Not a bad hotel - just know what you’re getting.
This is an older hotel. It’s not bad just don’t expect too much. Admittedly we did not eat at the restaurant so I cannot comment on the food. The beach bar is okay. Nothing to write home about. The people are nice enough. It’s a little weird that they check your room before you are allowed to leave. The location is good. Really good restaurant across the street. We went to the bar at the Westin as they had a TV. It was clean and the room was spacious. Cleaning service was good. Pool is small. Not a bad place but I would not stay again just based upon my personal preferences.

Awesome
As a frequent visitor to Cozumel over the last 30+ years and a Platinum Lifetime Bonvoy member, I have to say I prefer Playa Azul over the Westin hands down. Maybe I am still mourning Sol Cabanas which stood where the Westin is now located. Anyway our recent Playa Azul stay was wonderful . Mexican warmth was in abundance. Breakfast was great. Service at breakfast and lunch was excellent. Maid service good and friendly. The price was reasonable(not $400/night). We can't wait to return.

Choose wisely
Let me preface this with we paid over $400 a night. While rooms are fine and staff is extremely nice this is most definitely not a 4.8+star venue. Towels are thread bare, bathrooms are outdated and rooms are less than Hilton Garden. It was fine and we enjoyed our stay but for the same price (had it been avail) would hands down stay at the neighboring Westin). I booked this trusting the TripAdvisor rating and it def was a let down. Staff is great. Breakfast is fine but not at more than $150-200 a night. They offer 2 fruits at breakfast, an omelet-bar and some other items. Wifi was almost no existent in our room (but ok in lobby and by beach). There is a dive shop On site.

Excellent choice with great staff, atmosphere and price!
We stayed here for a week in late October. We chose this location over the Westin (just next door) as the rooms were about half the price. As a long time Marriott patron, I figured we would pay to use the Westin's all-inclusive packages on certain days. We never did because Playa Azul had everything we needed. First off, the staff is amazing and extremely friendly. In particular, the bartenders on the beach bar, Kermit and Darwin were awesome. As far as the resort itself, I actually greatly preferred the set up to the Westin's. The rooms all have ocean views. We chose the biggest, the grand master suite, I think it was called. Very nice though the jacuzzi didn't really work out for us. Honestly, the rooms were just fine, especially since there is so much to do on the island that all we did was sleep and shower there! Totally worth paying half the price of the Westin! Overall, the place has a motif which felt very local, whereas the Westin felt a bit sterile... standing in the Westin lobby, I could have been anywhere in the world whereas at Playa Azul I had no doubt. I highly recommend this place... you will not be sorry if you book here over the much more expensive options.

Once again, a great visit!
Once again, I had the time of my life at Playa Azul. I visited once before several years ago with my son when he was about 14. Now he’s in college and I went alone. The first time I stayed in a jacuzzi suite. This time I got a very large king suite with a separate living area and a huge balcony. A lot for one person! I didn’t even use the living area at all. There is no elevator in the main area of the building but it didn’t bother me one bit. Breakfast in the morning is plentiful with different egg dishes each day. The service is impeccable. I’d wake up early, go to breakfast, snorkel a while, then have lunch usually at the beach bar with a margarita (or three). Then I’d take a nap and later go into town. Dinners were spent either across the street at one of the lobster restaurants or in the in house restaurant at Playa Azul. It’s a smaller hotel with a friendly and personable vibe. I met so many great people there - travelers and employees - and I can’t wait to return.
