Preferred Club, buyer beware
This was our fourth visit to this property, so we were well aware of the layout and the terrain. Knowing this, we upgraded to the Preferred Club, assuming we would be assigned a room near the main area. Nope. Our room was probably as far from the main area as possible, and still be on the property. In addition, there was also the forty step climb to our room, keeping in mind that we are seniors. When we pointed this out to the Preferred Club staff checking us in, she just shrugged and said there were no rooms left. There was definitely a lack of concern on her part. So keep in mind, if you are paying extra for the Preferred Club, you could be far away from the main buildings, activities, restaurants, Preferred Club lounge, etc. Yeilin (concierge), thank you for listening. Staff of note were Harold and Ditzi at the Aqua restaurant, and Merari and Dalay from the activities team. (Apologies for the mangled spelling)

Lots of hills but manageable
Good resort. Food was great and very accommodating to my vegetarian and dairy allergy diet. It’s a lot of hills. Despite what a lot of people are saying, it is not un walkable. Yes some of the hills are steep, but everything is pretty close together in the most walk-in maybe 10 or 15 minutes. I have knee issues and we were up the tallest and steepest hill and I was able to walk up it. Slow and steady. Ocean isn’t good. But it has a high tide. Because of this, there are No chairs or umbrellas on the beach. You have to drag one down if want one. There is lots of shade tho. Lots of crabs on the beach to watch. Pool areas are nice. We stayed mostly at the quiet pool. However it gets very hot so you need sandals to walk on the deck. The coffee shop has ice cream and specialty coffees. However the quit pool bar makes the best ice coffees as he shakes them up like martinis We met “John Wayne on the main pool beach and did the jet ski tour. He gives you a receipt for the deposit and sends you all the pics from your 2 hour excursion for free. Definitely a must do tour. Went snorkeling, saw monkeys, fed monkeys, jet ski’s across the bay.

Beautiful country, not so great resort.
My husband upgraded to the plunge pool room and it was fabulous. The view was great! But the pool is not heated, so we did not use it at night. We saw monkeys and pizotes! It was incredible. If you are expecting fantastic food, you are going to be disappointed. The food was not great. The best food was room service. Angus burger, tres leches, beef fajitas, and the Costa Rican breakfast were fantastic. The service at the bars and pool were also not great and my husband and I are big tippers. They will only come around if you tip them first. We prefer service before giving tips, but then we would have to go to the bar and order our own drinks. And those bar tenders did not seem very excited about making our drinks I did not even get a hello from one of the bartenders next to Aqua Cafe-he just looked at me. We did finally get two good servers at the Main pool, Randy and Edgar. I will say that the resort has fantastic van drivers. They will remember you and are awesome. Eli and Alonzo were the best! If you have trouble walking or getting around, this resort is not for you. This resort is on a hilly terrain and requires going up and down hill or using the van drivers. Otherwise, you might be stuck to your room. We did do a special dinner. The ambiance was great, we saw a show, and had live music from where we were and Wilson, our server, was fantastic. BUT, the main course and dessert was nothing to write home about. However, the three courses before the main course....phenomenal. The tropical ceviche, the tropical salad, and the pumpkin creme soup was amazing. I wished the main course and dessert was as amazing.

Tired old hotel. Food so so. Portofino wine cellar dinner with chewy steak and mushy lobster not worth $99/per person with no wine included.
