  Very nice resort, the hotel and food.

  It was a nice hotel,. Food was perfect, a lot of variety. We were really surprised by gurgle with animals, such as coati.

  Everything exceeded our expectations. Excellent food, staff, beach...

  Last minute booking Catalonia Playa Maroma was chosen based on the reviews of staff and beach. We traded 8 days at a 5-star for 13 days at a 4-star. Everything exceeded our expectations. The beach was awesome. Only 2 days of sargassum (staff worked hard to clear it) and one red flag (lighting storm). There is a Lifeguard. The sand is soft and walkable and ocean warm. We upgraded to 'Privilege' and our section had plenty of chairs available under shady palm trees. No racing to reserve a seat. The staff were extraordinary. William at the door and Ana at reception made our late evening check in was easy. Every staff member we encountered made us feel special. (Thank you, Alfred and Victoria at the lobby bar, Mario at the Cafe, Kori at Buffet, Leopoldina our housekeeper, Gabriella, Carlos, Burnabe, Yaneria and all the staff at BLoved! + Christian and Hugo at the beach... We really enjoyed the Italian restaurant. The lasagne was so good, I ordered a second plate for desert. ;). If you drink alcohol, try the tiramisu martini! The buffet was wonderful. Perhaps one of the best I've ever experienced. Stations are spread out so it's not crowded. The breakfast buffet had the most colourful variety of fruit I've ever seen. Dinner had a do-it-yourself poke bowl with fresh tuna that was delicious every time. A special shout out to the chef and cooks at B-Loved. Their menu offers flavour bursts of joy in so many items. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, everything we tried was fantastic! The view and staff also make each experience extraordinary. The coffee shop offered a rotating roast of 3 different beans by a local roaster. Mario always remembered our order. He also helped us practise our basic Spanish. There is a lovely garden walk from the lobby/buffet to the pool/beach/ restaurants. (For those with mobility issues there are golf carts can be booked through the doorman or guest services. Yes, the property is a little dated, but super clean. Yes, it's hot in Mexico. Our room was well attended. Our housekeeper Leopoldina was awesome. We often had little decorations or towel animal art in addition to a clean room. Turn down service was a fun plus. We didn't go for the pool. But, yes, it's warm, a weird shape, filled with kids and not much shade. It does have a pool bar with great staff. The Beach is awesome, did I mention? Notes: if you are on the 2nd or 3rd floor you need to walk up walk up as there is no elevator. The air conditioning is noisy so bring earplugs. It's not easy to get change so come prepared with small money if you plan on tipping. They have an excellent recycling program. Bring your own refillable cup. They don't have plastic bottles, they provide limitless re-usable glass bottles in your room and water (& pop refill) stations around the pool and the buffet. Worth the Privilege upgrade to dine at B-Loved.

  Amazing experience

  First time at this this hotel but long time traveller to Mexico. Been here 3 days and every staff member has been amazing. Big shout out to Rafael and Anthony from Mamma Mia Italian and of course finally seeing our great friend Deyvi at this hotel. Will be sad to leave but enjoying every day here , I don’t get these bad reviews, if yr nice to staff and treat them with respect you get the same in return

  Not the best impression left!!

  So we are heading home tomorrow after spending the last 15 days and want to give my honest review as this was now are 3rd time at Catalonia playa maroma, We where here 2012 and 2017. Unfortunately unless there is some crazy cheap sale this will be our last time time, definitely not what it used to be. We came here to celebrate our 13th year anniversary and originally booked and paid for the Romance privilege room as we wanted the romantic dinner, couples massage and the spa circuit pool and at time of booking was also told by westjet vacation and the hotel that it was a accessible room. Fast forward to week before trip we find out it is not accessible room so they have to down grade us to superior privilege room which at time they tried to charge us for the short notice room change, instead of us refunding us some $ as we paid more for romance room. When we got to hotel we tried discussing with check in people and I brought documents proving i paid for more expensive room. Anyways we were ok with down graded room as long as we still got those extra perks, which they refused to honor, and past the blame to westjet, who westjet past the blame to hotel. Anyways we carried on r holidays, Room was spacious and easy for mobility scooter to get inland out of. Every bar, restaurant, and general worker staff, where very friendly and inviting. Entertainment team put on some great shows and but I found other than 2 of the ladies, I found they catered there mingling and conversation to Spanish and french guest mostly, maybe the language barrier but didn't seem as inviting. I was extremely disappointed in the lack of Mexican food at the buffet and that it was the pretty much the same food every day and no them days. Half way thru r trip we get called to front desk where they inform us we have to move rooms due to some construction and they had no more privilege room available so we once again get down graded to regular room and they reluctantly gave us a free 25min massage for are inconvenience. Since we have been moved we have had r room cleaned 1 time and have not had fridge restocked. 2017 it was our top resort 5 out 5, now id give it a 2 out of 5. Simply honoring our romantic dinner and massage would have made this anniversary trip 4 out of 5

  Beautiful location…but…

  Stayed here for 1 week. Arrived around 1:30p on Sunday. The lobby was beyond packed and HOT. Certainly not enough fans or wind circulation. The property, throughout, would benefit from cool misting fans. The check in line was LONG and took a very long time to check in. Was told my room wouldn’t be ready until 3:30p (3p is the check in time). If you can’t get rooms cleaned and turned over in time, make checkout earlier, like 11a. When I finally got my room # assigned, I went and it was 85 degrees inside…it was SO hot! I talked to a maintenance person and he said he had just done maintenance on it, to give it 3-4 hrs to cool off. At 8:30p, the temperature remained. I talked to 6 different people about the problem. Asked to be moved. Luckily, the room right next door was available. I switched rooms at 9:30p. Note -the other room never got cooler than 76 degrees. The buffet food was consistently good. Service was mostly good, kudos to Paolo who went above and beyond. Huge complaint…their method to reserve specialty restaurants is a failure! Over and over they told our party they couldn’t accommodate us, yet, NUMEROUS empty tables in the restaurants every night. The food was very good at Mamma Mia’s and Steakville. The food at Adela’s was very lacking, which is a shame…since this resort is in Mexico! The pool and surrounding area is INSANELY HOT. Could never spend time there, as the pool was never even cool enough to be refreshing. Playa Maroma is one of the best in the area. White sand, clear water, however, during our week there, the sargasso was overwhelming. Yes, the cleaning crew started the job of cleaning the beach every morning at 6a, but the water was saturated with it too. Not Catalonia’s fault. Went to one of the shows and it was VERY good, great talent, but 9:30p is late. I’d suggest an earlier start. ALSO…it’s not an enclosed theater and it was 110 degrees! It was awful! Again, cool misting fans would help cool things off. Disliked my experience so much, didn’t go to another show. The property itself was very clean and taken care of. Definitely has a wild/jungle feeling with all the wildlife! Alcohol is only served 11a to 11p, so that may deter some. Giovanni at the Palapa Bar was awesome and took care of us all week! Gracias! The burgers by the pool were AWFUL. Didn’t eat anything again by the pool Snack offerings. Aromes Cafe was wonderful! This property has the potential to be incredible, but definitely needs lots of improvements.
