones to have this happen. The pool and beach areas are very scenic but sadly poorly maintained. Two of the three entrances to the beach areas roped off and condemned. The railing that surrounds the deck is in poor condition and wobbles. It is an accident waiting to happen. All bathrooms in the pool area and there are three of them suffered from being unable to flush. All got backed up and in one case a cubicle door fell of and was not replaced for two days. The hot tub by the pool was inoperative and there was not one umbrella on the pool deck. If you are looking for shade, this is not the resort for you. People were pressed to find any shade they could, often huddling under towels to avoid the sun. The main dining room near the beach though I am sure was at one time beautiful is in need of repair and is looking tired. What I can say that is positive so the service staff were wonderful. The food was the best I have ever had at an all inclusive. The meals were varied and crafted with pride. The Mexican night was a highlight and not to be missed. The management staff needs to be replaced. Despite our concerns which gave way to complaints they were not responsive and they were unhelpful. I could not in good conscience recommend this resort to anyone. It’s a sad situation because the property has overwhelming potential!

Terrible service, but with nice food.
Pros: I would like to highlight that the food was exceptional—delicious and well-prepared. We were served restaurant-quality meals three times a day, expertly crafted by the chef. Five stars to the chef! The room was spacious, featuring a walk-in closet and a large bathroom. We had the unique opportunity to observe crocodiles in their natural habitat while feeling completely safe. Cons: The main reason I would hesitate to return to this resort is the limited availability of umbrellas at both the beach and pool areas—only five in total. This made it difficult to find adequate shade. The temperature in our room did not go below 25°C, making it uncomfortable for sleeping. Despite reporting the issue three times, and staff attempting to address it, there was no improvement. The lack of air circulation made the room uncomfortably warm. On the night of our arrival (Saturday), we realized we had forgotten a hairbrush. When we visited the shop in the lobby on Sunday, we found it closed for the day. A receptionist kindly asked if we needed assistance, and after explaining our situation, she assured us that a maid would provide a brush, as it was typically included in the room amenities. Unfortunately, we never received it. The following day (Monday), we checked the shop again, but they did not carry any brushes or combs. When we asked the concierge if a staff member could purchase one for us on their way to work, we were informed that employees do not leave the resort premises. No alternative solutions were offered, leaving us to resolve the issue ourselves by purchasing a brush from a neighboring resort. This experience made us wonder how the staff would handle a more urgent request, such as purchasing necessary medication.

Disappointed travellers - please read before you book here
Please read before considering booking a vacation here… This is a very disappointing review to write, as this resort is one of the most beautiful I have ever been to, with excellent food and lovely staff. The grounds are naturally beautiful and the quiet serene vibe can difficult to find at an all inclusive. The issues, however, have significantly impacted our vacation. While this resort has thousands of top reviews, pay attention to dates. I can tell you that most people we have talked to here, are extremely disappointed in the same things we are. Here are some of the top issues. The resort is falling apart and not being kept up or repaired. Of the 3 stair entries up from the beach, two are broken and closed off. Railings are broken and wobbly, the elevator is broken, the only shower by the pool did not work and the washrooms did not flush by the pool. These issues have been noted in other reviews from the past several months so they are ongoing issues that are not being fixed. Keep in mind, If you can’t use the bathroom by the pool, most rooms are a 2km round trip walk to your room and back. There are bikes you can use, the problem is that they are in terrible condition, ours broke half way to the lobby. Golf cart rides are available but they are infrequent with a long wait. There is zero shade at the pool. When I asked if we could have some umbrellas put out, I was told they had all been taken down to the beach. I was told they would bring some up ‘tomorrow’ but that never happened. There are four Bali style beds, one is broken, (pic included) providing no shade, and the others are reserved for members of the only guests. People are literally lying out by the pool with towels covering them for sun protection. Last night, when we were heading to bed, our room key broke, and we had to walk 1.5 km to the front desk to get a new key. When we got back, the roof was leaking from the air conditioner onto our bed. The linens and the mattress were completely soaked. They came promptly to fix the AC and change the linens but we had to make do with a duvet that was much too small. The coffee maker does not work in the room, and although I brought it to their attention two days ago, it has still not been fixed. A little thing, but the little things here are really adding up! We Talked to other guests whose AC was not working at all. When we checked in we were given an upgraded room, which was a lovely surprise, but the room we were upgraded to had a second floor sun deck that was broken and roped off so you could not use it. What this resort does well is the food. Every meal has been really good. The staff are wonderful. The view from the pool and the main restaurant are incredible. The grounds feel like you are walking through a mangrove forest. The vibe, as mentioned, is quiet And serene. Such a shame that this has all been negatively impacted by things that could be managed better. This halfway through our vacation and the food and serene vibe are what are holding us at two stars. Hopefully it won’t deteriorate to a one. I hope that the management of this resort turns things around to save this lovely spot, where good people work. Right now, I can’t see that it will be standing in a year. Think carefully before you book this resort.

Pleasant experience
Pleasant experience we had in this place, all surrounded by many trees and beautiful animals, we did not know a hotel like this. The beach is amazing and but we really enjoyed the spa, if you have the opportunity to take a massage I recommend the blue diamond, it is very complete and very relaxing. The whole hotel is very safe and clean, all the time we saw security staff which gave a lot of confidence.

Terrible
I feel obligated to write this review so someone else doesn’t waste their money. Pros- the staff was very pleasant and and friendly. Cons- where do I begin? Our room was the palafitos junior suite which was supposed to have a rooftop with a view. We never could find out bc the stairs were blocked off bc they were broken. I then looked and it seemed every unit was roped off. So no one had a rooftop as advertised. One day 2 we had a leak in our roof from the air conditioner that dripped on our bed. We called and they said they would come to fix it. More than two hours later they came and so our bed and pillows were soaked. When they came to fix it, they scraped all the paint into the bed and floor and didn’t clean anything up. The next day we woke up to no running water. No hot water and no cold water. When we made our way down to pool area we need to use restroom and every single toilet was backed up. I checked all of them. It seemed they had a plumbing issue and toilets didn’t flush for hours . The food was not good. I felt I was on survivor picking and choosing what won’t make me sick. The alcohol was worse. I tried everything. Nothing tasted like it should. I ordered a drink with Malibu. It was gross. It either was not Malibu, thinking they poured a bad off brand and put it in there as if it’s Malibu or maybe it tasted terrible bc they keep all the bottles of the alcohol in the hot sun all day long. Our best day was when we left the resort. Trust me, save your money and book another place.
