The transformation of Riu Negril
RIu Negril is a 5* hotel l have visited at least 7 times! I went in June 2025 to the upgraded version… Rooms - beautiful BUT avoid the ground floor if you can’t handle bugs! Food - the breakfast was excellent traditional Jamaican food (I ate until my belly bus!) the Italian is 5* and offered the best Riu food ever! Main restaurant- Very very repetitive, lukewarm food so book the online options instead! Entertainment- phenomenal shows then full stop every evening! It has lost the special atmosphere and enjoyment for all as the staff are not as friendly due to the “stooch” people who are too posh to smile, say good morning or party) new clientele! Bring back the old staff like Spotlight from Tropical Bay and SpongeBob and see the place transform! Good Riu but a shadow of its former glory!

No AC, no good.
Hotel stay was going pretty well until all of the AC broke in most of the hotel during a heat wave. Even the staff was melting, I felt so sorry for them. The hotel did nothing to help and just kept saying it would be fixed soon but never did. Now after complaining they are offering a measly $157 Canadian. Not very good customer care. I don't think I will ever go back to a Riu again!

Great stay after the remodel
Love the new upgrades that have been done with the remodel. Our room was very comfortable. Staff is super friendly. Food was good. We did have a challenge getting reservations for the ala carte restaurants, but other than that our stay was wonderful.

THE STAFF MAKE IT SPECIAL
Okay, the first thing I want to talk about is the staff. Nothing is too much trouble. I want to give a BIG shoutout to AMELIA on the front desk. When we arrived on 24th September we were booked into Block 3. I have issues with walking so asked to be moved closer to the Reception area. Amelia could not have been more helpful! By 26th, we were in Block 1 - ground floor - which is what we requested. She told us to leave our packed cases in our old room, and sure enough they were in our new room, waiting for us. The food is plentiful and there is something for everyone. Be prepared for curried goat; cows foot and octopus along with the usual staples of All Inclusive. Island Cove or Pepe's for lunch. Wine on offer is really nice. There is a smoking area near the Plaza Bar (by all the restaurants) and the staff are happy to provide ashtrays. You can sit down with a coffee from the Sports Bar or an alcoholic drink and enjoy a smoke. The rooms are lovely. Huge shower! We had 2 double beds in our room. They are SUPER comfy and we loved the amount of space they provided. Now the real gem: The Caribbean Sea. Oh my word!!! As someone who suffers with vertigo, I have struggled to keep my balance in the sea on previous holidays. The waves swirling around my feet made me feel unsteady and so I avoided it. This place is so different. The sea is like a millpond most of the time. Not only did I venture 12 feet into the water ( a lot for me as I'm not a confident swimmer ) I also managed to swim a little. You will see Jamaicans walking up and down the beach offering inflateables; hats; jewellery and weed. Just say ' no thank you ' and they leave you alone. Be aware, the prices are over- inflated so don't get caught out and find yourself feeling obliged to buy. Kids would love this beach. It's safe and calm. Look out for the shoals of tiny, electrc blue fishes in the morning. They come quite close to you...it's lovely to see. Now for the kicker: The sun here is DEADLY. I got sunstroke from one morning without sunscreen. It was our first full day and it just slipped my mind. As I write, my chest is burning bright red and, whilst (thankfully) it isn't enough to ruin the holiday, it certainly hasn't helped. You will need a sunfactor 30 minimum here. Children will need factor 50. The heat is unbelievable. In the afternoon, the pool is like stepping into a bath at home! The sea is a bit cooler but not much! Last night we experienced a storm. My partner said the rain was hammering down at 1a.m. - I slept through it. Thursday night is Riu Party night. It's loud and colourful with plenty of music to dance the night away. Would I recommend it? Yes. But be aware: The hotel had issues with the air-con going down for 2 days during our stay. It didn't affect us, but some said it was unbearable. Oh, and be aware also that, in Jamaica, the coach drivers all drive like they're on speed. If you're of a nervous disposition, get a private transfer. Other than that, no complaints. Again, the staff here are awesome!! Please - tip a couple of dollars when you are served at the bar. At dinner we tipped 3 - 5 dollars The big one for me is the housekeeping staff. These ladies work tirelessly to provide a clean, comfortable place for you to enjoy your holiday. We leave $5 on the bed every single day. God knows they deserve it. Thank you to ALL the staff for an amazing holiday ❤️

Many pluses and a few negatives
Just returned from a 8 day stay at Riu Negril. Overall we had a very good stay. Beautiful calm water, beach before entry into the water is a bit sharp so I would recommend water shoes, however, the water was calm, warm and beautiful. Buffet was always well stocked with a tasty variety of food, fruits and juices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Steakhouse restaurant was very good and would highly recommend, the others , not so much. Diana, Anthony and Ingrid are awesome servers and the entertainment team is one of the most energetic group that I have ever encountered. For the few negatives that I would like to mention, bellboy services are limited and slow, you might end up taking care of your own luggage's, with no elevators and some distance from the lobby to buildings 3 and 4 this is an issue . Secondly, AC was out for 2 days and still out when we left. It would also help if there is a few more wash stations to get the sand off you feet after leaving the beach. No countertop in the bathroom, ladies need some space for make up lol . Please ensure that cooks wash their hands with soap, especially after handling raw meat, witnessed many instances when this was not done and not happy about this. Some tables in the dining room gives you a view of how the food is being cooked / grilled. Overall, we were happy with many aspects of the Resort but would love to see the issues mentioned above taken into consideration, food handling practices must be a priority.
