  A Decent Property Undermined by Poor Policy and Lack of Leadership

  I rarely write reviews for mediocre experiences, but I feel I need to explain my rating. Context: I was a featured speaker at a national conference at this property, and I have an extensive hospitality background training hotel front desk and sales teams. I understand policy—and the challenges of implementing it. The resort is across PCH from the beach, not directly on it. The private walkway, bikes and beach amenities are delightful. The property is extremely spread out, yet there is surprisingly little directional signage to help conference guests FIND event spaces. Rooms are somewhat dated but clean; bathrooms show wear. My top sheet had obvious holes—something that simply should never have made it onto a guest bed. The coffee shop is great, and the restaurants/views are especially lovely in the evening. Valet and Bell Services were consistently exceptional: warm, attentive and professional. Banquet staff were friendly, housekeeping regularly greeted guests, and Bell Services delivered my luggage within THREE MINUTES. Impressive. At this brand level, though, I was surprised my suitcase was simply rolled in rather than placed on the luggage rack. Small detail, but luxury hospitality lives in small details. The industry’s staffing challenges also show here: limited room-service hours and breakfast beginning at 7 or possibly 8 a.m.—surprisingly late for a full-service resort serving business travelers. My biggest concern, however, was check-in. My conference producer, who was onsite, had already PAID for my room and secured it with her credit card. I presented my ID and credit card for incidentals. The card had my husband’s name printed on it. We share the same last name, I’m a legal signer, and I routinely travel with it. I was told I could not check in. I understand WHY this policy exists. Fraud is rampant. And I’m intentionally leaving the front desk agent’s name out because she was lovely. This was a leadership problem, not a frontline problem. Since my room was already paid for, I suggested placing it on “no post” and simply denying me charging privileges, an industry "hack". No. I finally asked: What exactly am I supposed to do—fly back to Portland? Sleep in the lobby? The agent consulted her manager. Given that I was a contracted conference speaker, my room was prepaid, the conference producer was onsite and this was one night, I expected some managerial discretion. Still no. Eventually my husband had to complete an emailed authorization form. Between leaving for sound check, returning, waiting in another line and then waiting while the authorization went back to a supervisor, this became the most inefficient and inhospitable hotel check-in I’ve experienced. Ironically, I was also told I could not use that card anywhere on property. That proved incorrect: I used it for food, beverages and purchases without issue—even BEFORE the authorization or check-in. To be clear: my objection is not primarily to the fraud-prevention policy. It is the lack of managerial discretion and how Hyatt implemented it. If you adopt a hard-line policy guests may not reasonably expect, communicate it BEFORE arrival—in confirmations, pre-arrival emails and check-in signage. Once the guest is standing in front of you, it’s too late to shock them. Hyatt should examine where necessary risk-management policies begin interfering with hospitality and guest experience. There were genuinely excellent employees here, which makes this especially disappointing. Based on the overall experience, I would neither stay at nor recommend this property again.

  Great resort

  Great resort, perfect location, nice amenities and very friendly staff. Doesn’t get much better than this! Short walk in to all the nice amenities in town for dinner and shopping. Had a great time.
