Quiet resort with gorgeous views and wonderful staff be

Secrets Huatulco is a great resort for a couples vacation. It is a short ride from the airport and every room has a gorgeous ocean view. We loved our room and balcony view. Our room was cool, comfortable and very clean. The restaurants were good. We especially liked the Bordeaux (French) restaurant and Spice (Asian). We really enjoyed the lunch options at the pool at the Barefoot Grill. A few afternoons featured made to order wood fired pizzas and twice they made a large paella which was fabulous. We had excellent service from our pool waiters. Ronaldo and Julio both were attentive and friendly and polite servers. We enjoyed getting to know them and really appreciated their attentive service. I attended many water yoga classes. Special mention to our instructor Ximena! She lead the classes professionally and was so warm and welcoming to everyone. She is an amazing teacher, patient, fun and helpful and most of all, incredibly positive and made sure everyone was having a good experience. Thank you Ximena! There are a few areas of the resort that are starting to show their age, and some general repair and maintenance would go a long way to making the public areas more attractive. The sports bar was very disappointing - not enough chairs, dingy atmosphere and it smelled bad. The sports bar drinks are served in very stained and scratched plastic drinkware. We would have loved to spend more time there but it was not a comfortable or inviting space. Overall we had a very good time at Secrets due to the great staff, good food and beautiful location.

    Great Timing!

I picked a great 2 weeks to leave Chicago for Secrets in Huatulco. Weather is between 86-88 everyday without a cloud in the sky. Hotel service has been great from the moment we arrived and my room is great and kept extremely clean by Doris. We have taken advantage of some of the newer offerings for dining and were pleasantly surprised with the Italian Trattoria Night outside by the pool. From the ambience created by Alan and his staff including Italian music, wine and decorations, to the menu which was outstanding and done to perfection! Nothing better than to enjoy a great meal outside in fantastic comfortable weather when it’s below zero and snowing back home. As always, Nemorio is the best along with Gloria and Chef Angel! My 2 weeks is coming to a close but being here will get me through the rest of the winter! Rich Bruno

    The Good and the Bad

This is about my 35th review of Caribbean and Mexican resorts. Tripadvisor wiped out my history. It’s important for reviewers to know that. Outstanding: My daughter was celebrating her 35 birthday and we chose the beautiful outdoor restaurant The Oceana for dinner. My husband and I got there a bit early to ask the hostess if they could perhaps stick a candle into a dessert. She went and got the Manager David, and I asked if they could find a candle, no big deal if they couldn’t. David was actually truly thrilled at the thought of a birthday dinner. He made a wonderful production of it from start to finish. Our server, also David, joined in the spirit of the occasion as did the whole staff. Thank you David, and David and the whole staff for making her birthday such a fun and memorable experience!!!!! This was our second time to Secrets, the first was 6 or 7 years ago?? It still is a very beautiful resort, but little things, cracked tiles, wall gouges could use some attention. The pools are beautiful and the palapa situation has greatly improved since our first visit. Thank you for increasing the palapa space!!! We found all the staff to be friendly and accommodating. We never order room service, but the other family members did and they found it to be excellent. We had some very good dinners at The Tamarindo, The Oceana, and at the French restaurant. We had dinner at The Castaway(which last time, along with The Oceana because they’re both located outdoors we ate mostly at) which was surprisingly sub-par, but then we had a spectacular lunch there. Very much appreciated the no-reservations approach. Very much appreciated that there were no beach towel restrictions. Here is my absolute biggest complaint. The music. We had a bunch of 30 somethings and even they couldn’t stand to be on the poolside with the swim up bar. Apparently it was stuff like Justin Bieber which they found completely cringe. We all found it way too loud. Next day I got us loungers at the other pool side. Here the music was kind of chill Latin jazz mix. Fine, everyone was fine with that. At lunch that day they had a band set up between the pools. Super loud. Did they turn off the soft jazz music? No. And they still had the other pool music playing. After that we only went to the beach, where we could unfortunately still hear it but it wasn’t so loud. Except one afternoon at the beach they started blasting and I mean blasting the most awful techno music. Like we were in a club, instead of at a beautiful beach trying to enjoy the sounds of the wind and surf. Within an hour over half of the palapas had emptied. I finally went to the shack and asked them to turn it off. It felt like I was in a psychological torture cell in Guantanamo Bay. They did turn it off. I overheard a lot of people complaining about the music. This is not a party resort, it’s not for crazy uni or 20 somethings kids. Just stop thinking that loud non-stop music adds to the vacation experience. It really really doesn’t.

    Love the location

I and my Husband and the 3 other couples, we were there with, love the location, the pool area, the beach and the view. Fabulous! The hotel layout is great and there was always plenty of towels and the food for the most part was great with one exception the Japanese Restaurant...the meat in all our dishes was way over cooked. I hate to take more than I can eat at all-inclusives because I don't like to waste but in this restaurant a lot of the food went uneaten. Not one of the 8 of us wanted to do the teppanyaki experience as we remembered it from our previous visit as overcooked as well but we tried the other section of the restaurant with high hopes and we were disappointed . The staff at this Secrets are amazing, always friendly and helpful. The hotel itself could use a little TLC. I noticed an area where the walls could use some paint and the lobby could really use some very large ceilings fans to keep it cool while you sit after check out, sometimes an hour or more, before your ride to the airport arrives. The rooms are very clean but are getting close to needing some renovations, in particular our shower room floor was wood and kind of yucky. The one thing I really do not like is the bathroom layout...the little area with the toilet has glass doors and a little swish of a design to help keep it somewhat private but just not good enough. even after 40 years of marriage I like to keep my bathroom time private and all I could think is if I were going on a first trip with a new boyfriend or sharing a room with a friend how much more uncomfortable it would have been. All and all though this is a wonderful place for couples or friends. We would love to go back sometime soon.
