Dreams Tulum - The Good and the Ugly

If you are reading one of my reviews for the first time, they are lengthy but designed to give you enough information to hopefully answer some questions regarding this resort. Remember that these are MY views and I try to make it as general as possible and not specific to me alone as we are all different. I will not talk about the weather or other elements that were out of our host’s control. Food tastes will also be generic in nature as what I like may not be what you like. Introductory To me, it is important to know who is writing this review in order for you to give it the appropriate regard. For this year, we were a party of six couples all over 60 and we stayed for 14 days. The resort itself is widespread and if you have trouble walking, you may want to consider another resort or booking in advance for room that is very close to the beach and where the restaurants are. Most of us were in the five to seven minute range as far as walking to the beach and restaurants. Clarification, the beach and restaurants are near the water where the main entrance and lobby are quite a ways away. None of us had problems with the walk but I would advise you to bring whatever you want down to breakfast that you would need for your morning and afternoon stay with you so you don't have to make so many trips. Check in and Out Unlike other reviews I've read about this resort, check in was very easy for all of us and we were dispatched to our rooms quickly in order to allow us to begin our stay. Check out was just as easy. Rooms The rooms are spacious however they lack in places to put your clothes. Several of the women pointed out there are not a lot of standard coat hangers for their dresses. We all noted that at least some of our clothes had to remain in suitcases for the duration of the stay. Some of the rooms in this resort have been updated however none of the six rooms in our party were. That being said, the rooms were clean and were outfitted with most of the things that we needed. Shampoos, conditioners, body wash etc. were replenished when needed and we never went without. If you want extra cloths or anything else, it was a phone call away. Restaurants A list of the restaurants is available on the website. You do need to check to see which restaurants are open on given nights as sometimes they are closed. Even the buffet closes or only open at 1:00 for lunch. We found that the later in the evening we went, the harder it is to get in. Not all of us went to the same restaurants. As for food preferrence, this is a very personal thing and everybody has their own tastes. You will not starve here no matter your tastes. There is a large variety of food. I found the buffet was good and the menus were diverse in each restaurant. Staff and Tips The staff is a highlight here. Overall the restaurants, washrooms and common areas are very clean and are staffed by excellent servers. We found it easy to provide tips based on the service we received. Everyone has their own idea of what a tip amount should be. It is not necessary to tip for every drink but a couple of times a day is what most people gave with more at dinner and less at breakfast. Beach The beaches groomed every morning and all of the algae removed. Overall we were very impressed with the way this is done. Most of the lounge chairs are dated and need to be replaced. While they are not torn, they bow making it hard to get out of. If you read, try and get one of the lounge chairs that has a square back as it makes it easier to read and are more upright. The beach itself has soft sand and a very nice water access to the right hand side of the property which is outlined by the buoys.   Activities I'm really not an activity person however I was impressed by the amount of activities that went on at this resort (except for my final comments). We've been to many resorts and there was usually something going somewhere. Yoga, dance classes, Spanish lessons, live music etc. There was usually a volleyball game going on, bocce and bean bag game there for anyone that wants to play. Special shout out to Ruby for everything she did to make our holiday fun. The Bad Beach Chairs I thought that, over time, hotel chains would know enough to provide two chairs and shade per room. In this resort, chair wars are still practiced as there is not enough for everyone. Some people were forced to lie on towels on the sand where there was no shade. People continue to put towels on their chairs in early morning and let 2 hours go by for breakfast or you never see them. Some of the staff did remove towels and personal belongings after only half an hour but that practice was rare. Reality is, some people leave their chairs to participate in pool events, beach events etc. so that is expected by not a 8:00am. If there were enough chairs, this would not be an issue. There is a lot of room to add chairs and umbrellas on the beach as well as on the rest of the property. Lots of room for improvement. Increasing as our trip went on, most bars started to run out of specific liquors and staples like ginger ale, cream, bananas, etc. I find this totally unacceptable for a hotel of this size and seeing that they've been in business such a long time, you would think that this could be avoided. It is not as if the hotel doesn’t know who is coming at any given time. We were told supply chains were a problem. I feel bad for the front line staff who have to deal with dissatisfied customers. One afternoon in our second week, three quarters of the beach was taken up by a “special event”. Volleyball net taken down, people relocated to the sun, what a pain. We paid our money ane were forced to move. We found out later it was a wedding. There are lots of other places to stage a wedding here without putting people who paid good money, out. I felt bad for people who were only here for a week. Shame Hyatt. Poor planning. The Really Bad – Super Bowl Sunday As a sports fan, I knew that I would be here for Super bowl. I have been on trips before during Super Bowl week and other resorts had someplace had a place to watch the game. This resort did too but only one and at a price. If you wanted a nice seat to watch the game, it came at the cost of $140US per person. Yes there were special foods like wings etc. but in a resort where the food and booze is free, what the heck!! No other watch parties were planned. This resort does have a sports bar and although the game was on, the bar was unstaffed and only several chairs in a room that would seat 50 or more. People stood or sat on the floor. They asked for chairs but none showed up. The attached buffet was reduced in size with a fraction of what normally would be there. It was clear that the hotel was funneling people to the more expensive option. Sad for a Hyatt resort to put money over people.
