Requirements for Weddings in Costa Rica
Birth Certificates of both (Bride and Groom): Original and copy
Passport: Original and copy
Certificate of civil state: Single state certificate of the home country. Final divorce decree if either party is divorced, death certificate if either part is widowed. Only originals.
Two witnesses: They cannot be relatives. (If the bride and groom do not bring their own witnesses, the hotel can provide them)
Additional information: Occupation, addresses, nationalities, ages, of both, bride and groom and witnesses.
The bride and groom must be at the property at least 4 days prior to the wedding date, in order to finalize the necessary paper work.
Ceremony must be scheduled with officials at least one month in advance.

The experience we had was incredible. Shout out to Elvin and Rafael for the multiple daily shuttle rides! The Wet Bar is the best place to be. Andres, Oscar, and This labor are the most fun and engaging bartenders. I would come back to the resort just to hang out with them again. There are only two words to describe our experience: Pure Vida!

Oct 06, 2026Some great parts but with a few fatal flaw non starters
My gf and I just got back from a week staying here and...it was a mix. First off I'll say in general the staff themselves...drivers, desk ppl, maids, maintanance, bartenders, cooks, etc...were all solid. Friendly and competant. Also, if you even skim my reviews in general they are mostly super positive and appreciative 4-5 stars so it's not like I'm just some across the board, weak, easily offended, etc jerk of a guy... That said, and you'll see this mentioned ALOT if you do any sort of even skimming of the relevant facebook group or reviews etc but just to hammer it home again, because you really don't understand the severity of it and will think it's an exageration is the incline of the place. I'm young, workout alot, in great shape...but even for me it was ridiculous at alot of the little roads to get to and from our room and to other places around the resort. They initially put us at the very top and it rained the first night...it made the road so slick we had to take our shoes off and then ended up walking down the rough grass on the side of the road otherwise we would have fallen ont he road itself, likely getting a broken bone or three... which obviously would have ruined the vaca to say the least. There is no little path let alone stairs alongside these roads, which would have made a massive difference... It's rough grass with basically trip boobytraps of sprinkler heads hidden in said grass. Or thick bushes. You're constantly having to go off the the side into this mess to avoid getting run over by the constant golf cart buggies going around as basically everyone, fit/fat/old/young was using them to get anywhere due to the RIDICULOUS incline of everything. And no one seems to know of the existance of anything akin to anti skid material put into/on the roads themselves. Or around the pool for that matter. Anyways, due to our initial experience with the rain on the road at the peak of the incline making it too slick to be practical and downright dangerous...we asked for a different room further down, which we were thankfully granted the same night for a surprisingly small upcharge. That room itself was overall very nice...much more space with a separate bathroom/shower toilet/counterspace etc. One related note re bathrooms, and this is across the board for most if not all hotels/resorts/etc I've ever stayed at so I dunno why this is the theme, but the water pressure and design in the sink is insane. Both make it difficult to get anything done in a practical or hygenic way...it's like a fire hydrant was turned on and your just blasting water off your dirty hands all over the entire bathroom...disgusting. I'm 6'3 and my gf is a foot shorter, and it was not designed for either of us...or any other human I've ever seen...very bizarre. Shower pressure was nice and plenty of hot water though for what its worth. But the bed was obviously destroyed from years of obese ppl laying on them...absolutely horrible. Doubt they were ever even rotated once in their lifetime, which was way too long regardless. The worst thing though (was similar in our initial room as well) was the AC. It was a solid block of ice and making a horrible racket, the inside unit itself cracking and snapping all night waking us back up again and again...but also the unit itself u could hear even from behind closed doors on the other side of the walls. I never heard such a racket...no chance of good sleep. So we had the hvac guy come and for whatever reason we had to physically be in the room for this based on their policy wtf? So its ok for maids to haev randome full access with us not there (fine with me) but we have to sit in the room (with a busted AC) for hours wasting our vacation with the hvac guy vs being on the beach or by the pool or in town etc? Huh?! Made no sense whasoever. Kind of fixed it the first time to get us thru the night, but then just went to sh#$ again immediately, so we had to waste even more time at our room the next day vs doing what we want while the guy 'fixed it'. Ended up staying cool enough after that, but the unit outside was still going haywire noise wise, and the vent inside was freezing up again and making all sorts of those super load snapping/creaking sounds I could hear even thru headphones. The AC situation is more than enough reason (coupled with the back destroying bed)to never stay hear again...if you can't provide a decently quiet/cool/safe place to sleep/recover on vaca, it's a non starter as your just figthing being a tired, irritable zombie during the day. I came back way less rested and having more physical discomfort than I did before going on vaca which is obviously reversing the natural order. Another odd thing, not that this is a big deal as its far from the focus on vaca, but the tv's were oddly blurry...and 99% of the channels were in spanish and unable to be switched to english. On a good note, the buffet was pretty solid and that's actually a big deal and very appreciated as I know what goes into bulk food prep/catering. Things were hot/clean and while not a ton of variety, what they did have was pretty solid. I did want more red meat and less fish options personally. Their main steak house dine in option was closed for the week, which was our main preference so that wasn't cool, but the italian was good. Not sure who they're trying to fool calling their steaks filet though, but taste wise they were good. I usually never want to even go to the pool let alone spend any time there on vaca, I'm a beach guy...it seems weird to me to waste time at a pool when theres an actual ocean beach right there. But this was an excption. The pool itself was nice, they were circulating cooled water into it to keep it on the cooler side vs what would have been uncomfortably warm without it so that was nice and they left alot of trees and vegetation all around the border of it so the visual was actually really nice to just lounge and enjoy the local foliage and occasional critter (racoons and birds and we saw a couple monkeys as well) The nearby beach was pretty cool as well, open to the public too which I liked as there were more ppl having fun which made for a nicer atmosphere. There's a pretty strong surfer and nothing clear about the water but it was a nice temp and felt great swimming around and they have chairs up on the beach...no umbrellas but theres plenty of trees providing shade so that was nice. So, as mentioned at the beginning of what is definitely the longest review I've ever written...I can see why it has a lot of 4-5 stars, but for me, due to the reasons I went over...the fatal flaws re the room/sleep and the other issues....it's a 'never again' non starter and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else based on that. I feel a one star is the only thing that is going to get anyone's attention and possibly get them to fix their SH$!.

This is my second visit to this location. Last visit was about 12 years ago. Not much has changed. I have visited several resorts over the years in several locations: Check in: Terrible!!!! Alexa/Alexis is not helpful at all. She is mean and disrespectful. She pointed me to other desk to check in. That desk said "we dont fo that at this desk, she's just being like that". Not a great start! Eventually, a make employee got us checked in. He was ok but acted like we were bothering him by checking in. Our room wasn't ready. In fairness, we were early. Perfectly understandable. We were directed to the buffet. Food: The buffet was terrible the first day for lunch. So bad that we never ate lunch there again. The Italian and Asian restaurant was good. The snack restaurant by the pool was pretty good. The fried chicken was great. The buffet repeated the same food regularly. We could always find something to eat. Room: Our room was good. Room 2105, Deluxe Bay View. The room could use a little updating but it was fine. Shower got hot and stayed hot. Air conditioning worked well. The view was really good. The bed was comfortable. The grounds: Very pretty. Saw monkeys, iguanas , squirrels and birds. Lots of walking. If you have trouble getting around, you may not like this resort. They do have trolleys. We didn't use. The drivers were very nice. The pools: Both nice. Could use sone repairs on the Main Pool. Water was warm in both. Gym equipment: Old and outdated. The majority is outside by the party pool. It was cool to exercise outdoors. Beach: Our favorite! Loved the beach. Plenty of lounge chairs. Tide does get high. Lots of natural shade. Ocean floor was pretty smooth with a couple rocks here and there. The vendors do bother you. Usually, if you said no once, they wouldn't cone back that day. The beach is clean. No seaweed. The guys that operate the jet skies are idiots. They could care less if you are in the water, they will get close to you when they dont need to. Staff: Front Lobby staff are not great. Everyone else was. Waiters and waitresses were very nice. Towel hut employees were great. Bellboys were always helpful. Entertainment was very little. Not much of anything. This is a smaller resort. Overall we were pleased with the price we paid. If you want to know, message me. Restrooms by the Lobby are on the second floor due to renovations. For the price we paid, I would recommend.

We really liked to premium lounge and room!! Our room was over looking the ocean. The food on the buffet was okay. We wasn't expecting much to be honest. For this price range it's was great! We was unable to get into the steak house as it is only open on the weekend. Even with the "PREMIUM" package we was unable to get a reservation. The Italian and Japanese restaurants where exceptional, again for this price range!! There is only one brand of beer, even with the premium package. Which was pretty good. The beach is beautiful but very small. It is right next to a public beach which is crowded on the weekends. Premium room was amazing!! 2 sodas, 2 beers, and 2 waters in our fridge everyday. Room was so clean even after all the sand for the beach. So, clean that I gave the housekeeping lady 150.00 USD tip. All in all we would definitely stay again! Maybe next time we will stay at the resort allitle more. Its a beautiful place!!

Beautiful place very friendly staff and great food.
I would give the Occidental Payagaya a five star. I loved everything about this resort. Went for 7 days with friends and all had a great time. A lot of stairs but there are constant shuttles. If you are in your room just dial zero with your room number, if you are in the lobby request a shuttle from receptionist, pool with swim up bar just ask the bartender, main pool ask where you get the towels and trust me the shuttles come pretty quick and ALL the drivers are amazing don't be afraid a buck or two every once in awhile. The Al cart restaurant where fabulous. Five star food if you ask us. Once again drop a couple bucks. Yes even if you are all inclusive tips are very much appreciated. They never make you feel like you have to tip. We seen Howler monkeys at both pools and a lot of iguanas. Just leave them alone and you will be fine. If you need a massage go down to the beach and look for Gracy she is registered and does one heck of a full body massage for 35 usd. You won't be disappointed. Snack bar near main pool has a very good lunch. The only thing I can complain about is the bathrooms on the main floor are under renovations and sometimes a long wait on the second floor as only 1 stall but they are working on them. With that said a beautiful place with great food and all staff where spectacular. Had such a relaxing vacation and will be going back for sure.
