  A beautiful hotel, but not quite a five-star experience

  The hotel itself is very impressive from an architectural point of view. The lobby is genuinely beautiful, spacious and pleasant to spend time in, and it immediately gives a strong first impression. I stayed in a standard room rather than at Red Level, and overall the room was absolutely adequate for a five-star business hotel. The size was good, the desk and working area were very practical, there were plenty of sockets, and in general it was easy to work comfortably from the room. The bed was perhaps a little too soft for my personal taste, but certainly large and comfortable. Where the room fell slightly short of five-star standards was in some of the details. The quality of the bathrobes and towels was not particularly impressive and felt rather worn for a hotel of this category. The main weakness, however, was the service. On several occasions I had to call more than once for housekeeping. I also requested that the room be cleaned during a specific period when I was out, but when I returned it had still not been done. Used bottles, trays and plates were sometimes left outside rooms in the corridor for too long, which is not a particularly pleasant sight in a five-star hotel. Tea and coffee supplies were also not always replenished consistently. None of these issues was dramatic in itself, but taken together they gave a certain impression of lack of attention to detail. There was also no automatic turndown service, which I find rather unusual at this level. It may perhaps be available on request, but it was certainly not offered as a standard service. The hotel facilities are very good. The gym is large and very well equipped, and the swimming pool is also excellent. What I found difficult to understand, however, was the fact that access to the spa is subject to an additional charge. I fully understand paying extra for massages or specific treatments, but in a five-star hotel with such a large fitness area I would normally expect access to a sauna or steam room to be included. It is not really the amount of the fee that is the issue, but rather the principle and the overall guest experience. Breakfast was good and offered a wide buffet selection. For a very good four-star or four-star-plus hotel, I would probably consider it perfectly adequate. For a five-star property, however, I expected something more. The hot food selection was fairly conventional, with the usual eggs, bacon, sausages and beans, but there was no proper à la carte menu with more refined freshly prepared dishes. The same applies to the juices: the orange juice was acceptable and of decent quality, but did not really taste like freshly squeezed orange juice. Overall, this is a very attractive hotel and certainly a comfortable place to stay. The building, lobby, rooms and facilities are all very good. My three-star rating is not because there was anything seriously wrong, but because I am judging it according to the standards expected from a five-star hotel. With more consistent service, greater attention to detail and a few improvements to breakfast and spa access, it could easily deliver a much more convincing five-star experience.

  Great stay in Barcelona

  Although not close to main attractions, this was a great hotel! Staff were extremely courteous & helpful. Great restaurant & they have a beautiful walking trail nearby. Highly recommend

  Fabulous family stay

  My husband, 9 year old son and I stayed here for 4 nights before getting a cruise from Barcelona and we picked this hotel so that it was a little more resorty and slighly out of the city hustle and bustle. The hotel offers a shuttle bus service that you can book to go into the City however we just took a short walk to the metro which was very easy and convienient. First impressions of the open lounge/reception area were fantastic. Check In was very smooth and quick. We were provided quite a lot of information regarding where things were and opening times of restaurants (we had Breakfast included) etc. Our room had two double beds and was a decet size, we certanly didnt feel too cramped. There was plenty of storage space to put all our belongings and also hide our suitcases. The beds were amazing and possibly the comfiest we've ever experienced in a hotel, we loved the bed linen too, very good quality and so soft. We all slept really well. While the bathroom itself was quite spacious with a decent walk in shower the separate toilet was a little cosy once the door was closed. Nice toiletries provided and extra large thick fluffy bath towels were a great bonus. No complaints on the cleanliness and room was made up each day with certain items replenished. During our stay we visted the pool twice, on neither occasions did we have an issue with getting loungers but it was busy and people that arrived after us couldn't get directly out by the pool and went up on the grass area which is fine unless you have younger children you want to watch closely. This year they introuduced new rules for the pool and no toys or floats were allowed which i do understand given the size and how busy it got but also took some of the fun away for the children and my son likes to have his sinkies and dive for them. Also at the time of booking it wasn't clear that the other outdoor pool was adult only and the indoor was a chargable item (since returning we've noticed the website does make that very clear now) so we were expecting to have a few options. As we were only there a couple of days it didnt really affect us and wouldnt stop us booking to stay again either. We did have breakfast and it was always well stocked, the fresh orange juice was lovely. I'm never a breakfast fan but there was something for everyone, plenty of pastries, fresh meat/cheese and cooked options. We didnt have dinner at any of the restaurants but did have a lovely pizza lunch from the onsite restaurant next to the pool which was very tasty and they delivered to our daybed by the pool which was great. All the staff were really friendy, polite and professional and we didnt have any issues during our stay. Yes there were a couple of very small niggles but would we stay here again - absolutely!! We really did have a fantastic stay, would highly recoomend to others and will stay again when cruising from Barcelona.

  Wonderful experience for stay in Gran Meliá Hotel

  We stayed at Torre Melina Gran Meliá in Barcelona from 17 to 18 September, combining a business trip with a short stay with my wife, and we had a truly excellent experience. Location & RedLevel Experience We stayed in the RedLevel on the 9th floor and were very pleased with the overall experience. Having access to the RedLevel Lounge added a special touch to our stay and made everything feel more comfortable and exclusive. Room & Cleanliness Our room was spacious, beautifully maintained and exceptionally clean. The size of the room, the comfort and the overall quality were exactly what we expected from a hotel of this level. Breakfast & Restaurants Breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay. The quality and variety were excellent, particularly the additional selections available through the VIP/RedLevel menu. The hotel restaurants were also very good, with excellent food and service. Pool & Spa The outdoor swimming pool and spa facilities were excellent. Both areas were beautifully maintained and provided a relaxing atmosphere, which was particularly appreciated after a busy working day. Service & Hospitality What impressed us most was the hospitality of the staff. Everyone we interacted with was professional, welcoming and attentive, making us feel genuinely well looked after throughout our stay. Special Thanks to Cristina & Irene I would especially like to thank Cristina and Irene from the Reservations team. Both were exceptionally kind, respectful and helpful. Their willingness to assist guests and their warm, professional attitude deserve special recognition. People like Cristina and Irene make a real difference to the overall hotel experience. Overall Experience Torre Melina Gran Meliá provided an excellent combination of comfort, quality facilities, great food and outstanding hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the RedLevel experience, and we would be very happy to return on our next visit to Barcelona.   Look out for your security deposit!

  Hotel review I’m writing this on behalf of my daughter, who recently stayed at the hotel for three nights. She’ll probably never get around to posting her experience herself, so I’ve stepped in. I actually felt a bit guilty about doing so because she called me from the hotel while she was there asking about the €600 security deposit. I told her that this is fairly normal in hotels and that there was nothing to worry about. When she came home, she still hadn’t received it, so I reassured her again and said that in my experience these deposits are normally returned within 3 to 5 days at most. Unfortunately, nearly three weeks later, she was still waiting. In the end, it took two emails and a phone call before the €600 they confirmed via email they are arranging the refund. To be fair, she thought the hotel rooms and facilities were fantastic and had very little negative to say about the actual stay. That’s why it seems such a shame that something as simple as returning a security deposit has left such a bad impression. The €600 being held for nearly three weeks also genuinely affected her. It left her with very little money available during August and restricted what she was able to do. You would expect a hotel charging the rates it does and presenting itself as such a high star property to have a fairly slick process for something like this. Once the room has been checked and there’s no issue, surely the deposit should be returned promptly. I’m not suggesting for one minute that the hotel does this deliberately or that it’s a regular practice. But when you have to send two emails and make a phone call to get your own €600 back, it does make you wonder. It’s a shame because the hotel itself was excellent. Unfortunately, the €600 deposit took nearly three weeks to find its way home. I suppose it had decided to extend its holiday!
