Disappointing "all-inclusive"
Ocean Riviera Paradise was unfortunately one of the more disappointing resorts we've experienced while in Mexico (10th time visiting). I will try to give a brief overview followed by specifics to different areas. One thing to keep in mind about the general location and setup of this property is that it occupies a long, narrow strip cut through the jungle north of Playa del Carmen. What does this mean? There is not a lot of beachfront, and you will be doing A LOT of walking. There is a shuttle that constantly goes from up by the lobby all the way down to the beach. However, it's isolated location means that if you want to actually go into downtown Playa del Carmen, you'll be spending money each time for a taxi or other ride source. When we checked in, we were told there was a free shuttle that went downtown, but all other staff we asked denied such thing existed. There is an Oxxo and 7/11 within a couple kilometer walk, but that's about it. Wish we had known: There are two different areas of Ocean Riviera we didn't have access to - El Beso (adults only area w/ own pool and snack place) and "Privilege" which is an upsell area with another separate pool and beach area. They also had more restaurant access. So despite spending a bunch of money on this "all-inclusive", you're actually quite limited to the areas you have access to. THIS WAS NOT CLEARLY ADVERTISED ON EXPEDIA OR DISCLOSED UPON CHECK-IN. There was A LOT of kids at this resort. Not that there's anything wrong with this, just keep it mind if you're an adult couple that for some reason chooses to come here. There will be toddlers having meltdowns, even at the "nicer" restaurants. There also is a sad little arcade that you still have to pay to play their games. Really talk about nickel and diming you.. Food: Overall pretty mediocre. The buffet had a decent variety but they struggled to keep food warm, even we went at the very start of service. Long lines form daily for the omelet station. Three of the restaurants require reservations, and the Japanese one requires you to go IN PERSON and wait in a line to make said reservation. Also, the fine print will tell you that you can only make one reservation every seven days at these restaurants - I'm sorry, what? This was one of the first signs of how non-inclusive this "all-inclusive" would ultimately end up. The food at the seaside restaurant was pretty good, and it definitely had the best views and ambiance. The little hamburger shack in the middle of the resort is definitely an afterthought with a sad menu. Also, there was so little guacamole at this resort (and the stuff that was available looked like it was from a grocery store) I often was unsure if I was actually in Mexico. Lastly, if you want any wine besides house wine, be prepared to pay significantly more. Service: Very hit or miss. Like a lot of all-inclusives, the service staff here appear understaffed. For example, in the main pool we hung out at, I only ever saw two servers. Though some days we got fairly consistent service, most days we went up to the bar ourselves. The lobby bar becomes the only place to get drinks for awhile after 6 pm, and so it becomes crazy busy. It can be hard to be acknowledged for quite sometime. The severs at the buffet are also spread pretty thin and basically only there to refill your water/wine. The reservation restaurants you would think they have better service, but didn't seem to be much different. Our waiter even spilled some soup (creating a slipping hazard in the main walkway) and we told him about it he just shook his head, and proceeded to walk through it and never clean it up. When a kid at a table next to us dropped his glass and it shattered, they just kicked the pieces under the table until a female employee with a dustpan came by, at least thirty minutes later. When we went to the hamburger place "Ocean Burger", the host and the waiter made it seem like were nothing but an inconvenience to them. One bright spot was housekeeping - our room was cleaned and tidied everyday and we really appreciated the animals made of towels on the bed. Room: We had the most basic room, it faced the pool and had a balcony. We didn't really have any complaints here, other than it's starting to get a little dated and the water sometimes took quite awhile to get warm. The water pressure was good in the shower. The bed was pretty comfortable and the A/C worked great. Chairs on the balcony were so uncomfortable I don't think they were designed by humans. Pools: Coldest I've ever been in. Granted, it was a little cooler than average when we were here, but the ocean felt significantly warmer! They also had sand on the bottom everywhere - love that nice gritty feeling on the feet. The cement floor by the pool can also be pretty rough and the pool itself has a rough texture - so much so that my girlfriend got a nice gash on her toe just stepping out.

A fantastic family week in paradise
Stayed as a family with an 3yr old and 6yr old for a week! It was the perfect spot for us. Pros - Very clean resort pools were well kept and grounds - The kids club activities/ nightly entertainment were fantastic - There was wildlife to see - Reservation bookings were easy there was a app to book three of them and the other ones were first come first serve only the one night we had to wait and it was 20 minutes - Beach had lots of sand area we weren’t able to explore the water really because it was red flag the whole time - there are several different pools it was easy to get a lounge chair each day - The resort map looks huge, but the resort in fact was very walkable Cons: - The buffet had a weird set up and often had long lines so you would want to avoid the prime eating times and go earlier in the morning for breakfast - I personally wish there were a couple more lunch options - It is listed as adult only as well. It is just a small section though I would say this resort is definitely more family friendly. If you’re looking for a romantic quiet spot, this would not be the resort for you - We had an issue with dampness in our room and it was freezing at night. I should have complained probably earlier in the week, but didn’t our clothes got damp but it was figured out pretty much on the last night that you just have to put the air conditioner up higher in the room to help avoid the humidity and damp feeling. We were in building number two. It may have just been that building. - upon check-in, we were charged $40 American for an environmental tax when we questioned it. They said it’s mandatory in that part of Mexico. If you are a family with younger kids looking for a resort that has it all this would be the place for you! The arcade, bowling, ice cream parlour, juice bar were all great additions.
