    Go with low expectations. Travel dates April 6 to 13 2024

    My 3rd Riu. I will start with the good points, the food was good and plentiful except Mangoes during mango season, never saw a mango anywhere so we asked a tour guide to stop on the side of the road so we could purchase our own and they were delicious!! Clean rooms, clean resort. Food and cleanliness are my requirements when I travel. The service was very poor, guests were getting their own cutlery, coffee, water at breakfast and lunch. The staff seemed to only be there to clear dishes. Occasionally we would get asked if we wanted water or drinks. I realize it was extremely hot (high 30’s to mid 40’s Celsius) however I would have accepted slow service to no service. Went to the pool bar at 5:50 for a drink and was told it was too late and all they were serving was beer. The Sports bar which is open 24 hours only had 1 person serving at all times and as this was a well air conditioned room it took forever to get a drink or coffee. Pool was not always clean, the rooms only had a key lock from the outside (no inside lock) rooms were dated which doesn’t bother me at all as I don’t spend much time there however I do like to lock my door from the inside before bed. Now, for the reason I gave this resort a 2 star….our flight from Toronto arrived after 8pm so to be as petty as the resort was, we lost 5 hours of room time, so to speak, and I noticed future Sunwing Saturday flights were late flights, which means late departure out of the resort. Easy solution in my mind is save a block of rooms for late flight guests to accommodate late departures. I have no idea why this is so difficult. We attempted to reserve late departure on the Riu App which stated $10/hr per person and a reply was received to go to front desk in the morning and it is now $12. Went to the front desk and we were prepared to pay the $10 per person per hour and rudely told NO, this weekend is very busy, my common sense went to the late flight arrivals from Toronto I was told our room was reserved for locals coming in. All week I heard from tour guides that the #1 source of income was outside tourists and this would have been great $$ opportunity and I even mentioned this was my 3rd time at the Riu chain and my travel partners 5th. He looked me straight in the eyes and he said sorry nothing I can do. I really don’t think it matters how loyal you are to this chain so I definitely will not make a point of trying to book a Riu for my next vacation. Riu, please don’t insult me with your generic email apologizing for this experience as it means absolutely nothing just like my loyalty. It doesn’t address anything, I’ve already left and you didn’t provide the service I paid for while I was there. Here are my thoughts-If you treated your staff better they would probably perform better because outside of the resort the people are all friendly and polite and pleasant.

    A bit dissapointed this time.

    Our second visit to this resort,a bit disappointed is not as good as last time or the others we been,they have less attenders all over the place,the first time we had servers waiting for you at the buffet and they kept coming asking to help,not any more.We will like to commend Sara,Aaron,Jean Pierre,they gave us the best service,keep up the good work guys.

    Hotel Theft of Multiple Rooms

    Costa Rica is such a beautiful country, and the people are very kind and friendly. It's unfortunate that the Management, staff of RIU Guanacaste do not represent their country, or company (RIU/ TIU) with same beauty and morals. Large group of almost 30 people, and more than one of the rooms had theft worth thousands of dollars. Hotel Management made me wait an hour before coming to speak to me, then did not take a proper statement, and got angry at me for accusing staff. I involved police and OIJ (Costa Rica version of FBI), followed up with RIU complaints when I returned home, who stopped responding when I requested to speak to a Supervisor, and offered nothing more than an apology for a bad experience. Isn't that a slap in the face for spending almost $100,000 at their resort. RIU does not uphold the responsibility to provide secure rooms to their guests.

    Pretty good

    For a solo trip, I felt this was a safe bet. I did not have any concerns for my safety. The resort is nice, food is pretty good. My big complaint is that it is loud! I like a good night life, but if you want to go to bed early, expect to hear the entertainment (which is not that great).

    Had a good time

    The hotel was ok for the most part. We had a good time. Came here with my husband. There were a lot of couples but majority of the guests seem to be older adults or families. If you're looking for a more trendy younger crowd I would suggest you go somewhere else. I would consider this a family resort. I found the resort activities to be boring. We went on excursions and when at the hotel we ate food and sat by the pool. Not much people using the beach. Sand os very hot. The food was really good. The everyday buffet and steakhouse was really good. A lot of options. Didn't really like the other restaurants (Italian, Asian, Caribbean) at the resort. The beds are firm and didnt like at first but became quite comfortable after a while. Overall had a good time but wouldn't come back. I would prefer a different crowd and something more relaxing. Staff were ok. Not overly polite, not rude. Nice resort for families.
