    Almost a perfect holiday

We spent a week there for the first week of june. Get the premium, its worth it. Bring stuff for the locals on the beach/maids, like toys, soap, deodorant, clothes, baby clothes and diapers, snacks and food, medicine like tylenol, sanitary products, etc. They will be so grateful and it makes a huge difference in their life. For tipping, we tipped our waiters every time at the beach grill, à la cartes, and sometimes in the bars. Also make sure to tip your guides and maids! Pros: the location is stunning, surrounded by nature. Birds singing everywhere. Mango trees. Fruits farms nearby. A short hike to see the resort from the top. Our room was beautiful, comfortable, clean. The lobby is also a nice place to chill and read in the evening. The resort was extremely quiet, older crowd, couples from 30 to 70 year old. Most have been coming for years. There are activities on site, but never too loud, and they are fun, especially the cuban dance party on the beach!! We saw the show friday night, it has amazing dancers, really really entertaining. The staff was very friendly, especially Yendri who does tons of activities there and enjoys connecting with the people, and Maeling in the lobby bar was super sweet, always making sure we enjoy our drinks. Food was very good for Cuba. Breakfast was especially good with omelettes, or eggs however you want them, fresh fruit, fresh delicious homemade bread, cheeses, juices, beans etc. Lunch and dinner were pretty much the same, lots of meat and seafood options to grill with condiments on the side. Fries at lunch. Also always a pasta bar. Fresh bread always, and real butter. Only thing that was rarely good was desserts/pastries. I’d say stick to the little cakes and ice cream. For lunch, we always ate at the beach grill El Ranchon to be next to the sea. I LOVED the fried fish, served with rice, beans, plantain and coleslaw. Like a cuban fish and chips, I still dream about it. My boyfriend liked the chicken sandwich and burger. We liked the à la carte restaurants too. Italian: We loved fried mozarella, carbonara, and the fish. Didn’t like the pannacotta (it was basically jello). Gourmet: We loved the fried vegetable starter, lobster starter, the steak (though we had it recooked), and the tuna steak. And the delicious brownie. Cuban: didn’t like the starter, nor the lobster, but my boyfriend liked his beef. Desserts were really good: caramel flan and vanilla cake. The drinks were not all good, I’d say stick to pina coladas and mojitos. And beer! They also do a good daquiri (frozen lemonade). The wine was surprisingly good too. I was a bit disappointed with the drinks, I thought I’d have more variety (like mango, pineapple, aperol, margarita, spicy stuff, amaretto, limoncello etc). I tried to ask for different drinks but sometimes the barmaids seemed bothered, or they really didn’t have much variety. For free activities, we did the guided walk & the hike (bring tip for locals, they will want to give you fruits to taste!), rum tasting, and catamaran with snorkeling (absolutely crazy!). I recommend them all. For a paid activity, we paid 75 US for a classic car driver (not a guide) to take us to Havana with the guy at the entry door (lobby desk is more expensive). We were disappointed with Havana unfortunately, it was extremely poor, crowded with starving locals begging for money every 50 meters, yes everywhere even in the nice touristy zone. Felt unsafe, and it was heartbreaking to say no. Take note that you NEED cash here, US or pesos, not Cad, and they dont take any credit card in the city or in the hotel. I wouldn’t recommend Havana without a group and a guide. Cons: the resort beach is not your typical perfect varadero beach, because of the corals. the sand is not the best to walk on, I wished I had water shoes, but you get nice snorkeling just meters away from the beach and the nature instead of city hotel vibes. As I said, I was a bit disappointed with the drinks variety. Also, if you’re vegetarian, it will be hard to find something to eat at lunch and dinner, other than pasta. Also, horrible wifi. Another con: on the weekend, they allowed locals with kids all over the beach. I get it, but we pay for adult only to avoid kids… Also, locals on the beach were coming to ask for stuff. We brought a suitcase full of things to hand out, which is super important if you come to Cuba. But, being constantly asked when we had nothing more to give was draining. Another thing: some groups of people at the pool were loudly playing THEIR OWN MUSIC on a SPEAKER. Yes on top of the music already playing. I asked the lobby to do something, they said they would, and they didn't… It really ruined the pool for us so we basically never went, only early in the morning.
