HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL!!
Fantastic stay. Customer service was excellent. Staff were lovely in every respect, particularly George, the doorman. Free upgrade to our room to celebrate our daughter's birthday leaving chocolates and birthday wishes. A brilliant personal touch. Breakfast was amazing!

Must Stay and Dine at The Court (ask for Emily or Michael)
From the second we were dropped off, the experience was amazing the entire time. I must say, the people of Edinburgh are so nice and helpful. The entire hotel staff was excellent and so helpful. The room is large and the bed is super comfortable. I had a view of The Edinburgh Castle so it made my stay even nicer. Located in the perfect location between Old and New Town, I look forward to staying here again. The restaurant in the hotel was beautiful and had an amazing menu. We stopped in for afternoon tea and a snack and had the nicest server, Emily. So helpful, informative and, just a nice girl. She was so excellent we made dinner reservations and then for dinner we had the pleasure of getting served by Michael. This young man went above and beyond. He was so knowledgeable about whiskey and even brought me a wee pour for me to taste. Both Emily and Michael checked on us regularly and made our lunch and dinner experience very pleasant. Truly loved our stay and our experience at the Caldedonian and The Court!

Unfortunately not a 5 star hotel
The only 5 star aspect of this hotel is the great location with a view of the castle. The hotel is under renovation, so our expectations were not as high for this former Waldorf Astoria. The heating doesn’t work in some rooms, including ours. When we checked in, we noticed several space heaters behind the reception desk and realized why after we arrived to our room, which was freezing. We were brought one of these portable heaters, but the room was too large for it to have any effect. In addition, the bathroom had peeling paint and cracked tile. I will give compliments to the concierge staff who provided fantastic recommendations for dinner and whiskey bars. Unfortunately, overall we wouldn’t recommend this hotel.

Disastrous experience
This isn’t a luxury hotel. Our room was unacceptable and we ended up changing hotels in the middle of the night. The heating did not work and the room was 12 degrees Celsius (on a freezing February day). The reception staff was unprofessional in handling the situation. They said because it’s an old hotel, the heating doesn’t work well. When we requested to change rooms, they lied telling us they were fully booked. As we were checking out, at 1am, the night manager, miraculously offered another room. As a longtime Hilton Honors member, I can say that I’ve never encountered such a disastrous and disappointing hotel experience.

Disappointing restrictive breakfast and beware of being over-charged
We have stayed at this hotel a few times in the past when it was a Waldorf Astoria brand and it used to be amazing but this time we were really disappointed with our stay. Our main reason to visit Edinburgh was to enjoy festivities - the Christmas market was still open and shops and other hotels were still beautifully decorated with all that sparkles and shines at this time of year. However when we stepped into the Caledonian Hotel we were disappointed as it looking so bare - not one bauble was on display, in fact there was no hint at all of the festive period. We've always visited Edinburgh at this time of year and have always been wowed by the decorations displayed in the previously named Waldorf Astoria. This time we were reluctant to spend much time in the Caledonian because of the lack of festive atmosphere and so chose to go several times to the Grand Cafe at the Scotsman Hotel and also to the Dome to appreciate their wonderful festive atmosphere and decorations. One of our favourite features of this hotel used to be 'Peacock Alley' with its relaxed spacious atmosphere but we were disappointed to see that this has all changed and has been renamed 'The Court' and restyled with rows of unappealing tables and seats placed in such a manner that it is difficult to see the pianist when she takes to the ivories to play beautiful music. Breakfast was very disappointing and restrictive whereas previously it had been amazing and one of the best ever. Even though some of the food items are available buffet style, choices are limited in that if you wish to have any cheese or cold meat or granola or fresh fruit or smoked salmon you can only choose one of these options (see photo of menu) which have to be ordered and brought to you platter-style even if they contain items you don't wish to eat. This makes it impossible for example to choose to have one slice of cheese and/or one slice of ham with your croissant - too restrictive! The black pudding and haggis here used to be such high quality - the best I'd ever tasted - but now that's not so and also there's no Lorne sausage available whereas there used to be. To add to the disappointment we got a complete shock when we checked out to see that we were being overcharged by over £1000 for their upmarket restaurant that we've never ever set foot in! Mistakes like this should not happen - it causes unnecessary stress. This experience has made me doubt whether I'd stay here again which is a shame because it's a beautiful building and in a good location.
