Riu Palace Mexico is okay, but could improve
Liked the hotel, location, staff and variety of food options. But, my biggest pet peeve is that even though Mexico prohibits smoking in public places, incl. the beach, people smoke everywhere outside. I wish they would have clearly marked designated smoking sections, to cut down on confusion. One waiter was great in telling people to not smoke on patio in front of theater, but others couldn't care less.

Good hotel, great service
We have just returned from 11 nights at the Riu Palace Mexico. We had a fab holiday here two years ago, and thought we would go back for a second stay. Pleased to say we had another great holiday. Check in was smooth and we were shown to our room on the 2nd floor (room 2027). We emailed the hotel before our stay, asking for a quiet room, and the hotel kindly accommodated our request. The beds were comfortable, we prefer a firm mattress and these were great. Lots of storage and hangers. Iron and ironing board in the cupboard with a good safe. Coffee maker with supplies that were replenished daily. We took English tea bags and put these in the coffee pot to brew, worked a treat. We got fresh milk from the 24 hour snack bar to have with our tea and coffee, as we prefer this to the creamer that was in the coffee drinks pack. The drinks in the fridge were also replaced daily (pepsi, sprite, beer, soda and bottles of water and more). The room was cleaned daily and was spotless. Great shower with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The toilet cubicle is on the small side, but we had no problem. Air con was great, and a quiet ceiling fan was above the bed. Air con stayed on without the card in the slot which was great as it was 29/30° most days. The bars and restaurants are really good, lots of variety and branded alcohol which we definitely prefer. The wine was good too, with merlot, cab sav, Chardonnay and sauv blanc. The bar staff were very friendly and accommodating. Good cocktails in the main bar too. Entertainment was ok, had a good Abba tribute one evening. The beach is gorgeous, lots of sunbeds although we did find we had to get up to reserve a couple of beds by 9am, as it seemed the beach was busier than the pools. The ala carte restaurants are really good, we ate in all of them twice, as we prefer a served evening meal. No need to book, if they are busy they will give you a pager to let you know when your table is free, we had no problem with this. The hotel is so friendly and staff are great. A little dated but this did not detract from our enjoyment. The only criticism...some of the guests take the all inclusive drinks too far, and staff need to feel confident saying no to serving more drinks, and definitely consider if letting drunk and overly noisy large groups of guests into the ala carte restaurants is fair on the other diners. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and would definitely return.

Very Relaxing Vacation
We had a wonderful time at the RIU PALACE MEXICO in Playa del Carmen. We liked the feeling of relaxation and security we felt at the hotel. We just wanted to take it easy. The staff were very friendly. We really enjoyed the wonderful food, especially the Lobster Night! There was a person, Joaquin, manager in the restaurant section who was very professional and attentive to our needs, especially my husband with health issues. He was very thoughtful and made our stay very special. We really liked our rooms which were provided by Didier. Great staff!

BEST BEACH POSITION. !
Very nice hotel , positives first ….. Best beach , lovely gardens, immaculately cleaned everyday even the bins are polished, Fantastic staff ( if u tip or not as me, brits don’t do tipping nonsense) Food & drinks 5 stars all round, & specially restaurants at no extra cost & no separate booking req, U r able to use the 4 other RIU hotels that r in walking distance, ( except 4 eve dine) Negatives,,,,, Rooms could really do with an upgrade, but are very spacious, & very well cleaned .

Nice people, worn place and challenging food
We stayed at this resort 10-12 years ago and several other Rius and Riu Palaces. Please know it was very clean and the staff was lovely. German is the best pool bartender-very kind. Giving a 3 because it’s very rundown. I don’t know if it’s the economy, or this is transitioning to a regular Riu…but the room is very-very worn; the property doesn’t appear to have been invested in since our first visit. The main issue is was the food. Our one daughter (who can eat anything) threw up each night after dinner, my other daughter and I 3 of 4 nights, and none of us ever felt well (including husband). We ate a lot of saltines and were ready to come home. It is also now a very low key-place-not for 18-20’s. No sports bar, disco, evening pool. It’s for those that lay out, eat dinner, and go to bed, but the food will really impact your trip. (Lots of retirees). Expect 3*food and room with really nice staff and you’ll be ok. Personally, we won’t be back. I’m unsure if will do a Riu again and we’ve done 10+ in several locations; this is our first one since 2020. (Last 2 years Dreams-they aren’t my favorite for different reasons, but we never got sick. My husband and I are unsure where to go next. Seems like our past favorites or no longer hitting it).
