Mexican resort
We travel to Mexico annually. This was our first trip to Ixtapa. The Holiday Inn was rated #2 in Ixtapa so we decided to give it a try. We had read the reviews so were prepared for possible issues. It was definitely a lower standard for an all inclusive than we typically travel to in other resort areas of Mexico. With that context we enjoyed our trip! The resort was not up to the cleanliness standards we are used to in Canada, but it wasn’t dirty either. The food and drink selection was basic in quality and taste. There was always something available that everyone in our group would eat. We got a very good rate to travel here so we expected lower quality. The Staff were very nice and friendly, we speak limited Spanish and the Staff spoke very little English, but we could usually understand each other. There were very few Foreigners at the hotel, there were lots of multi-generational Mexican families. The resort was close to capacity over the holidays, but we rarely dealt with lines the other patrons were polite. The beach was nice and ocean was warm. The pools were the perfect temperature. The weather was warm and the humidity was high. The shows and Mexican nights were enjoyable and typical of AI resorts. Ixtapa was a beautiful place to visit.

Only stay if fluent in Spanish
Do not stay at the Holiday Inn unless you are fluent in Spanish. Very few staff could speak even a bit of English. It is a hotel for Mexican families. During our stay there were approximately 10 Canadians out of over 1000 guests. The resort caters only to Mexicans. The food is almost entirely Mexican. It was filled with all families with lots of kids. By the end of the day, the swimming pools smelled of urine. The entertainment was entirely in Spanish with absolutely no English interpretation about what was going on. Juan Jose our Nexus tour operator provided by WestJet warned us about scammers and to not book with anyone else. Turned out he too, was a scammer - charged us 1200 pesos each for an excursion whereas if we had booked with Roger the tour operator located right in the Holiday Inn, he would’ve charged us 700 pesos for the exact same thing. Others at neighbouring resort were also charged 1300 pesos for the same excursion by Juan Jose. On a positive note it is a very clean property, beach was immaculate and well maintained. For being so full there were Ample beach chairs all in good condition. Air conditioning was good. Wi-Fi was excellent and strong even down the beach. Our room maid did a great job. Room was cleaned and fresh towels done promptly and daily. Each day she made us a unique animal towel arrangement. The food was all Mexican dishes. We had to always ask for a knife, butter, salt and pepper. The waiter service in the buffet restaurants was not very good. They preferred to chat amongst themselves rather than offer service. We did finally find a great waiter, Adolf that served drinks on the beach and he spoke excellent English. It seemed that only the Canadian guests left tips. The ocean has strong riptides and waves. Great for walking on the beach, but very dangerous to swim in. The driver on our excursion actually told us that when we went home, we needed to write a review, telling Canadians not to stay at this hotel, but to go to any of the other resorts nearby.

Do not believe the hype
Not at all what I expected. Others must have a very low bar for what they accept as “fantastic” hotel! The hotel is old and tired. Almost 60 years to be exact. They’ve managed to put some lipstick on it to make it appear new but it’s easy to see its age showing through. It smells like sewer there are line ups for everything from food to drinks to beach towels. It’s over crowded and I would never swim in the pool with all the kids. The good is the amazing beach and the staff. The staff go out of their way to assist.

Not my best Mexico experience
We came here based on the reviews. What we experienced was a disappointing. You could not get in the pool for all the kids The food was just okay. We decided to leave early. The manager was fantastic understanding. We had a sewer smell in our room The gym was right out of the 70’s and in the basement

family resort not for adults
location was great, rooms were good , very clean, comfy beds. good value. Resort food was catered to Mexicans only for all 3 meals. Only 1 restaurant open several times for lunch buffet and 2000 people trying to eat there. Manager mentioned they were only 80% full, but they should have had both buffets open. 2 days were in plaza for dinner. No other choice.A la carte restaurants menus were good. Swim up bar was located in the busiest part of the poolwhere they were doing sports activities. No adult/quiet pool.Kids were sitting on the stools at bar when we got a drink there.Check out wait line was 30 min. just to hand in our towel cards. But the sun was shining the whole time. Lots of restaurants near by across the road.
