Jan 14, 2026First Trip to Madeira but definitely not our last. 4* hotel with 5* service.
Our first trip and it definitely won’t be our last to beautiful Madeira. We had a great week at this hotel. Really impressed from the moment we arrived. The staff were always friendly and attentive. Louisanna on reception was very helpful in answering any queries. We did need to request a change of room after our first night as the allocated room was directly aside the smoking bar area and being non smokers this was highly unpleasant. Louisanna spoke to the manager and then she showed us another room which turned out to be perfect. Rooms were very clean and the maid came quite early so leave the do not disturb sign on your door if you don’t want your room made up before 9am. The food was excellent and we didn’t not get fed up with the choices by the end of the week as we normally do. There was always a great choice of meat, fish, vegatarian and gluten free options. The staff in the restaurant were highly efficient in providing drinks and clearing the plates etc and on one occasion we had had the water poured and the wine delivered before we had fully sat down so Hugo was fab. Bar staff were brilliant, friendly and choice of drinks was more than adequate for our requirements. There is a free shuttle bus into Funchal which needs to be booked in advance. It is only 20 minutes bus ride from both Funchal and also from the airport so a great location. The entertainment is low key and designed for a quieter hotel such as this. This hotel is perfect if you wish to have a quiet relaxing holiday outside of the hustle and bustle of Funchal and has access to some good walks. Children are not catered for so would recommend somewhere else if you have children. It was wonderful to see Mimi the hotel cat who parades around her hotel. She is beautiful and so graceful. We will definitely be returning as this was absolutely perfect for us. Thank you everyone at Riu Madeira.

Outstanding Hotel
What a fantastic hotel that definitely makes a difference. The lay out of outstanding which also matches the team. This definitely a hotel to add to your list and not miss. It even has a lovely friendly hotel cat. Makes the hotel feel even more warm and welcoming.

A Christmas Cracker!
Just spent our first Christmas away from UK and it was a Cracker! A Most Beautiful Hotel decorated wonderfully for Christmas. The Hotel and our room was kept spotlessly clean. Unfortunately, the room towels are very thin and small. Food was delicious, hot and such a large variety. Always a place to sit. Then served water and wine by the very attentive waiters. Plenty of seating around hotel, even in entertainment area. We did miss having waiter service, pity, as they came round frequently collecting empties. Entertainment every night, some nights better than others. The Christmas Choir on Christmas eve was absolutley Wonderful. They really made our Holiday. We used their very useful free bus service, to and from Funchal. Had to catch a taxi back one night, as we wanted to see the Christmas lights, as the last free bus was 5.00pm. One outdoor pool was heated, but my wife was unable to use it as the shallowest part was 1.5m. Both pools are the same. So something to remember if you have children who cannot swim. Plenty of sun loungers with a lovely sea view. Drinks are OK, but not fantastic. Would have been nice to have cocktails handmade, not poured from machines. All in all, we had a lovely week in this Beautiful Hotel.

Lovely and high quality hotel
Everything was perfect in this hotel. I would come again. My loved one fainted during the trip. The care provided by the staff during the week was truly meaningful and genuine.

This was our second time at this hotel but the first over Christmas. We had a great time and was sad to leave. The staff were amazing and the cleanliness excellent. A couple of things which would make it even better would be to have better towels, more spicy foods at dinner such as an Indian night perhaps, and freshly made cocktails instead of pre mixed. But I wouldn’t hesitate to return! Even to see mimi the resident cat.
