Villa del Palmar Cancun Resort Review: Great Experience, But Needs Transparency

**Villa del Palmar Cancun Resort: Great Resort, but Major Tipping Confusion Dampened Our Experience** My family and I just returned from a week-long stay at Villa del Palmar Cancun, and unfortunately, while we enjoyed the resort itself, our experience was marred by major confusion around tipping practices. This was our second time at the resort, and we came back with 14 family members and friends, excited to share the experience with loved ones. However, what should have been a relaxing vacation turned into a frustrating ordeal regarding gratuities, and it has left us questioning whether we’ll return in the future. We initially booked our accommodations with the help of a concierge through Taffer Resorts, and communication was smooth up until just days before our trip. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the resort, the personal concierge we worked with was completely unreachable. The communication breakdown was frustrating, but the tipping confusion was the real issue that left a bad taste in our mouths. From the moment we arrived, we were tipping generously, as we always do when we receive great service. However, after a few days, one of our family members pointed out that we were likely over-tipping, given that the resort's website stated that gratuities were included. This was news to us, so we did some investigating and found out that an 18% service charge had already been applied to our bills and inclusive in the price. When we spoke with the front desk and asked about how the gratuity was being distributed, we were told that the 18% charge was split among all staff, except for the waiters and bartenders, who relied on the “extra gratuity” tips from guests. This seemed odd to us, but we continued to tip on that line, believing it would go directly to the waiters & bartenders. Later, we asked a waiter point-blank if the “extra gratuity” tip we were leaving went directly to them, and he revealed that it actually went into a shared pool, distributed among all the staff (landscapers, housekeeping, etc). This was very different from what we had been told, and it left us feeling misled. After several back-and-forth conversations with both front desk staff, managers and supervisors, it became clear that there was a lack of consistency in the communication about tipping. One manager told us that the "extra gratuity" tips we had been leaving were supposed to be given directly to the waitstaff and bartenders, but that wasn’t reflected in the information we were receiving. Another front desk employee confirmed that, essentially, we had been over-tipping, as the gratuities included in our bill were more than enough for everyone. We even requested that all the extra tips be removed from our bill, which created more confusion and frustration as the manager and supervisors made us feel guilty like we were doing something wrong when what we were doing wasn't even going to the person/people we wanted it to go to. This entire tipping situation left us feeling completely duped. We came to the resort expecting a relaxing, hassle-free experience, but instead, we spent a large part of our stay questioning how gratuities were handled, what we were actually paying for, and whether the staff was being properly compensated. The lack of transparency around tipping was not only confusing but also frustrating, especially when the staff was clearly working hard to make our stay enjoyable. We love the resort itself, and the staff was generally great, but this confusion is something we can’t overlook. The tipping issue has unfortunately overshadowed the rest of our experience, and it’s something that has us seriously questioning whether we will return to Villa del Palmar in the future. If we do, we’ll be a lot more cautious about how we tip, but the lack of clarity and mixed messages from management have definitely left a bad impression. To anyone planning to visit Villa del Palmar Cancun or other Taffer properties, I strongly recommend you clarify the tipping policy up front. While the resort and staff are wonderful, the lack of transparency regarding gratuities can really impact your experience. It's something I never expected to be an issue, but after this visit, it will be hard to forget. Another suggestion for management: please reconsider the scheduling of timeshare/ Residency ownership presentations. My family member arrived at the resort at 5 PM, only to have a meeting scheduled for 7:45 AM the next day to discuss potential ownership. It made no sense to have such a meeting so soon after arrival, especially when they hadn't had a chance to enjoy the resort yet. I would recommend scheduling these presentations halfway through the stay or towards the end when guests have had time to experience the property and its amenities.

Great resort but worst front desk staff !!

I stayed in this resort last month for 6 nights with friends and families. Everything was nice till the last day of checkout when the front desk person on night duty charged me absurd money of US $2939.72 for the hotel dues saying that he had no choice but to charge this amount as his system was showing that amount. Even though I was showing him reservation email of initial deposit of US $1625 before arriving at hotel and then dues of US $519 to be charged on last day of check out. He didn't listen to me and didn't hand out check-out card for airport taxi till he charged that amount. Total amount supposed to be charged - US $1635 + 519 = US $2154 but they charged me bizarre amount of US $1635 + 2939.72 = US $4574.72 Overall, they charged me US $4574.72 - US $2154 = US $2420.72 MORE !! Total total FRAUD !! I have been calling and emailing their reception department ( suprecepcion@villagroupcancun.com ) from last 2 weeks but they kept on transferring those calls and act like they don't understand English or not sure if their IQ is too low. No response from their side either in email or calls. What a SHODDY customer service by such a nice resort !! These people are trying their best to defame this resort !! I wish they would have hired better front desk staff specially on night duty ones !! I really hope that nobody had to go through such a traumatic experience !! I would suggest to BOYCOTT this resort completely or leave your wallet home if you are heading towards this resort !!!

Wonderful family trip to ring in NY2025

We just returned from new years week 2025 at Villa Palmer! It was possibly our best family beach vacation in all our parenting years! Our ocean suite was so accommodating to our family of 5! The linens and towels, beds and pillows great! Cleaning and other services were all amazing! The food and restaurants were so delicious. The poolside food was the only mediocre food…but they did have a great tuna that was my daily lunch! The bars and bartenders were friendly and kind! And our energetic boys loved the activities directors and their planned, daily activities. The weather affected the ocean water park at the end of the week but it is no one’s control…when they could play on it, our kids loved it. Great place….it isn’t overwhelming big but big enough that my kids felt independent. We will return!
