Lovely hotel and a good base to explore from

Bougainvillea is a great hotel in a very good location for exploring the island. The hotel is close to Oistins and St Lawrence Gap and all the great locations on the road to Bridgetown. Relaxation is the overwhelming feeling from the minute you step into the hotel, the decor, building, gardens, pool area and beach. The staff maintain this with their “can do” attitude and huge smiles. Everywhere was clean and well maintained and constantly tended to. We were pleasantly surprised at our room upgrade, more an apartment than a room spreading the depth of the building. We were on the top floor, 4th, no lift and it was a challenge at first but good for us! The view was incredible over the gardens, pool and beach with a balcony. The beach was quite and we could walk quite far alone the coast, the issue with seaweed is still apparent, but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment, and some beaches further up the west coast had no seaweed. Travelling from the U.K. is expensive and the general prices in Barbados are quite high, if you expect that, there is no issue and we were happy with cost of the hotel. There was some noise a few nights from nearby resorts but it didn’t bother us, in general the hotel was quiet. We would definitely return to Bougainvillea.

Mixed experience — lots of room for improvement

We had a mixed experience during our stay. The junior suite itself was a good size, the bathroom was spacious, the air conditioning worked very well, and all of the kitchen appliances were functioning. The cleaners were also fantastic — they were friendly, thorough and even washed our dishes, which was a lovely touch. Most of the staff were polite and helpful. Unfortunately, there were quite a few issues that affected our stay. The biggest disappointment was the pool and beach facilities. There were not enough beach towels, and they frequently ran out. Guests were also reserving sun loungers from as early as 6am, making it very difficult to find a lounger later in the day. There weren't enough loungers around the pool either, particularly around the children's pool. This was especially frustrating for families. There was also some inconsistency regarding children using the pool near the pool bar. We were told that children couldn't use this pool, but depending on which member of staff was working, the rules seemed to change. This was confusing and frustrating. The pool area itself lacked much atmosphere or a holiday vibe, and there was very little going on to create an enjoyable environment. At check-in, we were not properly informed about several important things, including where to get towels, the entertainment schedule, restaurant closures, the gym being closed for maintenance, or the spa being unavailable. We only found out about the restaurant closure because a note was left outside our room the night before. We were initially told the gym would only be closed for around three days, but it remained closed for the entire duration of our stay. As we had to pay to use a gym elsewhere, the hotel did provide $25 compensation towards this, which we appreciated. The Wi-Fi was another issue. It didn't reach the whole apartment and then stopped working altogether during our stay. Thankfully, the Wi-Fi was restored by around noon, so this was eventually resolved. The TV in the bedroom didn't work either. We requested a Fire Stick, but unfortunately that didn't work as well. The spa was also closed during our stay, and again, this wasn't communicated to us at check-in. However, the hotel did offer a complimentary spa treatment for both myself and my partner, which was a thoughtful gesture and something we appreciated. The evening entertainment was very limited and, in our opinion, didn't really reflect the fact that we were staying on a Caribbean island. The entertainment that was available ended on 29 August, with nothing further provided for the remainder of our stay. We would have liked to see more local culture, Caribbean music and entertainment throughout the holiday. The kitchen could also have been better equipped. Although the appliances themselves worked, we were only provided with four plates, four cups, four sets of utensils etc. We also needed basic items such as oven trays and a cheese grater, which weren't provided. Having a better-equipped kitchen would have made the self-catering facilities much more practical. One particular member of the bar staff — the bald barman — was also not particularly pleasant, which unfortunately stood out compared with the otherwise polite staff. Overall, there are some genuinely good aspects to the hotel, particularly the spacious junior suites, cleanliness, air conditioning and the excellent housekeeping team. We also appreciated the $25 compensation for the gym costs and the complimentary spa treatments, as these showed that the hotel was willing to acknowledge and make some effort to address the issues we experienced. However, the lack of communication, limited facilities and entertainment, pool/lounger situation, and several maintenance issues significantly affected our experience. With better organisation, clearer communication at check-in, improved pool and beach facilities, a properly equipped kitchen, and more Caribbean-focused entertainment, this hotel could provide a much better experience. If you want, I can make it more strongly worded and persuasive, while still keeping it fair and credible.

    Not a great stay

Overall staff were professional and helpful. They had initially placed me on the fourth floor, as there are no elevators in the hotel, I requested for a lower level room. They showed me a room on the second floor which I accepted. The rooms on the surface appeared clean. The TV in the room were old, limited channels with poor picture quality, it was a bit like going back in time. The beddings especially the bed cover was rough. On my last and check out day, I found cockroach in the room, I didnt expect this in a 4 star property and when I informed front desk upon check out, she only oh, sorry about that and that she would inform house keeping. I was glad that was my check out day as I detest cockroaches and would not have been able to sleep in that room. To cap it all, on same check out day, I noticed three clustered rashes on my arm that resemble bed bug bites. I have informed the hotel by email as I am not sure if they are bed bug bites or not, but I am taking action to ensure my home does not become infested. This has been overall a horrific experience and has left a bad taste; I have since read some reviews of this hotel and saw that someone had also complained about bedbugs with photos - so now, I am really worried that I have carried bugs home. Restaurant The restaurant food was just okay, I only eat fish anyway, though the breakfast i tried was not great and I didnt try it again. The restaurant however had a very limited menu and was expensive. I only ate there mostly dinner because I would have had to take a taxi elsewhere given the location of the hotel. Pool/bar/beach I visited in August, there was smelly seaweed on the beach so sadly could not enjoy the beach. I had to take transport to Carlise Bay/Savvy beach. The pool chairs were always occupied. Some of the umbrellas had bird poop on them and there was also bird poop around some parts of the pool seating area. It was unsightly. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

    Beautiful Resort With Great Staff

I booked this resort for my wedding anniversary. We’ve stayed at a few resorts together, and I have to admit, this one had the best view at an affordable price. The resort was clean, well-kept, and offered nice amenities, including a gym. I have no complaints about the staff—they were genuinely so kind, welcoming, and willing to answer any questions we had. Overall, we had a wonderful experience!
