  Major Refurbishments - Disappointed

  Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa last week in August 2026 - major refurbishments taking place! Rather disappointed with this resort. This is a three star resort at best! There is major refurbishment / construction happening at the resort and neither Dreams or Hyatt told us about the extent of the construction. That is wrong! All resorts should have to tell you up front if they have refurbishments taking place! The entire main side of the resort is closed. This includes the main pool with the swim up bar and the main lobby area. Upon arrival at 1:00 PM we checked in at what Dreams/Hyatt call the preferred area since the main lobby is closed. The check in was quick and efficient (then again the resort was rather empty). Their literature says check in is 3:00. We went to the World Market buffet to get something to eat. More on that later! Afterwards we walked around a little and then went back to the preferred lobby to see if our room was ready. We waited until 3:30 for our room. Not sure why it took so long. As I mentioned the resort was no where close to capacity. It was rather empty. We found out later other people waited until closer to 4:30 - 5:00 for their room check in. We had a swim out room. The room was ok but this was definitely an area that has not been refurbished yet. The AC did not work properly. It was tolerable. The deadbolt lock on the main door did not work. It was not aligned with the doorframe. There was the same alignment issue with the bathroom door. That door would never shut. The swim out pool area was small but adequate. The area around it was not very well maintained. It really needs to be cleaned up - cut the lawn, clean up debris, etc. The pool water was very warm. It is August but they should recycle the water to cool it. Since the main pool was closed the only pool open was the quiet pool in the preferred area. Everyone was able to use this pool. They had a makeshift bar setup for drinks and once in a while their 2 to 3 person entertainment team would show up for some water aerobics and some theme dancing. Rather boring and unimpressive. The water in the main pool was VERY WARM!!!! It was not enjoyable at all. We cooled off by getting under the showers used to wash off from the sand. That water was much cooler. The resort has a nice beach but everyone knows the sargassum issues. With that said, the beach was unusable and smelled. Now to the food - I mentioned the World Cafe is the buffet. Not much of a buffet. Its offerings were very limited. Breakfast was the worst. There were very few actual breakfast items out. Yes you could stand in line for eggs but there were no eggs already prepared and NO BREAKFAST meats anywhere to be seen. And no hash browns! Are you kidding me!?!? What a joke! We ate at the World Cafe one night for dinner. It was Italian night. Another joke! Their Italian night consisted of three pastas and three water downed sauces. No other real variety whatsoever. No Mexican food like quesadillas. No French fries - AT ALL! No chicken nuggets for the kids. They did have a lot of the stuff no one eats like the cheese and deli meats that look like they have been there all day. I can't believe the lack of variety! The World Cafe does have AC. That was a plus. The Italian à la carte restaurant was very good. I'd recommend that! The Mexican restaurant, which is el fresco, was poor. The food lacked taste and their tortilla chips were stale. The Seaside Grille was ok. The only seafood they had was fried shrimp but the service was great and the steak and ribs we had were good (not great). We did not eat at the Japanese show cooking restaurant. As for the desserts and pastries - PASS ON THEM ALL!!! No flavor at all! This has to be the worst dessert and pastries I have ever tried at a resort. The drinks and the bartenders saved the trip for us. We are not huge drinkers but we do like quality beverages. Raul made excellent mojitos! They did have entertainment at night. The silent party was fun and so was the acrobatic show. We have been to Mexico over 10 times needless to say we will not go back to the Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa. I feel so bad for the two groups that were just coming in for weddings. I spoke with a few people from the one group and they too were not told about the major refurbishments that are taking place. That alone should tell you not to go to this resort! Dreams ruined these weddings - in my opinion! I have not been to another Dreams so I can't say all Dreams are horrible. Is the Dreams Tulum just off because of the refurbishments? Because of the lack of people staying there? Either way, it is wrong! Hyatt should be ashamed to have their name associated with this resort!

  Resort Review I wanted to share an honest review of my recent stay. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the expectations or the price paid. I paid extra for the Preferred upgrade, expecting the additional privileges and benefits that were advertised. However, I did not receive the privileges I paid for, which was extremely disappointing and made the upgrade feel like a waste of money. There were also several cleanliness and maintenance concerns. On my first day, I discovered a roach crawling inside the refrigerator in my room. This is completely unacceptable for a resort of this level and immediately affected my comfort and overall impression of the property. I was also told that the resort would provide a birthday surprise during my stay. Unfortunately, nothing was ever delivered or provided. While I understand that complimentary birthday amenities may be subject to availability, I was specifically promised a surprise, so receiving absolutely nothing was disappointing—especially since this was a birthday trip. The pool situation was another major concern. There is only one pool, and it is not particularly disability-friendly. For a resort of this size, I expected more options and better accessibility for guests with mobility needs. The beach also had a strong smell resembling rotten eggs and sewage. I understand that this may be caused by environmental conditions outside the resort’s control, but it was still unpleasant and should be noted as part of the overall guest experience. The restaurant selection was also disappointing. The food options were limited and, in my opinion, not up to the standard I expected from an all-inclusive resort. We also could not get a reservation at the hibachi restaurant, which was presented as one of the nicer dining options. This was frustrating, especially because the restaurant reportedly accommodates only eight guests per night, making reservations extremely limited and difficult to obtain. Overall, there were simply too many disappointments during this stay: the Preferred upgrade not providing the expected privileges, the roach in the refrigerator, the missed birthday surprise, limited and inaccessible pool facilities, the unpleasant beach odor, and disappointing dining options. I believe resorts should be transparent about what guests are actually receiving when they pay for upgrades, and expectations should be managed honestly when special requests or birthday surprises are promised. While I recognize that some conditions, such as the beach odor, may be beyond the resort’s control, they still affected my stay. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I would not consider this resort worth the additional money I spent.

  Lovely family vacation resort

  Lovely classic resort with beautiful gardens and updated rooms. The food was delicious. Great entertainment team. Overall a really nice vacation.

  Such a lovely resort! Would definitely return!

  My family (which included my husband, two college-age children, and myself) had a lovely time at Dreams Tulum! This was our first all-inclusive experience at a resort. The place is beautiful and the staff are all so friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy being there! We had plenty of food options and just about everything we ate was delicious. We had booked two excursions during our trip and wished that we had allowed more time to enjoy the resort. None of us wanted to leave on the last day and we all agreed that we would definitely return here in the future if/when able! I will note that the sargassum was prevalent, however, it did not deter our stay one bit. I would like to return sometime when the water is clear. I would also go again in the summer, even with the sargassum, because there is still plenty to do around the resort. The construction didn't affect our time there at all. Granted, I think we may have been there after a big phase had been completed as we barely noticed any construction. One note: upon arrival, you'll be offered an opportunity to attend a 1-1/2 hour breakfast and after the breakfast, you'll get the option of three gifts. My family didn't catch my side-eye and scheduled out of politeness. When we walked away, I explained that was going to be like a timeshare spiel so we canceled the appointment as we knew we weren't going to be interested. (We don't currently have the ability to travel enough to justify that kind of purchase.)

  Disappointing Stay – Under Construction, Misrepresented, and Poor Service We booked an all-inclusive, adults-only double bed swim-out room, but our experience was far from what was advertised. Construction Issues: The swim-out rooms do not exist yet—they are still being built. There is currently no "adults-only" section because the hotel is undergoing heavy construction. Dining Limitations: Most of the advertised restaurants were closed due to renovations. Between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, there are zero open dining options or buffets; you are forced to go to your room and order room service. Pests & Wildlife: The mosquitoes were terrible, and coatis (Mexican raccoons) were everywhere—including inside the hallways and running through the Seaside Grill restaurant while we were trying to eat. Service & Entertainment: We felt we were treated poorly by staff because we were not Hispanic. Additionally, all entertainment was exclusively in Spanish, with no effort to cater to diverse cultures, except for the DJ at the club who occasionally varied the music. Avoid booking this resort until construction is fully complete and staff training is addressed.
