  Horrible Management Experience

  The resort itself is nice. The food quality was not up to my expectations. I had concerns about hot holding temps. The kicker to our trip was when security showed up at our door to tell us our music was too loud on our balcony. I’m 69 years old. I don’t like loud music. I have always been very cognizant of not “rocking the boat”. I felt like I was a child being reprimanded. The manager and security did not even offer to hear how loud the music was. They just took it for granted that our neighbors were right and we were wrong. After going to desk to issue our complaint, the supervisor Armando told us he’s doing his job. No apology. I was in tears. This is not how we intended to spend our anniversary. We will NEVER pay good money to go to a Riu again!! So disappointed. We go to bed early. The nights of the VERY LOUD party we just tried to ignore. (Because we are in a resort!) Too bad we couldn’t enjoy a quiet time on our balcony with some Kenny Chesney music.

  Birthday Get Away

  Just got back and wanted to share a review because I always find these groups helpful when planning trips. Overall, we had a really good stay. The resort is modern, clean, easy to navigate, and never felt overcrowded. There were definitely some misses with the food and entertainment, but there were also quite a few things we really enjoyed. ✈️ Arrival/Check-In USA Transfers was very easy and I would definitely use them again. Check-in at the resort was great. We paid to upgrade to Elite at check-in, and for us the upgrade was worth it, particularly for the beach area, room service breakfast and upgraded alcohol. 🏨 Room The room was modern and very clean. The bathtub in the middle of the room is…an interesting design choice. 😂 The room also gets VERY dark at night. Bring a small nightlight for the bathroom area unless you want to risk walking straight into the tub in the middle of the night. ☕ Breakfast/Coffee Elite room service breakfast was great and very convenient. The breakfast buffet was also excellent. I got an iced coffee every morning from the coffee bar, and the almond croissant was SO good. Definitely try it. 🍽️ Food Buffet: Honestly one of the biggest surprises of the trip. Both lunch and dinner were very good. Everything was clean and fresh with plenty of options. Steakhouse: Easily our worst meal. The salad came with no dressing, the lobster was dry, the creamed spinach was gross, and the lobster mac and cheese tasted like boxed mac and cheese. We actually left and went to the buffet. Krystal: Very good. Definitely one of our better specialty restaurant meals. La Casa Flores: Underwhelming for us. Elite Restaurant: Better than some of the specialty restaurants but still not great. Honestly, we usually preferred the buffet. 🏖️ Beach/Elite Area The beach was great and there was plenty of space. Staff will help set up your chairs and bring you an umbrella, which was really nice. The Elite beach-facing cabanas were PERFECT. The only problem is there are definitely not enough of them. In my opinion, they should turn that entire area into cabanas because almost nobody was using the regular Elite lounge chairs. 🍸 Drinks The upgraded alcohol selection that came with Elite was great and definitely added value to the upgrade for us. My husband drank Macallan 12 and I pretty much lived on Don Julio 70. 😂 One of my favorite little touches was the cocktail cart they set up in the lobby at night with a cocktail of the day. I had a smoked Old Fashioned one night that was fantastic. 🏈 Sports Bar They did have NFL games, but we couldn't get college football. So if you're a college football fan and there is a specific game you really want to see, I wouldn't assume you'll be able to watch it there. 🎭 Entertainment Nighttime entertainment was pretty basic. The performers are clearly working hard, but overall we found the shows pretty underwhelming. This isn't a resort I would choose specifically for nightlife or entertainment. 🛍️ Across the Street The mall across the street is very convenient, although most of it is higher-end designer stores. I did find a really cute birthday dress at H&M, though! ✈️ Airport/VIP Lounge Our flight ended up delayed more than three hours, so we tried the Mera VIP Lounge in Terminal 3. I would NOT pay extra specifically to use it. It was very underwhelming and definitely not worth it in my opinion. Overall: We enjoyed the resort and would consider returning. The biggest positives for us were the cleanliness, spacious feel, beach, Elite cabanas, upgraded alcohol, coffee bar, and surprisingly good buffet. The specialty restaurants were hit or miss, and the entertainment isn't anything special, but if you're looking for a relaxing adults-only vacation with a nice beach, good drinks, and a modern atmosphere, we had a very good experience.

  Disappointed — Not Worth the Price

  Overall, the service was okay, but the resort was overpriced for what we received. For the amount of money we paid, I expected a much better experience. The entertainment shows need more variety, and the buffet food was often bland. The only food experience that really stood out was the Latin seafood night. One of my biggest disappointments was being charged extra at checkout because my son vomited, which affected one towel and one washcloth. However, when I found dirty sheets with blood stains on them twice, I removed them from the bed and placed them in the bathtub because I was uncomfortable sleeping on them, not knowing whose blood it was. I understand that stains may remain after washing, but if guests are being charged for soiled items, the resort should also ensure that stained sheets are replaced rather than placed in another guest's room. This felt like a double standard. The checkout experience was also disappointing. My son had misplaced one of his Apple earbuds the day before, so I politely asked the front desk if they could check whether anyone had turned it in. The employee told me he needed to turn it on and see if it showed up on his device. I explained that the battery was dead, so we couldn't locate it that way, and simply asked if she could check lost and found. Instead of offering to help, she repeated that he needed to check his device. I understand that sometimes lost items cannot be recovered, but checking whether it had been turned in would have been a simple gesture of customer service. We left feeling dismissed and disappointed. We also experienced inconsistent service at one of the RIU parties. I asked a bartender for a Don Julio shot, and he told me they did not carry it. When I pointed out the bottle behind him, he said it was only available to guests wearing a black bracelet. I explained that we were Elite members, but he insisted that the bracelet had to be black. Later, my husband asked another bartender for the same shots and received them without any issue. Don Julio was also listed among the drink options. This seemed to be a problem with that particular bartender and a lack of communication or consistency among staff. I chose to avoid him for the rest of the evening. Overall, the experience was okay, and not every interaction was negative. However, the inconsistent service, lack of attention to customer concerns, bland food, and extra charges left us disappointed. For the price we paid, I expected a higher standard of cleanliness, better customer service, and a more enjoyable overall experience. Unfortunately, I don't feel the resort provided good value for the money.

  DAVID AT THE POOL AND BAR

  David at the poolside bar and the lounge was amazing! He was the best server and had the sweetest heart. He truly made my experience as well as my friends' experiences amazing! We looked forward to seeing him every day and he made our trip spectacular! Highly recommend saying hi to David at least once during the trip.

  Disappointed

  Our stay at RIU Palace Kukulcan was decent overall, but several parts of the experience fell short. The food at the specialty restaurants was very average. We ended up eating at the buffet most days because it offered more variety, though the food quality there was also just okay. The poolside drinks were poorly prepared, and the lobby bar was packed most nights with only one bartender working. The drinks often suffered as a result. Darwing was a welcome exception: he took good care of us after we had been disappointed with the drinks elsewhere. The bar staff could use more support, especially during the evening rush. Housekeeping also missed refilling the bathroom amenities several times. The biggest disappointment came at checkout. Around 11:30 a.m., we left our bags with the lobby staff and were told checkout was at noon and that we were on time. The front desk was crowded, so we went to lunch planning to return afterward. No one clearly explained that leaving after noon would result in a 300-peso late-checkout charge. When we returned, Axel, the manager, and Laura at the front desk told us we had to pay. They pointed to the reservation agreement, where the policy was in very small print, but did not consider that we had dropped off our bags before noon or that we had not been clearly informed. That interaction left us with a bad final impression. If the hotel enforces a strict checkout policy and charges guests for a short delay, the policy should be clearly communicated and applied with good customer service. Overall, the stay was acceptable, but the food, drinks, housekeeping, and checkout experience kept it from being a better one.
