Great Locale Hotel -- Close to Everything
Review is from a Lifetime Diamond perspective and 3-night stay -- and let me 1st say to keep the reviews and recommendations coming as it was obvious to me the hotel staff is reading them; and making modifications. So appreciate the attention to detail -- for instance we had a Junior Suite (booked it -- was not upgraded) and to get there 1st time would not be easy (take elevator up -- walk a ways; take elevator down and walk a ways) the 1st time so the front desk staff actually walked us to our room. After that we had it all figured out......sort of. Given past reviews let me amplify a few things from past reviews to help people consider staying here: 1) The entire front is covered in scaffolding and will be for some time -- also there is work going on in the hotel that will continue for a while as well; 2) Umbrellas are offered but at a price of 3 pounds for 48-hours each (not sure why that is as the Conrad in London gave them away like candy at no charge); and 3) the a/c and the heating systems work ok to keep the room warm (it is indeed an old but nostalgic hotel) and our room had an additional two space heaters in it which helped. Why we stayed here and the reason for the rating: Location is amazing as could get to everything including places to eat/drink within a few minutes walk; access to train station is a 5-7 min platform to get to the train you need. Front desk staff was excellent and took care of all our needs including showing us to our room (truly a nice touch). Rooms were comfortable and met our temperature needs -- beds were a little hard and some of our pillows were like rocks so we did struggle getting a good night sleep. We did ask for more pillows but unfortunately they were same consistency as ones we had. Junior suite was a nice size (fur US folks consider space to be same as Hampton Inn and Suites "Junior Suite" level of space. Bathrooms accommodating and shower had good pressure and hot water which was appreciated; please note hair dryers do not have a plug in the bathroom so you have to figure out how to dry your hair outside of the bathroom. Overall we had a nice stay and would consider coming back given location and access to everything. Now one are for improvement I'd ask the staff to work on and that is the Breakfast Buffet -- and I saw this same challenge every day we were there so not a one time deal -- and that is service by the staff to refill drinks, clean tables and keep some items full on the buffet line. When one comes into the buffet they are shown a table and asked their drink choice -- which they promptly deliver. After that you have to chase down the staff to get another refill....as they never come back by. Also there were two tables with dirty dishes that never got taken away and we were there for close to an hour; and there was hardly anyone dining with us. Staff would walk around but nobody took the time to clean it...... I must give a shout out to the buffet kitchen crew as they worked hard to keep the hot items full -- but when it came to items that the wait staff was responsible for; many folks had to ask for items to be filled. So if management can adjust this area the htel will deliver across all areas one expects given price paid. Lovely hotel and once all the work is done -- will be a "go to" stay for experiencing all that is Edinburgh and the Royal Mile.

Thumbs up 👍
Great location. Stayed here with my partner for 3 nights. Breakfast good. Staff very helpful, friendly and made us feel welcome. The lady called Immaculate who looked after us in the Executive Lounge was very helpful. The Polish lady on reception kindly upgraded our room (we chatted about Gdansk!) Gentleman at breakfast (Scottish with a beard) we didn’t get his name but he managed to get me a caramel latte and he gave us a 50% off drinks voucher for the Ivy. Thank you for a lovely stay, we will be back.

Absolutely wonderful stay
We spent 2 weeks over Christmas here. We took day trips to various places, but the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton was our base. It was a wonderful place to stay. It is under construction; however, it did not bother us at all. The front desk people were wonderful! Shout out to Awa for helping me every day with various things. She went above and beyond to help. Then there was Yurii, we needed a pharmacy for forgotten medicine. He helped us so much, and I cannot thank him enough. Our room was taken care of every day. A few small things needed attention, and help was sent right up. Our room overlooked the Royal Mile, a perfect stay for not only Christmas but also our 50th wedding anniversary. We hope to return someday!

Ehh
First I’ll start with the pros-the renovated room was roomy, attractive and the location of the hotel was extremely convenient for walking around the shops and restaurants. The cons. There was considerable construction going on so we had to constantly maneuver around a lot of dust and construction debris etc. The front desk staff were not helpful to the point of being indifferent to guests when we walked in and out each time. My teenager even noticed it and for a teen to notice people being rude is really saying something. We had stayed at a lovely boutique hotel in London and we were expecting the same level of hospitality at this American brand but it didn’t happen at all. We were also expecting a greater commitment to recycling but I’m going to assume that might not be a priority for the Hilton brand or at least it wasn’t as evident as other hotels. They did have a sign saying they would not replace towels every day etc. but it was on the bottom shelf of the wash basin and we didn’t even see it until we dropped something on the floor and saw it hiding in the back. We already know to do that as it’s typically standard but you would assume a hotel committed to the environment would probably have its policy displayed more clearly. As I said in one of the pros, the hotel room was recently renovated and it is very attractive but a con is that it’s a beautiful historic building on the outside and the room interior really doesn’t give you any indication of where you’re staying. You could be in a room anywhere. It’s rather vanilla. It’s really a shame that the designer didn’t do anything to incorporate the amazing flavor and history of the building or Edinburgh into the design. So if you’re looking and you see the beautiful castle exterior of the building and assume that you’re getting that special experience in Edinburgh by staying at the Hilton , I’d look elsewhere. There are probably better places!
