Beautiful Complex with "OK" Food & Lacking Service
I just returned from this property to attend a destination wedding and have stayed at several all-inclusive resorts in Cancun in past years. Our stay lasted 5 days and 4 nights. While the property is vast and offers many amenities, I was not overly impressed with the resort experience based on other resorts we have visited. The rooms were very nice and comfortable with all of the requirements. Our back balcony faced the forest and mangroves. While we were mostly in the room for sleeping and getting ready for dinner/dancing/fun, the room was very comfortable. The beds, pillows, and beddings were quite comfortable, and I was able to rest soundly. The television in the room took some fiddling with to get the movie channel language in English, but once we figured it out, it was a piece of cake. The towels were pretty scratchy and of low quality, but served their purpose. The buffet food was disappointing. While there was a variety of foods to choose from that reflected the culinary traditions around the world, the food lacked authentic spices. In addition, it would be nice if those dishes were grouped and labeled (e.g. Asian, Indian, Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican, American, etc.) for better identification. The food service in the Gourmet Marché (International Buffet) was not up to par. While everyone is incredibly kind, it took 10-15 minutes to get an unsweetened iced tea. Ice is definitely a commodity at this resort and it's difficult to get a decent amount of ice in any drink! The resort only carries Pepsi products, which was disappointing. Why can't they offer Coca-Cola products as well? It would also be nice if water and common drinks were self-service. We asked several people about the Grazie Italian Trattoria and most people said Italian restaurants in the US were much better, the food wasn't that tasty, but everyone we asked said the pizza was pretty good. There's a cute dessert and coffee bar called Scoops Gelato & Caffe Lounge, which iss convenient. It carries a complimentary selection of desserts, sandwiches, pastries and ice cream with fresh-brewed espressos and cappuccinos made to order. The walk-up/swim-up bar services were decent, given how crowded the resort was. Service by the pool was not bad, getting drinks was easy but food took a little longer. It took 45 minutes to get a quesadilla poolside when the pool area was barely populated. Poolside activities were fun throughout the day and into the evening hours with a water aerobics class, live music, a DJ, and karaoke night. There's a nightclub that opens at 11:00 PM and was quite fun, but not very big considering the size of the property. The Splash Safari water zone was well populated by kids and parents alike. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The area appeared to be well-planned and safe. There are food trucks around the pool areas and the Splash Safari has a It's incredibly hard to get a lounge chair poolside, as folks get up early to drop a towel on chairs to reserve them. We have been at other resorts where this practice is not permitted and is treated as a first-come/first-served situation. If people weren't in the chairs and there weren't personal artifacts on it, the towels were picked up by security/staff. Now THAT is a service I would be willing to pay a little more for: actually paying to reserve a chair daily! We only dined in two of the restaurants. Reservations are a must, even if you can make them ahead of your arrival! The Agave was Mexican Cuisine. The view is amazing near the pool with open-air dining. Again, the drinks were tasty, but the food was not great. Some of our items arrived lukewarm and had no seasoning/spices. It really didn't feel or taste like the "old world Spanish recipes" as advertised. The food was actually bland. My favorite restaurant was the Caribbean Grill. The ocean view was stunning even at nighttime, while the open air allowed mosquitoes into the restaurant but we were prepared with bug spray to keep them off of us. The grilled chicken and popcorn shrimp nachos were delicious. Others in our party had the coconut soup, which they claimed was quite tasty. Overall, I'm not sure I will choose to stay here again, based on my experiences at other all-inclusive resorts in Cancun.

Once was a great property now an aging shell.
We were here 8 years ago for a wedding and were generally impressed. On our visit in February 2025 we were VERY disappointed. We paid extra for Diamond Club which came with some additional restaurant options and a butler that should be able to help with Restaurant reservations. Regardless we were unable to get into the restaurants at decent times (between 6pm and 8pm). Property seemed understaffed, when we were able to get into restaurants the service was extremely slow (40 minutes to get a drink) while the restaurant itself was half empty. The drink selection was just bad. Nothing you wouldn't buy in a plastic jug, weak drinks across the board. Skip the Royalton and shame on Marriott for adding this dud to their partnership.

Fourth time visiting the resort and likely our last
CONTEXT: We have visited this Royalton resort every two years starting in 2020. We learned to paid for Diamond Club after our first visit, and also to ask for specific buildings (not even rooms!), and we know that (for some unknowable reason), check in is ALWAYS going to be a process. Patience is going to be required. 1-Star Experience Our "experience" started before we even left home. We pre-booked and prepaid for our vacation. We were charged a higher rate than what the confirmation stated (and we have the receipts to prove - this becomes important). Upon arrival, the hotel attempted to charge us for the stay (AGAIN), as they had no record of our previous (over)payment - later blamed on system migrations. This took over an hour on our arrival evening (after a six hour flight), including showing our actual credit card statement with the charges. Back and forth with the checkin team - us showing receipts and the resort team saying we needed to pay more. This took an additional hour plus the next day to "resolve". We were never recognized as repeat customers even though the concierge knew this prior to our arrival. The building request was in the notes and not honored nor did the checkin team recognized the existence of the request until after we just agreed to room provided. The lesson here is that a) you need to bring your paperwork and b) the Diamond Club check in desk staff does not seem to be equipped to solve any payment issues, nor do they evidence any care for their customers, so bring patience and tenacity. Upon checkout - we were again told we still owed money and luckily the supervisor remembered me from the previous check in "resolution" that and I had insisted that notes added to the file. So a normal 10 minute checkout process took 30+ minutes. 5-star Experience Several facets of the stay were lovely. In particular, the bartender at Chill Bar (in the pool), Roel, was a delight. He remembered us every day, our drink preferences, and was so warm and welcoming. At the restaurants, we had Dave, Jocelyn and Pedro as servers in multiple restaurants, and they were phenomenal. One of the nicest changes is the fact that (at least at the Diamond Club pool) there is staff that pays attention to when people "claim" chairs for hours without actually showing up, and they remove their towels, etc for people who are there. No 6 am scramble for poolside real estate!). This is new compared to prior visits. At the restaurants, the servers pay special attention to dietary needs and allergies. Notes: 1) if you make a dinner reservation, note that 8 pm reservations conflict with the evening's main entertainment event. 2) if you book anything other than an ocean view that means a view of the bog that is in the back of the hotel and it smells terrible. Like a sewage problem terrible. You will not be able to use the balcony. 3) Although "tips" are not required, we always bring lots of $1s and other cash because it is clearly appreciated. 4) Butlers that come with the Diamond Club are there to help but we never really use them much beyond making reservations and coordinating with housekeepers.
