We have just returned from Playabachata. Overall it has been a good holiday. Positives Checking went smoothly and checkout was effortless Overall the food has been very good. Good selection. Waiters on the whole were very attentive. Ala carte restaurants were very good. Quick service especially the Italain. Workers were always busy cleaning and making a clean and pleasant appearance. Rooms are pleasant but dated. We had good air conditioning and ceiling fan. Our chambermaids were exceptional. Beach bar was the best always smiling, friendly and working hard. We never waited. Enjoyed the bartender Rosa. Snack selection at the beach was very good. They had Nachos and cheese. hamburgers, hot dogs and various dishes. The waitress there was always working cleaning up with a smile. She appeared to like her job even though she had a lot to do. Pool was always cleaned and looked good until weekends. Lots of sun beds and chairs Loby bar only open at night but good friendly service. Negitives 24 hour bar had poor service even with tips. Slow service and when they did wait on you it seemed an effort. Weekends were unreal people everywhere. Pool was full of people drinking and never leaving the pool. Drinks and food all around the pool. As I said previously the rooms are dated. We had a problem with the toilets which we reported to the front desk. The guy on the desk lectured us on not flushing toilet paper. Toilet always flushed slow and stoped short of overflowing. They checked it. The next day before supper a tourist asked me if we had trouble with our bathtub being full of sewage. I went and checked and sure enough we had a bathtub full of sewage. The other fellow and I went to the front desk and he told the man on the desk. Who looked at him with disgust and said “what do you want me to do about it“ He finally changed him and waited on me. Very surly and rude. I asked to be moved also. I also stated I needed to be close to the front of the hotel as my wife has mobility problems and I needed a safe as there was no key on the key ring he gave me. He told me it was a different type of safe and there was no key. He appeared very upset and sent us to a room in the middle of the resort. Once there the toilet didn’t flush and the safe had a hole where the key went. I returned to him at the front desk. I wasupset as he lied to me. A women took over and got us another room even further away. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he said wait till the morning. He was very rude and disrespectful. The next day I talked to his supervisor who solved the situation of the room. My night and day was wastedspent packing and moving The man who changed us first was just too lazy to do the job. I have never had an experience like that in any hotel that I’ve ever been to.

Sep 12, 2026Affordable vacation. Good value for a price!
Our first-time visit to the Dominican Republic (2-9 September 2026).We paid 1070 CAD per person for 7 days from Toronto. So we knew that we go to 3.5 stars resort! We were looking to find affordable alternative to Cuba. After reading tons of mixed reviews we decide to go to Playabachata Puerto Plata. In general we enjoyed our vacation because we did not expect much/any luxury just wanted a basic level. The Maimon Bay beach is the best feature of Playabachata Hotel. Beach is huge and very long, there are always few empty chairs around even on weekends. No umbrellas, no palapas only trees. Best spots are taken around 8-8.30. MOKKA Cafetería (wonderful!), P'UP Pizza (basic), Il Gelato - Ice Cream( 10+ different flavors) just 5 min walking, 3 min walking to snack bar. Strong wind and waves usually start at 11.30-1.30 . Mornings are calm and good for swimming and snorkeling. For snorkeling we liked area near MOKKA Cafetería. Swimming pool was very small and overcrowd especially on weekends . Food in buffet was VERY GOOD : fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, pork, breads, cakes. Snack Bar was smaller and less selection than buffet. MOKKA Cafetería,P'UP Pizza , Il Gelato i mentioned already - most foods and drinks are free/included but some options are not like packed ice cream and fruit shakes. No complains about food at all-much better than Cuba. Weekends were crazy with hundreds of locals coming to resort so some waiting is expected. Service was very friendly but some workers just don't speak English. Evening shows were fine, some were better than others. We never use swimming pool when we have an ocean so no idea about daytime activities. Accommodation was very old and tired even Cuba's resorts were better. Good potential but somehow neglected. Air conditioners are only in rooms, not in buffet not in snack bar. Everything was very clean. We enjoyed our vacation and will be back one day to Playabachata or Senator (+150 CAD per person).

This was my first time in the Dominican Republic and it was my boyfriends first ever all inclusive vacation. The day we arrived at the hotel we received an email stating that this resort had ben demoted to 3.5 Stars. Already a red flag. The rooms are outdated the bathtub/shower is not the best. Its old, rusty, the water smells in the shower, sink, and toilet. The wifi was broken when we got there and when it was fixed it ONLY worked in the lobby. The staff were rude and NOT friendly at all, very dismissive and seemed to have an attitude especially since we are not fluent Spanish speakers. My boyfriend and I did NOT feel welcome. We were scammed by Starling to go over to the resort next door "Senator" for a free lunch and a tour to see which resort we liked better, as he said "to compare the two". It was actually them trying to sell us a timeshare for $30,000 USD and wasted 3 hours NOT "90 mins" of our day. There are also so many sellers on the beach who approach you every day trying to sell you something. There are birds flying on the food in the buffet area. The resort gets extremely over crowded on the weekends, so its usually hard to find a table in the buffet. There are also no amenities, like gym, tennis, pool/ping pong. There were also no real fun activities during the day with the entertainment which made our stay pretty boring. Overall our experience was not good. I would not recommend this resort nor will I ever be coming back. Very disappointed honestly.
