Wow, this gets better on each visit!
As a return guest to this hotel, it is easy to see why so many do the same and also why people don’t want to promote too much and increase the share capacity lol! An amazing location with amazing staff for an amazing holiday! I can’t praise it enough. The staff are polite and helpful keen to make your stay a great memory. From those who work on the reception team to those who support on the cleaning areas to those who work on the beaches and the restaurants, they work together as a little family to ensure everyone has a good holiday. I can totally recommend UMI restaurant meals and whilst breakfast and evening meals were great in Reef, lunch was lovely in Colin’s and right next to the beach. The bar staff serving drinks on the beach and the water sports guys putting umbrellas up for everyone in very hot conditions all are so friendly and can not do enough. If you want to get spoilt and relax this is the place to go. We had a deluxe one bed ocean suite and it had an amazing view. (Room 323) Far enough away from the evening entertainment which finished by 2200 anyway and close enough to sit on balcony in the evening watching the beach and night sky. The manager has done and continues to lead a fantastic mix of staff who clearly put the visitor at the front of all they do. I totally recommend if you have an opportunity to stay at this location and want a quiet relaxing time, do it! You won’t be disappointed! I’ve stayed at a number of hotels and this one is the best by far!

An very pleasant escape to Winter sun from the UK
Stayed at Sugar Bay Hotel, Barbados November into December 2024. This was an anniversary holiday. The resort was only 30 minutes by taxi from the airport. The hotel was clean and the staff were very friendly. We were all inclusive. The food choice was a bit limited in comparison to some other places we have stayed at although we always found something we liked. There are two restaurants on site which have to be booked. You can only visit each one once per week unless you want to pay extra. One was Sizzlers (steak place) and the other was an Asian fusion place called Umi. We would recommend Umi, as Sizzlers was very hot with little airflow which made our visit quite uncomfortable. The beach and the pool are quite pleasant although you have to book your lounger with a towel early. We suggest doing that on the way to breakfast (7 a.m.) Drinks quoted as premium were not quite. There was a limited selection of standard spirits, but the cocktails were plentiful. We tipped although many didn't. We would suggest USD for tipping. One USD was equivalent to two Barbados dollars. The checkout is very good as they let you use all facilities until your taxi run to the airport. Our flight was late afternoon, so this was ideal. During our stay the staff made special efforts to mark our anniversary with cake on a plate with a message written in chocolate sauce left in our room on the morning of our anniversary and a similar offering on the evening in the Umi restaurant with a bottle of red wine to take away. We would like to thank all staff for their very generous and touching efforts. We would recommend the Reef Bar to watch the sunsets (17:30 when we were there). Temperatures ranged from 26 in the evening to 31 mid afternoon. Overall a very enjoyable winter break for us UK residents.

A Polite Constructive Review...
If I may, I would like to give a constructive review. Sugar Bay itself is in a lovely part of Barbados. If you are after sun, cocktails and a more relaxed approach to a holiday then this is the spot for you. I think one of the more important aspects of a holiday that most people genuinely seem to forget are the beds themselves and most importantly having a decent nights sleep. The beds are very comfortable. The sheets are adequate and the pillows were comfy, although I think the cushions on the bed probably just get in the way and are unused. My only slight dismay was that the pillow cases could really do with being replaced - orange make-up stains should not be acceptable for a luxury holiday and staff should really be inspecting them and binning them if such stains should exist after cleaning. Sleeping at Sugar Bay itself isnt exactly easy if you are a light sleeper. The whistling frogs will keep you up at night and continually disturb your sleep if you have trouble. I think this may exist across the enterity of Barbados. Earplugs are advised, otherwise you may regret it if you suffer from noise. I did ask at reception if they provided any sleeping foam earplugs or even sold them in their little shop, but they weren't available, so this could be something they could consider. Our room was on the ground floor fairly close to a coffee lounge outdoor area. The room itself was clean (apart from one note, which I will mention later) and the cleaners do a great job. However, there were very few clothes hangers in our particular room and most of our clothes remained in the suitcase. It didn't particularly bother me and throughout my stay I was told by other families that they had sufficient hangers. So maybe its different from room to room? In that case, why? Finally, my only dismay with the room was with the lampshades, which were all mouldy and could have done with being replaced. Perhaps they should be inspected? Regarding the coffee lounge area (Driftwood). The facilities were always being maintained and I heard no complaints about the hot drinks. The coffee machine did not provide hot chocolate, although I remember on the final day I was able to obtain one via the main bar for breakfast when I asked for it. My only note to Sugar Bay would be that they may want to check the spelling of the Driftwood sign as its not correct and doesn't look professional. One of main positives you may see on other reviews will be about the cocktails. I tend not to drink, but I did sample a few and would say if you like strong cocktails then this is the place for you. With it being more of a family resort, I didn't see any vulgar behaviour or drunkenness. Improvements should be made to the cocktail and mocktail menus. They need updating as well as being better displayed and available for guests. It is not clear what is available in any bar if I'm honest. I was told by a member of staff that the menus were outdated and that they didn't even provide some of the things written there. Continuing with the theme of soft drinks, milkshakes and fruit slushies were also available and were quite a nice change, although no mention of them were on any - maybe the soft drink options could be added to the mocktails menu? I personally think more attention should be given to mocktails since I was turned away from the pool area by a young female bar staff member who simply said they didn't do mocktails (although she had made me one an hour before...) and on 3 seperate occasions I was mistakenly given alcoholic drinks instead of mocktails. I will add that staff were more than happy to replace them and I wasn't upset by this, but I suppose it could slightly grate on someone whose religion forbids alcohol. Finally, could Sugar Bay also perhaps change the mocktail name "Kids Sugar" to something else? Its a bit embrassing for an adult to ask for that. Joan made a fantastic one with whipped cream and some sort of fruity sauce on too. Absolutely delicious! There is actually a pub that lies on the resort and stays open after midnight, but you wouldn't know it is even there! It is shockingly underused. The poor guy serving in there is usually completely alone singing to himself. I think Sugar Bay needs to acknowledge and promote it. I would recommend a "pub activities board" in the reception area next to the excursions board and have pub activities such as karaoke, bingo and pub quizzes happening there. The pub needs additional incentives for people to go and stay there. Perhaps future pub activities could happen after the music and evening performances stop? Announcements could be made by the performers as they finish their acts and encourage people to go if they are fancying staying up later in the evening. Otherwise what's the point in keeping it? On the resort, there is also an arcades room, which we spent a small amount of time in. I liked the retro carpets and there is a suitable pool table and I remember the Pacman arcade machine being worthwhile. But again, its another area of the resort that could do with a bit of TLC. The Star Wars pinball machine could do with fixing, along with the tired old air hockey machine that doesnt blow enough air to be played properly. It could also do with wall speakers playing low volume music. Maybe add another arcade machine or two? I can't remember if darts were available. The buffet food had some great options and good flavours. There seemed to a different themed night across the week. I loved the seafood station and could pile up on as many king prawns as I wanted. There's also an egg station in the morning that can provide the perfect eggs for you. Waiters can sometimes provide you with different drinks from the bar too if asked politely. The rice and chicken at the buffet could probably do with being hotter in those warming stations since they are often opened (and left open by visitors!) frequently. We often found rice and chicken lukewarm, which probably shouldn't be in that dangerzone temperature for long periods of time. The steakhouse desperately needs air con installed. Its far too hot in there (and the waiting/pick up area could probably do with fans installed too). I enjoyed the mac n' lobster and the ribs, though the menus I found from previous years were better. The staff sure can sing though! I give them five stars for their brilliant singing! I thought the Asian restaurant Umi was superb. You had a good view of the bar performances when eating. Although desserts and service were a little slow towards the end for some reason, all the food was excellent and exclusive for that restaurant. For lunch we went to Colin's most days. They sometimes have slightly different options from the buffet and are all cooked hot and fresh. There is always a blackboard displayed near the bar with all the options available. You can change your beach towels at a hut (when available) near Colin's and the great staff there provide umbrellas for the beach sun loungers as well as providing equipment like canoes, snorkels, bodyboards and beach games like bowles. You are better swimming in the sea as the main pool area has different floor levels and the other is far too shallow and small. The pool floor surfaces themselves are a little rough on your feet. Overall, the sunsets are amazing. The staff on the whole were very friendly and I would urge Sugar Bay to read some of the recent reviews and put forward a plan to improve their facilities as they truly have a great resort on their hands. It was a great experience.

Excellent staff make this hotel a delight
I traveled with my husband who is disabled and could not climb the stairs to our room (booked by an independent agent) The bellboy Dylan couldn’t not do enough for us . He sorted a room change to ground floor and searched the hotel to find us, then carried two heavy bags down two flights of stairs and settled us in. This hotel is made by the excellent staff from the singing cook at breakfast to the lovely restaurant staff and front of house … we only stayed two nights pre cruise … but we’ll be back

AMAZING!!!
I can only use one word to describe this hotel AMAZING!! Location - Amazing Accommodation-Amazing Staff-Amazing Food-Amazing We visited Sugar Bay with Family & friends (7 of us in total) to celebrate my 60th Birthday and this place did not disappoint. The rooms are spacious and well appointed with very comfortable beds. The rooms were serviced daily and were always done to a very high standard. The different restaurants offer a wide variety of food and the main buffet style restaurant offer a wide range of high quality foods every day (compliments to the Head Chef and staff) The Sizzle Steak House was my personal favourite and we dined here for my actual birthday. I can honestly say that the Fillet Steak ordered was one of the best I have ever had. The staff are so friendly and helpful throughout the whole hotel and the bar staff know how to make the best cocktails. This was one of the best holidays I have had in a long time and we will definitely return as soon as possible it is that good. As I have already said this place is Amazing!!!!
