    Incredible.

The service was absolutely incredible and the food was the best I’ve ever had at an all inclusive resort. The vibe was nice and relaxing with a bit of fun added in. We had a hiccup the first night with an issue in our room and staff went above and beyond to make it up to us including multiple complimentary items during our stay. We were celebrating an anniversary and birthday. We found our room with door hangers highlighting what we were celebrating and a bottle of champagne on ice in the room. One night we came back from being out to a hot bath drawn with rose pedals and more champagne and a card wishing us happy anniversary. Another time we came back to balloons and cake and a card wishing my husband a happy birthday. We received a complimentary bottle of wine at dinner and a complimentary cabana at the beach. It was amazing and would 100% recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area.

Beautiful resort with incredible snorkeling and exceptional staff

My husband and I stayed at Secrets Akumal for six days and had a wonderful experience. The resort is absolutely beautiful, with great pools, stunning sunrises, a lovely beach, and crystal-clear water. Snorkeling was a major highlight of our trip. We did a private snorkeling tour where we swam with sea turtles and other marine life — truly amazing and a must-do. Snorkeling right off the beach was also excellent and very convenient. The activities offered at the resort were fun and well run, giving us plenty to do throughout our stay. We especially enjoyed both pool experiences: the relaxing pool, which was perfect for a peaceful float or afternoon nap, and the party pool, where the energy and activities were lively and entertaining. The restaurants were somewhat hit or miss, but we found a few favorites that we happily returned to more than once. What truly sets Secrets Akumal apart is the staff. They are extraordinary — friendly, hardworking, and genuinely kind. No matter how busy they were, they always greeted us with a smile, walked us to our destination when needed, and happily shared insights about Mayan culture. It was mind-blowing how many staff members remembered our names and consistently made an effort to engage with us. A few honorable mentions: Max and Oscar — We loved the bike tour with them. They are passionate about educating visitors on Mayan culture and the importance of caring for the delicate ecosystem, and their enthusiasm is infectious. Antonio and Cynthia at the relaxing pool — wonderful and attentive. Alejandro — my unofficial history and nature teacher; incredibly passionate about Mayan culture and the environment. Didi — paddleboarding was a highlight. Even though it wasn't the best weather day, he and Alejandro made it worthwhile. Hugo — an all-around favorite; we loved seeing his smiling face. Geovani — the emcee for the tuna carving, which should not be missed. His presentation was excellent and professional, and the tuna was delicious. Be sure to try it later at Himitsu — the poke bowl was a favorite. Daniel at Himitsu — truly the best waiter: professional, enthusiastic, and always smiling. He even went out of his way to visit us another night when he wasn’t our server. Edmundo, Isabella, and Monserrat at Market Café — always welcoming and attentive. Sergio and his partner at Barracuda Bar — they took great care of us throughout our stay and made the best Ojo Rojos, tequila with sangrita, margaritas, and anything else we asked for. Guadalupe, Shumi (?), and Norma at the spa were amazing. I loved the water experience with Guadalupe, and my massage with Norma was absolutely divine — so relaxing I may have let out a few ronqueos! Tip: make a deal with the spa representative outside the Market Café for the best experience and price. I wish I had gotten the names of many more staff members who helped make our stay so delightful. The preferred club was convenient but not necessary really. We found it too cold to stick around inside so mostly we got morning lattes (regular coffee was warm not hot), or a drink to go. The PC snacks were sometimes good, sometimes meh. The preferred suite - we never used the outside plunge pool that requires filling so not sure it’s worth it. The mini bar was just water, sodas, juices and beer. There were a few things I would have liked that aren’t available, such as being able to take out a paddleboard or bicycle on our own rather than only through a guided tour. A birding tour would also have been a nice addition. That said, for beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, inviting pools, and a truly lovely environment, I highly recommend this resort.

A great hotel, but some improvements needed

This is definitely a wonderful hotel, and worth a visit, you won't find many things wrong. The food standard is excellent and the cleanliness of the entire facitilty is top notch. However, this is my third visit to Riviera Maya, and the third hotel we have stayed in, and I wouldn't return to this hotel for a variety of reasons. However some of my comments might seem really picky, but they were important not only to me but also our party, and as we'd paid so much for this holiday and extra for a swim-up, we were expecting big things from this hotel and to a great extent it delivered, and there's some really exceptional things, but there were also some things that were disapointing. The biggest of which is that men are forced to wear trousers in the al-a-cart restaurants , meaning you have to wear them whilst walking around in the evening and when sat at the table in the restaurant which I found to be most uncomfortable. Unless you wish to dine outside in the heat and with the biting insects, this is the only time you can wear dress shorts in those restaurants. It seems a ridiculous requirement and for me personally would mean I wouldn't return to this hotel, but I appreciate for some people it's not a problem. During the daytime, it can be very difficult to find sunbeds, because most guests get up early in the morning and reserve the best beds before then disappearing for breakfast/back to their room. There doesn't seem to be sufficient amount of sunbeds, umbrellas or tables for your drinks/books etc. On the beach there are no umbrellas unless you're a preferred guest which we are not. So you have to sustain the full sun if you want to use the beach sunbeds and then constantly pestered by locals selling goods or access to the turtles which is a very short swim off the beach but is restricted and made to pay $40 for the experience. There isn't a buffet restaurant in the evening meaning you're restricted to the al-a-cart. Some evenings the hotel would put on a special event like "Akumart" which is a Mexican evening in the public areas of the hotel, which was really, really nice, I liked this alot, however it wasn't on every night but the choice and variety of food was excellent and the entertainment was also really good when they put on these events. But the lack of an evening buffet, whilst different, we also found this to be restrictive. The swimming pools are really nice, they feel very clean and the service is excellent at all times. I really liked the concierge service outside our room and room service was amazing also. We had a swim up room. I wouldn't recommend paying for a swim up at this hotel. Firstly the swim-ups around building 9 are constantly in the shade, meaning the water feels much cooler, and as they get no sun there's not a lot of point using it during the day. I didn't see another guest in the swim up pool, probably because there's no where to lie down, no sunbeds on the patio or around the pool either. It's like the hotel want you to pay extra for the swim up pool but then don't want you to use it. I found it quite bizarre and very different to any other swim up in other hotels I've experienced. Some of the rooms are very noisy. When we were in our room on the ground floor, it was like a heard of elephants were living upstairs. Room service trollies, even people talking outside could all be clearly heard inside the room, so if you're looking for peace and quiet, its not always possible given the hotel is quite active late at night and early mornings from around 6-7am. However despite this review, I'd give the hotel a solid 8/10 but like I said I wouldn't go back unless there was an exceptional reason like a special offer etc. There's alot of great things about the hotel, the service is exceptional, cleanliness, food quality, entertainment are all brilliant, but some things put a slight

Very nice stay at Secrets Akumal

The resort was great, room was fantastic. Caution about the $200 resort credit. The Expedia listing is deceiving. There are limitations such as $10 off a full price wine bottle, $40 off regular priced spa service. Great buffet at the Market Cafe. Nice sit down places near the pool with ocean views (Seaside Grill and Oceana). Fine dining choices in the evening include Himitsu (Japanese), Bordeaux (French), Portofino (Italian) and El Patio (Mexican). All of the restaurants were fantastic & no resy needed. (Hibachi at Himitsu needs a resy due to limited seating). There are plenty of events during the day that are free. We decided to just hang out at the pool most of the time. The concierges are stationed at every building, and they communicate through WhatsApp if you need anything. The staff does go out of their way to make sure that you are taken care of. The reason I did not rate it 5 is because I did not sleep well at night due to the bed and pillows. It was just not comfortable for me. I still prefer the beds and pillows at a JW Marriott. The resort grounds are immaculate! The pools are sparkling clean. The beaches are pristine, smooth white sand that feels like flour on your feet. They have exercise classes, free paddle boarding & kayaking outings and bike ride through the local town. If U take the Wyndham "timeshare" pres, it's about 2hours for $200 credit towards your hotel bill. The survey lady was rude. Sales guys had stinky breath. Just keep saying No until they give you all the bells/whistles. I don't like sneaky sales tactics. Just tell me all options and show me your best hand, so play around like some mating dance.
