Family trip to Punta Cana
We booked a family vacation to this resort. Overall, a great trip. We found the resort lacking some maintenance. The teen club seemed non existent, and the 'arcade' was basically out of order because we couldn't but tokens. Mini golf lacking in equipment. Our butler, Kelvin, was fantastic. Johny at the lazy river bar made the best dirty Bananas/dirty monkey drinks. Victor made the best smoothees at the diamond club buffet. Restaurants were good, but inconsistent. We really enjoyed the steak house, but the same meal on different days seemed lacked the same visual appeal. The Italian restaurant was ok the first day, but entirely different the second day. Our room was nice, but was lacking in housekeeping as it relates to the 'kids' bed. It was not properly made when we checked in, and when housekeeping came later in the week it was back to the way it was on check in. No sheets to sleep under. Turn down service? There was nothing to turn down! The mini bar restocking left a bit to be desired. Our room key was intermittent for about 48 hours when it failed completely around 10 pm. Our butler was still working, so he was able to get security up to repair the door mechanism within the hour. The minibar seemed like it hadn't been restocked in 48 hours likely because of the door problems. We found most days the lazy river had tubes available, but bringing your own is not a bad idea as they did run out on occasion. The Royalton splash waterpark was fun, and was included in the diamond club. This was booked as a WestJet/sunwing vacation package. Private transfers to/from airport were somewhat disorganized, and seat selection on the WestJet flights were inconsistent due to changes to the cabin configuration. Premium economy seating was worthwhile if you can get it. Looking forward to a return trip to Punta Cana in the future. We really enjoyed the lazy river with the swim up bar. If we rebooked this resort, it would because of the lazy river, which is where we spent most of our time.

Great Resort!
We had a great time. The resort is beautiful. The diamond club experience was great especially the butler service and in particular Eduardo was beyond incredible. He made us feel like we were his only guest and walked us through any questions we had with ease and speed. Our only issues in the trip were with Nexus tours. The tours were very bad and didn’t feel safe. We booked the VIP buggy tour with private transfer. The transfer was late and we missed half the tour. When on the half we got to it was worse. Broken down cars and no gas or any safety measures. They just leave you on the trail to navigate back. Don’t book the tours, stay on resort and save your money.

Sub-Par Resort with Many Customer Service Issues
Arrival from the airport takes about 30 minutes. The hotel was welcoming upon arrival and provided us cocktails. Check in was extremely slow with long lines. The Front Desk Clerk (Y) pushed to sell us upgrade elite access. In addition to the room, the Front Desk charged a hidden $200 Security Fee which was not disclosed in the reservation. She said was required if we damaged the room. (interesting-since she had my card on file for the room payment.) She stated she would waive the fee if we paid the upgrade of $380 (which she knocked down to $280); however, is not an upgraded room only access to an elite lounge and pool area. The bait and switch and hard sale tactics for the upgrade and the hidden security fee make check in uncomfortable and onerous. As a top- level Marriott Elite, the upgrade should have been complimentary. Marriott Elite benefits were non-existent at this locale. I complained in writing in a chat about the $200 hidden fee, and no one did anything. (more on this later). We were taken to the room in a golf cart as is bit of a walk as the resort is enormous. The rooms are actually quite nice. The shower is extremely large with two shower heads. Lots of closet and drawer space also. Air conditioning worked perfectly considering the hot climate in Punta Cana. The room also had a porch leading to a swimming pool running the length of the building. The room also had a mini-bar stocked with waters, juice, sodas and beer (no alcohol such as rum or vodka). One of the sinks was stopped up and would not drain; however, they quickly repaired. The pool and beach areas are clean and ample. The beach has excellent security too. The Chill Bar in the main pool is excellent with perfectly made drinks and a great bar staff. All of the bars have excellent bartenders (such as Franklin and Angel) and great drinks for the all-inclusive resort. This is a plus for adults who like to imbibe. Food is hit and miss as follows: Oceanside Breakfast and Lunch Buffets: Really plenty and something for everyone. The breakfasts are packed and chaotic. Coffee is dreadful with the consistency of tar. Juices are thin and watery. Omelets perfectly made. Lunch has a variety of hot and cold dishes especially good was the roast pork. Hunter's Steakhouse: Nothing special. Steaks are tiny and tough and not cooked as requested. A corn soup so small we thought was a dip. Good wine list; however, you pay extra for wine. Onion rings really good! Zen: Best restaurant at the resort. The teppanyaki chefs entertaining and really can cook. The fried rice, the beef, chicken and shrimp-all excellent. Sushi only OK. I highly recommend. Score: A sports bar with American bar food. Service is extremely slow and the quality of the food marginal at best. Avoid this restaurant. Oceanside Dinner: Really great upscale Dominican dishes. The sancocho excellent as well as the Goat Stew. Salads are nice. All really very good. (they forgot our wine until we finished eating). The resort also has entertainment nightly. We went to a great Adele show and a Circus (acrobats). Also, aggressive sales employees followed and harassed me to go to a presentation for Marriott Vacations. Really aggressive bothersome behavior. I did not receive any elite benefits, but they were adamant they could sell me a vacation home or package. I chose not to attend. After spending 4 days fighting the Security Fee, I went to Guest Services on the last day. The Guest Services Director (E) refused to provide me with the email address or name of any of the General Managers (Cesar is one I suppose, but she would not provide me with any contact information). Check out was horrible. Only one person at the Front Desk, and he (D) was rude and surly and refused to provide me with a receipt for the Security Fee. (I finally did receive a refund after the Marriott Concierge (A) intervened). Due to major customer service issues and hidden fees and employee apathy, I do not recommend this resort and will not return. The property seems to cater to families with small children which is fine. Rooms are very expensive and really not worth the price.
