two to three hour trip from Liberia airport
It is a two to three hour car ride from the Liberia airport. But the resort was quiet. We stayed in the Premium section in an oceanview room. The room was very clean and the maid Andrea did a wonderful and thorough job every day. Beautiful sunsets everyday. They have a nice peer to watch them from with a bar on it. The buffet was ok. They had three specialty restaurants. The italian one was the best. The snack bar was terrible but the premium section has a beach/pool side grill with delicious burgers, sausages and chicken available daily. We went on two excursions that we booked from a vendor on the beach. One was a tour of monkeys, crocodiles, birds and butterflies with a visit to a souvenir shop. The other a a trip to Tortuga beach with lunch and an option to snorkel. The pool was clean and we never had difficulty getting lounge chairs under the trees with an ocean view close to the pool. The pool bar was great and Carlos was our favourite bartender. Entertainment was all in spanish. Atmosphere is very laid back but it was good value for the money. Good customer service and friendly staff. Overall a good vacation and nice resort. Just too far from the Airport.

Great value for a family
Booked a 2-night package for the 2 of us. Check in is 3 pm and you are just going to have to wait in line. But it moved pretty fast. Reception gave you a good overview and handed you your room keys and put your "bracelet" on. It allows you to get unlimited drinks at the bars and to do their breakfast/lunch/dinner buffets. The pool bar and nearby Pelicano bar both offered a limited selection of cocktails and beer. Not bad, but not top quality. The Palmares Bar (which doesn't open till 5:30) had an even smaller menu of cocktails, but they were premium, served in real glasses. But you had to sit and dink them there -- no wandering off. And you could not be dressed in swimsuits. The buffets were plentiful in terms of selections and quantity, but the food was not that great. No real seasoning, etc. And nothing exciting. Desserts were pitiful, not worth the calories. But you could get wine, beer, etc in the buffet dining room. If you booked for 2+ nights, you could eat at one of the premium "a la carte" dining rooms. However, we could not get a confirmed reservation. First night we showed up with the "reservation pending" notice on our mobile phones and they let us in. Turns out, according to the Customer Service representative (in the glass office near reception), there were NO reservations available for either of the 2 nights we were there. So much for "you can have 1 night at the premium restaurant." Just glad we were allowed to dine at Macarela because the food, wine and service was excellent. The pools are huge. The number of lounge chairs is adequate -- even heading out at 9:30 or 10 am we could find options. The SCREAMING entertainment was obnoxious. Prayed they would shut up and let us just enjoy the music. The beach here is not for beach activities or sunning. No chairs, umbrellas, etc. Fine for walking on just to get some exercise but that was it. The rooms are a bit tired, but the linens and towels were nice. Kitchens had full sets of dishes, electric skillet, etc -- as well as a refrigerator / freezer, microwave, etc. Can't figure out why since it is an ALL INCLUSIVE facility and your meals, etc are included. A/C worked great. The WiFi / Internet connection were totally unreliable. In/out, up then down. But the double paned windows made for a very quiet room. No outside noise whatsoever. Overall, a nice 3-day/2-night get away. But next time we would look in to their PREMIUM package which has upgraded rooms in a separate building with its own private pool -- and all meals were in "a la carte" restaurants. But if you are looking for a great value, the cheapest package is quite good, especially if you have kids.

Lovely Grounds, Mixed Experience
We recently stayed at this resort in Costa Rica with our children and had a very mixed experience. Cons / Issues: • Our first room had an extremely strong mold smell. It was overwhelming. When we complained, maintenance was sent, but all they did was spray Febreze, which did not resolve the issue. We explained that our son has health issues and that mold was not acceptable for him. Unfortunately, this did not seem to be taken seriously at first. It was only after my husband repeatedly stressed our son’s health concerns that we were finally moved to another room. • The second room still had a mold smell, though not as strong as the first. • This resort is not English-friendly. Very few staff members spoke English, which made communication extremely difficult. This became especially concerning when our son became very sick and had trouble breathing. We urgently needed help getting him to the hospital, but no one could understand us. It was a very scary and stressful situation for our family. • The rooms do not have balconies or mini fridges. Had this been made clearer on the resort’s website, I would not have booked this property, especially when traveling with young children. • There is not much to do around the resort unless you have a car. • The buffet food was not great, and it appeared that many items were reused from previous days. • While the entertainment itself was good, it was almost entirely in Spanish with no English explanation. We often left early because we couldn’t understand what was happening. Pros: • The resort grounds are beautiful and well maintained. • The pool was perfect for young children — shallow enough that they could stand easily, which made it much less stressful for parents. • The kids club was a highlight for our daughter. The staff member working there was wonderful and even took the time to do my daughter’s hair, which she loved. • The three reservation-only restaurants were excellent. The food was delicious, and the staff at each restaurant were wonderful and provided great service. overall: While the resort is beautiful and has some strong positives, our experience was significantly impacted by room issues, language barriers, and a lack of support during a medical emergency. This resort is better suited for Spanish-speaking guests.

Arrival and departure were horrendous
Arrival and departure were horrendous. Endless queues, overworked and unpleasant staff, they practically bleed you dry before you even leave – in short, very disappointed. The hotel itself is very beautiful, and the staff in the restaurants and bars are excellent.
