Short of Luxury and Marred by Hard Sells and a Crowded Beach
We were honestly scratching our heads as to how this resort obtained and/or maintains its "Best of the Best" awards. While there were certainly highlights—specifically the world-class dining and a smart WhatsApp-based concierge service—the overall experience felt significantly less than "Unlimited-Luxury" and felt more like a 3-star resort in several key areas. The Highlights: • Dining: The food is exceptional. From the high-end restaurants to the room service, the quality was consistently impressive (aside from a slight dip immediately following the holiday). The fresh-baked goods at the Coco Café and the Club lounge were some of the best we have had at any all-inclusive. A word of caution: While the fresh juices and cocktails with fruit were delicious, they unfortunately caused a bout of "the runs," so be mindful. • Concierge: The WhatsApp-based concierge service is world-class. Being able to coordinate pool floats or spa appointments via message is a high-end, non-invasive touch that other resorts should emulate. • A/C: Unlike other resorts in the area, the air conditioning here is powerful and consistent 24/7. The Lowlights: • Mechanical Check-in: The arrival experience was a major letdown. Even when booking at the Club level or the highest room category, the check-in process felt mechanical, cold, and frustratingly slow. It lacked the warmth or "special" feeling you expect when paying for a premium tier. • The Beach & Crowds: If you are looking for a private, adults-only sanctuary, keep looking. Because the beach is a public-access marine park, it is small, claustrophobic, and overrun with outside tour groups, tourists from other resorts and persistent vendors. You are constantly surrounded by crowds that break the exclusivity you expect at this price point. It felt more like a busy public park than a high-end resort. • The "Hard Sell" Culture: The most frustrating part of the stay was the inability to simply relax. From the moment you check in, you are targeted for Hyatt Travel Club presentations, and this "hard sell" follows you to the pool and beach. We were frequently interrupted by invasive spa staff and "concierges" pushing paid services. It felt incredibly "low-rent" and predatory and made it difficult to truly unwind. • Questionable Entertainment & Tacky “Cosplay”: The vibe here often leans more toward "Spring Break" than sophisticated luxury. A specific point of contention was the "First Aid" animation team; seeing staff roaming the pool cosplaying as "risque adult nurses" to encourage alcohol shots and provocative games was disappointing. The main pool and evening shows, some of which leaned toward raunchy, felt totally out of sync with a premium, high-end brand. • Room Quality & Comfort: While the rooms are aesthetically pleasing with wood and stone, the "soft goods" are a massive letdown. The bedding, linens, and towels were extremely poor quality—thin, scratchy, and more comparable to a 3-star budget hotel than a luxury suite. • The Crowded Reality: The resort feels perpetually crowded. To get a lounge chair by the pool or a decent spot on the beach, you have to play the "towel game" early in the morning. It’s a frustrating and unrefined way to spend a vacation. In summary, go for the food and the turtles but be prepared for nice rooms that are let down by poor linens, an overcrowded beach scene, and constant sales pitches. If you want true tranquility and high-end comfort, there are better options in the Riviera Maya.

Fantastic time At Secrets Akumal
We are just home from a fantastic stay at Secrets Akumal. Our room was lovely - very spacious and comfortable. We were in a tropical room and were pleased to be on the top floor looking over the tree tops. The staff were amazing! Very friendly and worked hard to give you a great experience whether it was drinks by the pool, service in restaurants or keeping your room clean and today. The guys cleaning the seaweed from the beach had a hard job keeping up with the daily dumping but they persevered. A few special mentions- Annie, our concierge was a delight. Always smiling and willing to help with requests and reservations. Around the pool Jesus, Antonio and Issac looked after us very well with finding sun beds, towels and drinks. We enjoyed the different pools and beach depending on whether we wanted sun / shade or peace and quiet. The staff running the activities were full of energy and worked hard all day. Having a choice of different restaurants in the evening was great. We enjoyed all our meals from the Market Cafe at breakfast to the speciality restaurants at dinner. We all loved all the nature around the resort. We would definitely consider a return visit in the future.

The perfect get away, just what we needed...
The perfect get away, friendly accommodating staff, good food and drink, three pools, wonderful beach, it had it all. You could escape to the quiet pool or party all day at the main pool and enjoy the beach. We will definitely go back!
